Book Thinking in Cases

    Book Details:
  • Author : Markus Asper
  • Publisher : Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
  • Release : 2020-01-20
  • ISBN : 311066903X
  • Pages : 251 pages

Download or read book Thinking in Cases written by Markus Asper and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-01-20 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who is afraid of case literature? In an influential article ("Thinking in Cases", 1996), John Forrester made a case for studying case literature more seriously, exemplifying his points, mostly, with casuistic traditions of law. Unlike in modern literatures, case collections make up a significant portion of ancient literary traditions, such as Mesopotamian, Greek, and Chinese, mostly in medical and forensic contexts. The genre of cases, however, has usually not been studied in its own right by modern scholars. Due to its pervasiveness, case literature lends itself to comparative studies to which this volume intends to make a contribution. While cases often present truly fascinating epistemic puzzles, in addition they offer aesthetically pleasing reading experiences, due to their narrative character. Therefore, the case, understood as a knowledge-transmitting narrative about particulars, allows for both epistemic and aesthetic approaches. This volume presents seven substantial studies of cases and case literature: Topics touched upon are ancient Greek medical, forensic, philosophical and mathematical cases, medical cases from imperial China, and 20th-century American medical case writing. The collection hopes to offer a pilot of what to do with and how to think about cases.

Book The Impossible Destiny of Cutie Grackle

Download or read book The Impossible Destiny of Cutie Grackle written by Shawn K. Stout and published by Holiday House. This book was released on 2022-05-31 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you believe in impossible things? Cutie Grackle does. She has to. Otherwise, she’ll never be more than a lonely 10 year old in a cursed family. Cutie Grackle is used to being different—she lives alone on a mountain with her feeble-minded uncle, and when she’s not sucking pebbles to trick her stomach into feeling full, she’s chatting with a weathered garden gnome for company. But having a flock of ravens follow you is more than just different. Cutie worries the birds are connected to the curse Uncle Horace tends to mutter about. And she’s right. The ravens present her with a fortune from a cookie, and when she touches it she’s pulled into a vision from her family’s past. It involves the curse and her long-lost mother. The birds offer up a series of objects, each imbued with memories that eventually reveal Cutie must do what her mother could not: break the curse. Part outdoor survival adventure, part fantastical quest, Shawn K. Stout’s The Impossible Destiny of Cutie Grackle is a journey of hope, heart, and a willingness to believe in the impossible.

Book The Fate of Atlantis

Download or read book The Fate of Atlantis written by Holiday Shapero and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2018-05-23 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sweeping technology that has come to define life on Earth is a monster with very long fingers as the sixth great extinction confirms. Yet where did it come from, and what of its tail? Some say that the tip of its tail reaches far into the distant past. But it is also true that many people on Earth have not heard of the monsters origin, have never glimpsed its tail. It might, at first, seem odd until one considers that the birthplace of the monster sunk beneath the sea. Yet we have been graced with the tale of that ancient land. Plato confirmed that the land, though long forgotten, indeed existed. The record of the sinking of Atlantis as told to the Greek lawmaker Solon by the priests of Sais in Egypt has come down to us intact. To glimpse the monsters tail, we must travel back in time, long before Plato, back to the days of Athena, to a time before her beloved land met its fatea fate that was linked to Atlantis.

Book The Myth of Analysis

  • Publisher : Northwestern University Press
  • Release : 1997
  • ISBN : 9780810116511
  • Pages : 326 pages

Download or read book The Myth of Analysis written by James Hillman and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work, acclaimed Jungian James Hillman examines the concepts of myth, insights, eros, body, and the mytheme of female inferiority, as well as the need for the freedom to imagine and to feel psychic reality. By examining these ideas, and the role they have played both in and outside of the therapeutic setting, Hillman mounts a compelling argument that, rather than locking them away in some inner asylum or subjecting them to daily self-treatment, man's "peculiarities" can become an integral part of a rich and fulfilling daily life. Originally published by Northwestern University Press in 1972, this work had a profound impact on a nation emerging self-aware from the 1960s, as well as on the era's burgeoning feminist movement. It remains a profound critique of therapy and the psychological viewpoint, and it is one of Hillman's most important and enduring works.

Book excerpt: Set in the 1960s, this novel exploring the mysteries of the multiverse—and of human identity—is “a rare page turner that avoids the obvious traps.” —The New York Times Book Review Garrett Adams, an uptight behavioral psychology professor who refuses to embrace the 1960s, is in a slump. The dispirited rats in his latest experiment aren't yielding results, and his beloved Yankees are losing. As he sits at a New York City bar watching the Yanks strike out, he knows he needs a change. Then, at a bookstore, he meets a mysterious young woman, Daphne, who draws him into the turbulent and exciting world of Vietnam War protests and the music of Bob Dylan and the Beatles, and he starts to emerge from the numbness and grief over his father’s death in World War II. But when Daphne evolves into four separate versions of herself, Garrett’s life becomes complicated as he devotes himself to answering the questions about character and destiny raised by her iterations—an obsession that threatens to upend his relationship with a beautiful art historian, destroy his teaching job, and dissolve a longtime friendship. The Daphnes seem to exist in separate realities that challenge the laws of physics and call into question everything Garrett thought he knew. Now he must decide what is vision, what is science, and what is delusion. “[A] mind-bending experimental thriller.” —CrimeReads “An immensely interesting concept . . . dig[s] deep into psychology, philosophy, physics, and, most importantly, politics as Daphne shakes Garrett out of his indifference toward the cultural turmoil of the late ’60s.” —Kirkus Reviews “Brett's imaginative, amusing debut will appeal to fans of Nell Zink.” —Publishers Weekly “This absorbing novel vividly mines the physics and psychology of reality, and the reader’s reward is a moving story of love and loss.” —Hilma Wolitzer, author of An Available Man
