Book Integration Strategy for the Southern Cone Gas Networks

Download or read book Integration Strategy for the Southern Cone Gas Networks written by Weltbank and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experts from the governments of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay, who participated in this strategic study for the Southern Cone Gas Pipeline Networks, combined their efforts to identify a shared energy alternative which would help boost the development of natural gas in the sub region, and, thus, its sustainable economic development. This study was developed in two phases: a first phase which evaluates the economic advantages of the integration of the gas networks in the sub region on the basis of data provided mainly by the governments, determining the priority projects to initiate it; and a second phase containing more detailed technical, economic, environmental and financial pre-feasibility studies for these projects. The studies clearly demonstrate that integration of gas networks has a very positive impact as a mechanism for supplying natural gas, a clean and abundant fuel in the sub region. The study concludes that implementing an integration plan will result in an increase in the competitiveness of regional economies.

Book Political Economy of Energy in the Southern Cone

Download or read book Political Economy of Energy in the Southern Cone written by Anil Hira and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2003-03-30 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hira explores the impact of the neoliberal revolution in Latin America, which claims the superiority of markets that are freed from government intervention and restrictions on trade and investment. He examines changes in the energy policy of the Southern Cone (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay) and finds that, contrary to what is claimed and expected, there is a great deal of state intervention that continues through regulatory policy. All around the world, economic markets are in flux. Policies to change these markets are part of the neoliberal revolution that claims the superiority of markets freed from government intervention and restrictions on trade and investment. The general conclusion among most academic and policy analysts who study developing countries is that market liberalization is a foregone conclusion. Developing countries' choices are constrained by two primary factors: first, the burden of massive external debt that forces them to court international finance, and second, the need to gain access to the world's largest markets in Europe and/or the United States, optimally through free trade agreements. The effects of market liberalization, including deregulation, privatization, and integration, require further scrutiny. Hira examines the effects of international market pressures on energy policy at the national, regional, and sectoral levels in Latin America's Southern Cone—Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay—who belong to the MERCOSUR common market. Contrary to what is claimed and expected, he finds that a great deal of state intervention continues through regulatory policy. He also provides an thorough set of comparative political economy case studies, along with a discussion of the MERCOSUR process with regards to energy. His analysis of the political economy of electricity and natural gas deregulation is especially relevant in the wake of the California energy crisis, the Enron debacle, and international discussions about energy deregulation. This book is of particular interest to scholars, students, and other researchers involved with Latin American economic development and energy policy.

Book Latin American and Caribbean Trade Agreements

Download or read book Latin American and Caribbean Trade Agreements written by Thomas O'Keefe and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009-06-02 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Latin American and Caribbean Trade Agreements: Keys to a Prosperous Community of the Americas is the essential reference guide for companies trading with Latin America and the Caribbean or wishing to use a country in the region as an export platform. This work fills the void in academic texts that are used to teach courses on economic integration in the Western Hemisphere. It provides a road map for the Obama Administration to launch an ambitious project designed to encourage economic growth, promote energy security, and reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions, while at the same time realistically meeting the development needs of Latin America and the Caribbean. Latin American and Caribbean Trade Agreements: Keys to a Prosperous Community of the Americas posits that the myopic focus of past United States administrations on free markets to spur economic development in the Western Hemisphere is not enough. A bolder and more ambitious project that also seeks to redress many of the deep-seated problems that have long plagued the region is required. The Community of the Americas proposed in this book rests upon the important work that has already been done at the sub-regional level in terms of economic and political reform, identifying infrastructure and human capital needs, and regulating migration. It provides a new and cohesive vision for U.S. policy in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Book excerpt: World Politics Review features are original, in-depth analyses of key public-policy questions by leading experts. Summary: The past decade has seen major changes in Latin America's energy policy landscape. After two decades of market-based reforms, followed by a political backlash against the market, Latin American governments now demonstrate a diverse range of approaches to the role of the state in energy policy. As the region develops and its middle class grows, the tension between increased energy demand and heightened environmental concerns will increasingly determine the future of Latin American energy development. And with shale gas revolutionizing the regional energy outlook, Latin America would do well to learn from its recent experiences with energy integration.

Book Security of Energy Supply in Europe

Download or read book Security of Energy Supply in Europe written by Julian Barquin and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In economic, technical and political terms, the security of energy supply is of the utmost importance for Europe. Alongside competition and sustainability, supply security represents a cornerstone of the EU s energy policy, and in times of rising geopolitical conflict plays an increasingly important role in its external relations. Within this context, the contributors analyse and explore the natural gas, nuclear, and hydrogen energy sectors, which will be of critical significance for the future of energy supplies in Europe. The book opens with an extensive exploration of the very definition of supply security and moves beyond sector-specific debates to highlight the political sensitivity surrounding energy security. The expert contributors apply a policy perspective, underpinned by theoretical discussion, to economic analysis in order to yield policy-relevant conclusions. They illustrate that the EU lacks a coherent transnational energy policy, that national energy policies fail to match EU goals and that, ultimately, sustainable energy policies, more competition, and better regulation will improve global welfare. Academics and EU policymakers both at national and international levels will find that the topical policy recommendations, extensive overview of supply security, and detailed perspectives on the natural gas, nuclear and hydrogen sectors presented herewith constitute an invaluable reference and research tool.
