Book Gambetta Life and Letters Classic Reprint

Download or read book Gambetta Life and Letters Classic Reprint written by LE ON. GAMBETTA and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-24 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gambetta, Life and Letters Two women, Mme. Leonie Léon and Mme. Juliette Adam, claim to have tamed the lion amowreua: and taught him how to behave like a gentleman. The former was for ten years his faithful companion; his letters prove to us that in her he found encouragement before the battle and sweet consolation after he had sacrificed his all and received worse than nothing - ingratitude - in return. And yet we cannot help thinking that his position must have suffered from being unable to take her into society - that respectable, middle-class society with its rigid code of morals. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gambetta When M. Louis Battifol asked me for a book on Gambetta, and expressed a desire that its publication should coincide with the signing of Peace, I felt it impossible to decline the honour. I wrote these pages during the rare moments of leisure allowed to me by my duties in the Chamber; and thus, in a certain sense, 1 lived through the two wars at one and the same time. I disregarded all panegyrics, all pamphlets, all legends, whether flattering or not: I sought the truth alone - and no homage could be greater. I have ignored the enthusiasms and hot-headed passions of our youth, and even the claims of gratitude - for it was Gambetta who launched me on the life of politics. In this book, only one passion is to be found: the passion for France. He loved her ardently. He gave his whole life for her. He will live in history as the personification of the nation's resistance in 1870. IT is ideal was always the regeneration of his country. His memory is for ever associated with the restoration of justice. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gambetta: And the Foundation of the Third Republic In the year 1818 Baptista Gambetta, a Genoese of the village of Celle-Ligure, near Savona, resolved to leave his native coast and settle in the interior of France. He came of a race of seamen who for generations had traded across the Gulf of Lyons with cargoes of macaroni, oil, and pottery. But the loss of a brother in a storm had filled him with disgust of the sea, and though he was minded to return home in later life and to die with the sound of her waves in his ears, he determined to give his sons the chance of lives beyond the range of her caprices. His choice fell on Cahors, a famous old town lying about a bend of the river Lot, some seventy miles north of Toulouse. The place had lost much of the ancient prosperity along with which it had acquired, as a line in Dante reminds us, its harsh medieval reputation for usury, but was still a flourishing market centre, and Baptista Gambetta must have had frequent business relations with it. Thither he transferred himself with his family - three boys, of whom the youngest, Joseph, was only four years old - and on the edge of the market square opened a shop, the Bazar Genois, for the sale of groceries and pottery which he had formerly handled as freight. The family tradition sent the boy Joseph to sea. When ten years old he sailed as cabin boy on a French ship bound for Valparaiso. Book Life and Letters of Dolly Madison Classic Reprint

Download or read book Life and Letters of Dolly Madison Classic Reprint written by Allen C. Clark and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Letters of Dolly Madison Mr. And Mrs. James Franklin Hood, at their residence in Washington, were the hosts of the Dolly Madison Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, the evening of May 19, 1911. At their request a paper was prepared for the entertainment of the guests. That paper is the nucleus of this elaboration. If, perchance, the reader is entertained, the acknowledgment is due to them. The Public Ledger, Philadelphia, June 2, 1912, in an interesting article, says that Dolly Madison, probably above all other American women, has, for some not any too well understood reason, been regarded with a sympathetic and sentimental interest. And, The Evening Star, in its able editorial column. May 12, 1912, has: "A little myth is mixed with her fame, but that is to be allowed for. It inheres in all fame." That the unfading fame of Mrs. Madison has its foundation more on fact or more on fancy, the reader, it is believed, has, within these pages, sufficient evidence to pass judgment. Deal gently with us, ye who read! - Oliver Wendell Holmes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gail Hamilton's Life in Letters, Vol. 2: Edited by H. Augusta Dodge Your characterization of Dickens tallies admirably with that of another friend of mine, but did not you enjoy his reading? I did, and mean to hear him again. I wish you were here to go with me, and then you could amuse yourself between whiles with raving against Boston infidelity. I have had a little experience of it in one shape lately. I discovered quite accidentally that ten per cent. on the retail price of books is the minimum price paid to authors. As my books have brought me only from six and two-thirds to seven and one-half per cent. I laid the case before a lawyer friend, who has made investigations among the book men, which results in a conviction that I have been underpaid, and I have broken off connection with my publishers. Of course, it was not a thing to be lightly done, and I have not done it lightly. It began in December, and is only just completed - and hardly that. But where I have been on terms of such intimate friendship I cannot come down to mere business relations. Mr. - - had the matter entirely in his own hands. Book Royal Women Their History and Romance Classic Reprint

Download or read book Royal Women Their History and Romance Classic Reprint written by Mary Ridpath Mann and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Royal Women Their History and Romance "History is the essence of innumerable biographies." So says Carlyle. It was the author's purpose when these lectures were written to place before the audience in a new light some of the women who have helped to make up the world's history. No effort was made to prepare such as would be suitable for school-room or study class, in which every date must be absolutely correct, every fact beyond question. These things lie within the province of the text-book. The author takes for granted that the great historic events are known to all, and has therefore endeavored to use history solely to illustrate character. It is the charm of history that no matter how well we may know the facts - the bricks and mortar, as it were, that have builded the historical fabric - we turn with eagerness to any new information which a little research may bring to light, even though it add slightly to our former knowledge. It is the private life of royal personages which interests us. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
