Since then, dreary winter days have fallen upon us, and a great shadow, that will never pass away from your Grandfather's house. Book excerpt: Excerpt from At the Gate Beautiful: The Story of a Day The miracle was notable because of the two wizards who had performed it, namely: Peter and John, a Man of Rock and a Son of Thun der. They were the original Pope and Car dinal; but tell it not in the Vatican! For this Pope wore no tiara and this Cardinal no scarlet robe. No acolytes went before them swinging censers or ringing bells, and no lackeys followed to carry their trains. They were plain men in homespun, once partners in the fishing trade, but now serving Christ without pomp or circum stance. They were destined to be heard from in the coming ages; for they were the vanguard of the militant church advancing, two and two, in the name of Christ to the conquest of the world. Many of these more than a third, perhaps have been written since the complete (household) edition of her poems was published, about ten years ago, and are not included in that edition. Others are now for the first time in print. In selecting from her more recent verses, as well as from those which have become somewhat familiar, choice has been made chiefly of such as may be called hymns, being at once lyrical and devotional; and also of such as have borne the test of a somewhat wide approval. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gate Beautiful: Principles and Methods in Vital-Art and Education Art-for-art's-sake may be very fine, but art-for-progress is finer still. To dream of castles in Spain is well; to dream of Utopia is better. Some pure lovers of art discard the formula, 'art - for-progress, ' the beautiful-useful, fearing lest the useful should deform the beautiful. They tremble to see the drudge's hand attached to the muse's arm. According to them the ideal may become perverted by too much contact with real ity. They are solicitous for the sublime if it descends as far as to humanity. Ah; they are in error! The useful, far from cir cumscribing the sublime, enlarges it. Is Aurora less splen did, clad less in purple and emerald; suffers she any diminution of majesty and radiant grace - because foreseeing an insect's thirst, she carefully secretes in the flower the dewdrop needed by the bee William Shakespeare, by Victor Hugo. The Needs of the people are greater and more complex to day than at any previous period in history. A full stomach no longer suffices for the toiler. Thanks to the printing-press and the freedom inaugurated by the Reformation and carried for ward by the great revolutions of the last one hundred and twenty-five years, the millions now demand food for the Imagi nation and for the Intellect. The Lighter Side of Life must be ministered to - not of a life, not of the life of a class or of a priv ileged few, but of All the People. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Through the Golden Gate It gives me pleasure to introduce the subject of this sketch. In the providence of God I was twice entertained in the home of his parents, as I held revival services in Sioux City, Iowa. Although at that time he did not claim to be a Christian, yet he was so very dutiful and obedient to his parents - marks which are so much wanting in the lives of so many boys these days. One thing that has lingered with me since my first acquaintance with Brenton is this: although he was a real boy, and enjoyed a romp and fun like other boys, yet he would never intrude himself on my time. The very mo ment of any indication that I was through having fun with him, that moment he would cease, and never hint that he wanted more, till he could see me advance in that direction. This was so uncommon with the general run of children that it made a lasting impression upon my mind. I am now holding revival meetings (may 1920) for the third time with his father. Since I saw Brenton last he has been converted and sanctified, and has slipped away to be with Jesus forever. The home does not seem the same without him. While the home is poorer, heaven ls richer. I went out to the silent grave, in company with his father. What a beautiful place nature has provided on that lovely hillside overlooking the Golden Gate! It is one of the beauty spots of earth. Around the grave on the greensward we knelt and asked the Lord to help us to hold out faithful to the end. Some glad day, when Jesus appears in the clouds, Bren ton's body will arise from the dust and together with loved ones all shall be for ever with their Lord. Let us all so live that we may be ready to meet him on that bright morning. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Golden Gate Fleeta had troops of friends, and often went to gay parties, where the girls danced gracefully, and swung their beautiful dresses daintily, and felt quite like little women; where the boys bowed like princes, and slipped pretty confec tions or flowers into the hands of the maidens they liked best and where brilliant lights and gay music kept the party awake long after their young eyes should have been closed in sleep. On the other hand, Gretchen's friends were very few. Her companions were the children of the street, whose wicked words often made her tremble, though she would sometimes wind her thin arm about some tattered little shoulder, and whisper that it was wicked to swear, and that mother said God wished everybody to be gentle and good. Both of the little girls had heard the blessed lesson which the Son of God taught, and IS ever teaching, to the sons of men. There are no rich and poor in His school, and whether Fleta was shown in her gilded Bible the words. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Girl of the Golden Gate The general steamship agency on The Bund was a hive of bustling travelers, their faces alight with the eagerness with which they desired to be gone their many ways up and down the world. A stranger might have imagined that most of Yokohama's European or "white" population had been possessed of a sudden desire to flee beyond the seas. It was a scene common enough, however, for that season in the gateways of the Far East. Spring, with its heart call to distant homelands, had come again to break the spell of the Orient for many and to stir an unutterable longing in the breasts of others - the men and women who dream always of the day they will "go back," but who never do.
