Book The Religious Cultures of Dutch Jewry

Download or read book The Religious Cultures of Dutch Jewry written by Yosef Kaplan and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-05-08 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Religious Cultures of Dutch Jewry an international group of scholars examines aspects of religious belief and practice of pre-emancipation Sephardim and Ashkenazim in Amsterdam, Curaçao and Surinam, ceremonial dimensions, artistic representations of religious life, and religious life after the Shoa. The origins of Dutch Jewry trace back to diverse locations and ancestries: Marranos from Spain and Portugal and Ashkenazi refugees from Germany, Poland and Lithuania. In the new setting and with the passing of time and developments in Dutch society at large, the religious life of Dutch Jews took on new forms. Dutch Jewish society was thus a microcosm of essential changes in Jewish history.

Book Gedenkboek Inlichtings en Actie Agenten

Download or read book Gedenkboek Inlichtings en Actie Agenten written by Roger Baron Coekelbergs and published by Maklu. This book was released on 2015-10-14 with total page 864 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Numerous Belgian citizens, men and women from all ages and social classes, were indignant by the occupation of their native country during World War II. As a result, they felt the need ‘to do something about it’ and would evolve to a special form of the Resistance. No less than 18.716 Intelligence and Action Agents (IAA) in 129 Intelligence and Action Services (IAS) operated in occupied Belgium. In cooperation with the British services MI.6, MI.9 and SOE, they were directed by the State Security in exile in London. Their fields of operation were: political, economic and military espionage; sabotage; psychological warfare; propaganda; escape lines; meteorological intelli-gence; support to people who refused the Compulsory Work Service; … At least 4.000 Intelligence and Action Agents were arrested and 1.815 were killed. They were shot to death, decapitated or killed in concentration camps). This book highlights their story and it names each of these unknown heroes, 70 years after the events.

Book The Anglo Boer War 1899 1902 963 Days

Download or read book The Anglo Boer War 1899 1902 963 Days written by Pieter G Cloete and published by African Sun Media. This book was released on 2021-12-01 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the start of the Anglo-Boer War today 120 years ago thousands of publications, written or typed reports and other creations have been produced to narrate the war events, express opinions on its origins, causes, course, results and legacy and on participants in the struggle. This process is ongoing, since the debate amongst both professional historians and interested amateurs on exactly what happened and why is still raging and new information on the war still crops up. The history of the Anglo-Boer War is truly a neverending discourse. As the author of a number of books on the war, I have consulted hundreds of both published and unpublished sources. Some were of limited value, but a small percentage of the published books were of such high value that they formed part of a small stack of books that found a permanent home on my desktop while I was in the writing process. Pieter Cloete’s The Anglo-Boer War – A Chronology, both the original English version and the enlarged Afrikaans version published in 2010, was always part of that stack. It is to me a privilege to write a foreword for the user-friendly and meticulously researched book. It not only contains a wealth of information but a detailed source list and an extensive index. There are few, if any, more helpful reference books on the war and thus represents an essential resource to anyone with a more than superficial interest in the Anglo-Boer War. Book The 1899 Hague Peace Conference

    Book Details:
  • Author : Arthur Eyffinger
  • Publisher : Martinus Nijhoff Publishers
  • Release : 1999-05-05
  • ISBN : 9041111921
  • Pages : 538 pages

