Book excerpt: Ole Bruun focuses on a community of nomadic livestock herders in present-day Mongolia. He depicts their transition from a contained, Soviet-era collective to modern times and addresses the most essential conditions for their continued survival and prosperity in the age of the market: the adaptability of their own culture and working strategies, government policy, and international attention. By studying the nomadic practice of animal husbandry in the context of family farms, Bruun points out the similarity to the peasant economy defined by the Russian agricultural economist Alexander Chayanov nearly a century ago. In both economies, the labor-consumer balance and life-cycle variations commonly set the term for economic strategies, yet the pastoral economy involves a highly specialized form of agriculture in which the scale of exchange determines wealth and lifestyle. In a vast territory such as Mongolia, infrastructure, social benefits, and other means of state support are crucial to prevent herders from sliding into a subsistence orientation, eventually leading to poverty.

Book Nomads South Siberia

Download or read book Nomads South Siberia written by Vainshtein and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-04-02 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are few, if any, detailed first-hand accounts of Inner Asian pastoralism available to Western readers. Drawing on archival sources and his own extensive fieldwork Sevyan Vainshtein describes the economy of the nomadic pastoralists of Tuva, a region on the borders of Mongolia and the USSR. It is a detailed account of the migratory movements, the husbandry of the different herds, the reindeer economy and the hunting, fishing, agriculture and technology of the peoples of the region. Dr Vainshtein includes a section on the history and social structure of the nomads and reaches some conclusions on the rise of the State among the nomads of Central Asia. The main aim of the book is to acquaint readers with accurate and detailed field material on the economy of Inner Asian nomads - a subject which has invited much speculation hitherto, but usually on the basis of inadequate data. It will be invaluable to all anthropologists and to specialists in Soviet and Asian Studies.

Book Nomadic Pastoralism Among the Mongol Herders

Download or read book Nomadic Pastoralism Among the Mongol Herders written by Charlotte Marchina and published by . This book was released on 2021-07-15 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, based on anthropological research carried out by the author between 2008 and 2016, addresses the spatial features of nomadic pastoralism among the Mongol herders of Mongolia and Southern Siberia from a cross-comparative perspective. In addition to classical methods of survey, Charlotte Marchina innovatively used GPS recordings to analyse the ways in which pastoralists envision and concretely occupy the landscape, which they share with their animals and invisible entities. The data, represented in abundant and original cartography, provides a better understanding of the mutual adaptations of both herders and animals in the common use of unfenced pastures, not only between different herders but also between different species. The author also highlights the herders' adaptive strategies at a time of rapid socio-political and environmental changes in these areas of the world.

Book Global Livestock Production Systems

Download or read book Global Livestock Production Systems written by Timothy P. Robinson and published by Food & Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO). This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Informed livestock sector policy development and priority setting is heavily dependent on a good understanding of livestock production systems. In a collaborative effort between the Food and Agriculture Organization and the International Livestock Research Institute, stock has been taken of where we have come from in agricultural systems classification and mapping; the current state of the art; and the directions in which research and data collection efforts need to take in the future. The book also addresses issues relating to the intensity and scale of production, moving from what is done to how it is done. The intensification of production is an area of particular importance, for it is in the intensive systems that changes are occurring most rapidly and where most information is needed on the implications that intensification of production may have for livelihoods, poverty alleviation, animal diseases, public health and environmental outcomes. A series of case studies is provided, linking livestock production systems to rural livelihoods and poverty and examples of the application of livestock production system maps are drawn from livestock production, now and in the future; livestock's impact on the global environment; animal and public health; and livestock and livelihoods. This book provides a formal reference to Version 5 of the global livestock production systems map, and to revised estimates of the numbers of rural poor livestock keepers, by country and livestock production system.

Book Ferghana Valley

Download or read book Ferghana Valley written by S. Frederick Starr and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-12-18 with total page 531 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ferghana Valley can reasonably be said to lie in the heart of Central Asia. As such, the Valley has made an inordinate contribution to the history and culture of the region as a whole, as well as significantly affecting the economic, political and religious spheres. This book looks at the region over time, from its early history to the present. It embraces not just the obvious fields of politics, economics and religion, but also ethnography, sociology and culture, and includes the insights of leading scholars from all three Ferghana countries. The book discusses various questions of identity relating to the region, showing how the identity of the Ferghana Valley relates to the emerging national identities of the three post-colonial states that are still gradually emerging from the demise of the Soviet Union, as well as how an understanding of the Ferghana Valley is key to understanding Central Asia itself.
