To many, Marcie Hugo is a hero for the part she played in preventing a war between The Blind Spot and Scala City, but to The Eye and her best friend Sal, she’s a liar and a traitor. She manipulated The Eye to get what she needed from him, which lead to the murder of a connected man. Being Wrench’s daughter, she’s untouchable, but because of her The Eye now has a price on his head. He might be safely hidden, but time’s running out. If he remains in The Blind Spot, it won’t be long before someone finds him and cuts his throat. While preventing the war, Marcie wrongly accused Sal’s dad of colluding with factions in Scala City in an attempt raise tensions between the two sides. She’s known the family since birth, yet she still pointed the finger at them. If nothing else, Marcie must do the right thing for those she’s wronged. For The Eye to survive, she’ll need to liberate him from his temporary prison and get him away from The Blind Spot. Although Sal might never forgive her, she can help him by getting the lung transplant he so desperately needs. There’s only one place that’ll serve both functions, but the path to Prime City involves crossing a wasteland filled with marauding militia. Can Marcie Hugo get The Eye from prison before an assassin claims the price on his head? Can she get away from The Blind Spot without her dad’s knowledge? Can they survive a journey across the wastelands that for so many has meant death? And if they do get there, what will they find in Prime City? What will it take to get Sal’s lung transplant? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lone man who carries the name of the Empire's ultimate shame and anonymity, ‘John Smith.’ Stripped of everything from his past, cast out and stumbling through the world he sees everything he grew up believing with new eyes. The harsh realities of his world nip at his flanks and heels every day of his new life, while memories and painful traumas of his old life plague his days and even nights. ~~~~~ Excerpt ~~~~~ Samson opened his eyes with a splitting headache and dry mouth, feeling slightly disoriented from the flooding rush of his life's memories over two decades prior. The series of dreams had assaulted him like the days they had happened all tumbled together. The first was pleasant, but the second left him feeling like he was still experiencing it. It took him several breaths to realize that he was indeed older and these injuries were fresh, not inflicted by the dream. The confusion between the threshold of waking and jarring dreams was disorienting, made worse by the fog of painkillers. He was stiff and sore like he had spent all day lifting weights, not stretched after and then had laid stationary for hours. The glare from the lighting was oppressive, like it was being shined directly into his brain straight through his closed lids. With an irritated groan he turned his head to the left. The stabs of pain, and protesting muscles in his neck and back made him wish he hadn't. Cracking his eyes, knowing he wasn't going to be able to sleep anymore, the three human shaped shadows solidified into Persephone, and her mother and father. Samson's painful irritation at waking up in such miserable conditions quickly turned to confusion as he looked around the unfamiliar room, washed out in glaring light, turning his eyes only. Since everything else hurt to move, including his grumpy waking up face, he decided not to push his luck. Why everyone was looking at him was disconcerting. Why he was in a strange bed was puzzling. How he arrived here was confusing. And why Lady Celine was in a similarly uncomfortable bed next to him was baffling. Persephone leaned forward and shoved something cold between his lips. Her only instruction was, "Open." Curiosity giving way to trust, Samson realized it was an ice chip. The sweet explosion of cold and wet water in his mouth tasted better than any meal he had ever had. The prone Lady Celine was the first to sarcastically assault him, "So Mister 'First Gladiator of the Empire', what has been running through your head the last three quarters of an hour?" Baffled by the question, a different question of his own arrived in his mind. All he could croak through his dried tongue and lips was, "Time?" Lady Celine looked sunken and pale, in her bed. The fluid tubes running into her from every direction indicated 'hospital' of some kind as his brain started coming up to speed. Phyllip grumbled, "Almost time for dinner, and time for you to answer the question."

Download or read book Punishment and Desert written by J. Kleinig and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Superficial acquaintance with the literature on punishment leaves a fairly definite impression. There are two approaches to punishment - retributive and utilitarian - and while some attempts may be made to reconcile them, it is the former rather than the latter which requires the reconciliation. Taken by itself the retributive approach is primitive and unenlightened, falling short of the rational civilized humanitarian values which we have now acquired. Certainly this is the dominant impression left by 'popular' discussions of the SUbject. And retributive vs. utilitarian seems to be the mould in which most philosophical dis cussions are cast. The issues are far more complex than this. Punishment may be con sidered in a great variety of contexts - legal, educational, parental, theological, informal, etc. - and in each of these contexts several im portant moral questions arise. Approaches which see only a simple choice between retributivism and utilitarianism tend to obscure this variety and plurality. But even more seriously, the distinction between retributivism and utilitarianism is far from clear. That it reflects the traditional distinction between deontological and teleological ap proaches to ethics serves to transfer rather than to resolve the un clarity. Usually it is said that retributive approaches seek to justify acts by reference to features which are intrinsic to them, whereas utilitarian approaches appeal to the consequences of such acts. This, however, makes assumptions about the individuation of acts which are difficult to justify.
