Book excerpt: Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is a noninvasive treatment for a variety of intracranial lesions. Unlike conventional radiation therapy or whole brain radiotherapy, SRS is designed to focus a radiation dose on a predefined target while minimizing the radioactive dose outside of the target. The advanced imaging techniques, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), have enabled precise, submillimeter targeting of intracranial lesions in three dimensional space using different SRS systems. As the various modern SRS systems represent a substantial investment, an evidence-based approach to a purchasing decisions serves the interests of patients and healthcare providers. The purpose of this report is to retrieve and review existing evidence comparing different stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) systems with regard to accuracy and precision, clinical safety and effectiveness, cost-effectiveness and to review evidence-based guidelines for particular SRS systems.
