Book excerpt: "As soon as the anchor touched the ground, the captain ordered a small boat to be lowered, and, leaping into it with two men, rowed toward the shore." "The captain of the schooner was one of those men who seem to have been formed for the special purpose of leading and commanding their fellows. He was not only unusually tall and powerful but he possessed voice whose softest tones riveted attention, and when it thundered forth commands in the fiercest storms, it inspired confidence heard it. His eyes were of that indescribable blue color which can exhibit either passion or tenderness intensely." ""Have you brought your kit with you, John?" inquired the captain, as the little boat shot over the smooth waters of the bay. "I do not mean to take you aboard again."" * R.M. Ballantyne was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in the famous family of printers and publishers who brought the works of Sir Walter Scott to the public. At sixteen he went to Canada to serve with the Hudson's Bay Company, and returned, six years later, to publish his first book, "Hudson's Bay: or, Life in the Wilds of North America." He worked in the family business for some years, but in 1856 to write full-time, and spent his lifetime writing books for boys -- he wrote dozens of books, in fact, in a career that stretched on for decades.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few Pacific history books have stood the test of time as well as They Came for Sandalwood, but Dorothy Shineberg's book, first published in 1967, has never been bettered. This fascinating account of the sandalwood trade describes the first regular contact between Europeans and the Melanesians of New Caledonia, the Loyalty Islands, and the New Hebrides (now Vanuatu). Shineberg studied the relationships and rivalries between European traders and European missionaries, between trader and trader, and between tribe and tribe among the indigenous peoples. Her book documents the details and color of these interactions. Unseaworthy ships, bloody battles, the hazards of sea and reef, and the firepower and inadequacies of European weapons all provide a gripping picture of the 1830s to 1860s. Valuable appendices list the ships involved, their cargoes and the location of the sandalwood stations. They Came for Sandalwood remains the only detailed account of the sandalwood trade, its routes, marketing problems and profits, and of the ships, merchants and seamen involved. It is a sharp, perceptive analysis of the confrontation of the two cultures, approached from the standpoint of Pacific history rather than a mere extension of European history into the PacificIslands.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great Pacific is the scene of our story. On a beautiful morning, many years ago, a little schooner might have been seen floating, light and graceful as a sea-mew, on the breast of the slumbering ocean. She was one of those low black-hulled vessels, with raking, taper masts, trimly cut sails, and elegant form, which we are accustomed to associate with the idea of a yacht or a pirate. She might have been the former, as far as appearance went, for the sails and decks were white as snow, and every portion of brass and copper above her water-line shone in the hot sun with dazzling brilliancy. But pleasure-seekers were not wont, in those days, to take such distant flights, or to venture into such dangerous seas-dangerous alike from the savage character of the islanders, and the numerous coral-reefs that lie hidden a few feet below the surface of the waves. Still less probable did it seem that the vessel in question could belong to the lawless class of craft to which we have referred; for, although she had what may be styled a wicked aspect, and was evidently adapted for swift sailing, neither large guns nor small arms of any kind were visible.
