Book Jean Froissart and the Fabric of History

Download or read book Jean Froissart and the Fabric of History written by Peter F. Ainsworth and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Froissart's Chroniques still find enthusiastic readers 600 years after they were written. This fresh reading demonstrates that their strength lies as much in their textual richness and complexity as in their appealing subject matter--the exploits of French and English noblemen during the Hundred Years War. Ainsworth explores the literary qualities of the work and considers the range of reader responses to the text: the relative openness, ambivalence, or predictability of the writing; the relationship between narrative, ideology, and gloss; and Froissart's rewriting. The study concludes with an examination of the value and status of his final Book I in the context of the development of the whole work over forty to fifty years of literary and historical activity.

Book Censorship of Literature in Austria 1751 1848

Download or read book Censorship of Literature in Austria 1751 1848 written by Norbert Bachleitner and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-06-27 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The influence of censorship on the intellectual and political life in the Habsburg Monarchy during the period under scrutiny can hardly be overstated. This study examines the institutional foundations, operating principles, and results of the censorial activity through analysis of the prohibition lists and examination of the censors themselves. The effects of censorship on the authors, publishers, and booksellers of the time are illustrated with the help of contemporary documents. Numerous case studies focus on individual works forbidden by the censors: Romanticists like Ludwig Tieck and E. T. A. Hoffmann and even authors of classic German literature like Wieland, Goethe, and Schiller saw their works slashed, as did writers of popular French and English novels and plays. An annex documents the most important regulations along with a selection of censorial reports.

Book Abraham s Faith in Romans 4

Download or read book Abraham s Faith in Romans 4 written by Benjamin Schliesser and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2007 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of faith is at the core of Paul's theology, and the classic assage for his understanding of pistis is Genesis 15:6. After discussing the history of scholarship on the Pauline concept of faith, Benjamin Schliesser explores the literary, tradition-historical and structural questions of Genesis 15 and offers a detailed exegesis of verse 6 with its fundamental terms count, righteousness, and believe. He then points to the theological significance of this testimony on Abraham for the Jewish identity; it comes into sight in a multifaceted and nuanced process of reception, from later Old Testament texts (Psalm 106; Nehemiah 9) to a broad array of literature from Second Temple Judaism (Septuagint, Sirach 44, Jubilees 14, 4QPseudo-Jubilees, 4QMMT, 1Maccabees, Philo). In the final and most substantial step, he asks about Paul's hermeneutics of faith: How does Paul, in his exegesis of the Genesis quote in Romans 4, come to view Abraham as the father of all believers? What is the concept of faith that he develops on the basis of Genesis 15:6? Taking into account the manifold textual and thematic links between Romans 4, Romans 3:21-31, and Romans 1:16-17, a unique, twofold structure of faith discloses itself: Pistis designates first a divinely established sphere of power, i.e., a new, christologically determined salvation-historical reality, and second human participation in this reality, i.e., individual believing in the community of believers. Particularly the first aspect is generally overlooked in modern scholarship.