Download or read book The 1899 Hague Peace Conference written by Arthur Eyffinger and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 1999-05-05 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The Dawn of a New Era', as some rejoiced, 'a printer's error in the history of mankind', as others loathed. From the day Czar Nicholas' Peace Rescript surprised a divided world, the First Hague Peace Conference has evoked irreconcilable responses. A predictable failure in the disarmament debate, a distinct leap ahead in curbing the Moloch of War, its lasting repute is linked to its brainchild, the Permanent Court of Arbitration, the cradle of The Hague's present claim as self-imposed Juridical Capital of the World. By all accounts, this 'First Parliament of Man' opened the door to the International Era & man's ultimate dream, 'The Federation of the World'. The 1899 Hague Peace Conference pays tribute to this historical assembly. It deals comprehensively with the genesis, proceedings, & outcome of this first diplomatic encounter of its kind, in the political heart & royal residence of a small, yet ambitious nation. It details the substance matter of the Conference, to put a check on the armaments spiral, to restrain the evils & control the customs of war, & to provide for the peaceful settlement of disputes. Enlarging on the intense debate in committees large & small, the publication likewise echoes the splendour of the ceremonial sittings of the Plenary, that 'New Areopagus' gathered in the House in the Wood, itself the glorification of the Peace of Westphalia, its exotic drawing rooms & celebrated canvasses the pinnacle of arts & crafts of the Dutch Golden Age. On top of this, the work colourfully portrays to a man the full hundred delegates, politicians, diplomats, jurists, & military men, luminaries of the day most of them, & highlights some of their astounding addresses. It introduces the world of pacifists, led by Bloch, Stead, & Von Suttner, who gravitated in great numbers to the hotels of repute at the luxury seashore resort. In a wealth of anecdotes distilled from diaries, memoirs & magazines, this jubilee book pictures in gorgeous detail the splendid social entourage of royal receptions, public dinners & cultural excursions. Lavishly illustrated with scores of ravishing pictures it sketches The Hague of the Belle Epoque, the world of Mesdag & Couperus. Based on primary sources & in-depth research, this commemorative publication is an essentially multi-disciplined approach to a pivotal diplomatic venue, a sweeping legal debate, & a breath-taking social event. Arthur Eyffinger's book on the 1899 Hague Peace Conference was awarded the Certificate of Merit for High Technical Craftsmanship. The Committee stated: "The book was painstakingly researched & richly descriptive, reflecting archival research at its best. Eyffinger recreates the Hague Peace Conference for a contemporary audience, incorporating historical & political context & art, as well as the text of a wealth of original documents. Readers are genuinely transported back to another world, in a way that helps them better appreciate this one."

Book The Working Papers of Hugo Grotius

Download or read book The Working Papers of Hugo Grotius written by Martine Julia van Ittersum and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2024-05-02 with total page 753 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Working Papers of Hugo Grotius is the first full-length study of the handwritten documents initially used by the author of Mare Liberum (1609) and De Jure Belli ac Pacis (1625) in his day-to-day activities as a scholar, lawyer, and politician, but subsequently incorporated into his own or other archives. Martine van Ittersum reconstructs a process of transmission, dispersal, and loss that started during Grotius’ lifetime and ended with the papers’ auction in 1864. This is also a study of archival afterlives. Our understanding of Grotius’ life and work is shaped by the conscious decisions of previous generations to retain or discard documents, frequently for the sake of individual lives and careers, family honour and/or larger political and religious ends.

Book The Hague Conferences and International Politics 1898 1915

Download or read book The Hague Conferences and International Politics 1898 1915 written by Maartje Abbenhuis and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-10-18 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning with the extraordinary rescript by Tsar Nicholas II in August 1898 calling the world's governments to a disarmament conference, this book charts the history of the two Hague peace conferences of 1899 and 1907 – and the third conference of 1915 that was never held – using diplomatic correspondence, newspaper reports, contemporary publications and the papers of internationalist organizations and peace activists. Focusing on the international media frenzy that developed around them, Maartje Abbenhuis provides a new angle on the conferences. Highlighting the conventions that they brought about, she demonstrates how The Hague set the tone for international politics in the years leading up to the First World War, permeating media reports and shaping the views and activities of key organizations such as the inter-parliamentary union, the international council of women and the Institut de droit international (Institute of International Law). Based on extensive archival research in the Netherlands, Great Britain, Switzerland and the United States alongside contemporary publications in a range of languages, this book considers the history of the Hague conferences in a new way, and presents a powerful case for the importance of The Hague conferences in shaping twentieth century international politics.

Book At Home on the World Markets

Download or read book At Home on the World Markets written by Joost Jonker and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2001-03-01 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dutch economy has relied on trade for centuries. During the seventeenth century the Netherlands experienced a Golden Age built largely on commercial enterprise, and trade continues to be the golden link in the supply chain from producers to consumers. Yet we know very little about the business of trade and the people involved in it. What was the nature of their work, and how did it evolve through the ages? In the lavishly illustrated At Home on the World Markets Joost Jonker and Keetie Sluyterman look at mercantile dynasties - such as the Trips and the Van Eeghens - and companies - such as the famous Dutch East Indian Company VOC and the modern trading company Hagemeyer - that have been largely unstudied. They describe the evolution of a unique economic sector that occupies a key position in the supply chain from producers to consumers.
