Book Galactic Dynamics in the Era of Large Surveys IAU S353

Download or read book Galactic Dynamics in the Era of Large Surveys IAU S353 written by Monica Valluri and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-07-31 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Galactic dynamics is fundamental to understanding the formation of galaxies, their internal evolution and their current structure. While galactic dynamics has traditionally focused on the evolution of the stellar components of galaxies, studies over the past two decades have shown that all aspects of galaxy evolution are strongly influenced by the interplay between the dynamics of stars, gas, and dark matter. IAU Symposium 353, is the first major symposium in more than a decade focused on the dynamics of galaxies and stellar systems, covering the recent explosion in the availability of kinematical data both for individual stars in the Milky Way and wide field line-of-sight kinematics for large samples of external galaxies. These proceedings describe recent developments that aim to transform our understanding of the dynamics, structure, formation and evolution of our own host galaxy, the Milky Way, as well as galaxies in the universe at large.

Book Dynamics of Astrophysical Discs

Download or read book Dynamics of Astrophysical Discs written by J. A. Sellwood and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-01-22 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covers recent developments in both theory and observations of discs in a wide variety of astrophysical contexts. The volume is based on a conference held at the University of Manchester in 1988, which brought together an international group of experts in a wide range of fields. The papers cover planetary ring systems, discs in star-forming regions, protoplanetary discs, accretion and galaxy discs--areas related by the remarkable similarity between the dynamical problems posed by each type of disc. This will be a valuable reference work for researchers and postgraduate students in many branches of astronomy.

Download or read book The Far future Universe written by George Francis Rayner Ellis and published by Templeton Foundation Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Will our universe continue to expand 100 billion years from now? Does human life and all intelligence inevitably come to an end as the universe evolves? Could our present space be converted catastrophically in to a new kind of space governed by different physical laws? Can we construct a theology of the future universe? Would the continuation of the universe for eternity be a good thing? The Far-Future Universe presents eighteen provocative essays offering speculations on various scenarios for the future, from the perspectives of cosmology, physics, biology, humanity and theology. Other contributors consider global time, artificial intelligence, religious ideas about the end of the world, and the nature of existence. Stimulating, challenging and exciting, these visions of the far future are a starting point for further reflection and speculation.

Book The Baltic States and Their Region

Download or read book The Baltic States and Their Region written by David James Smith and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2005 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With EU and NATO membership for the Baltic States now a reality, this volume examines the relationship of the three countries, their constituent peoples and their surrounding region to the wider Europe, both historically and in the period since 1991. In particular, the contributors seek to locate the Baltic area within the manifold debates surrounding the concepts of "new" and "old" Europe, including those occasioned by the current conflict in Iraq. Covering issues of identity, sovereignty, minority rights, security and relations with Russia the work assesses the likely contribution of this region to an enlarged Euro-Atlantic community. It will appeal to specialists and students in the fields of area studies, history, politics and international relations.

Book Contemporary German Cultural Studies

Download or read book Contemporary German Cultural Studies written by Alison M. Phipps and published by Hodder Education. This book was released on 2002 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the study of German comes under the influence of other disciplinary approaches, the notion of culture has evolved from one focused largely on the arts to an approach which understands culture as the way of life of a people or a period. This introductory book examines contemporary German culture not only in the context of its intellectual life--the media, the arts, political figures and events --but also in the context of the theories and methodologies of cultural studies, anthropology, and sociology. Providing a critical assessment of the diversity of German culture and identity, Contemporary German Cultural Studies focuses on the contemporary period and at the same time considers the influence of the past and forces such as globalization. The emphasis is on the interpretation and analysis of the varieties of German cultures--the processes, the practices and the performances. The book also explores intercultural issues, including the implications of studying German culture from an anglophone perspective.

Book Illicit Antiquities

Download or read book Illicit Antiquities written by Neil Brodie and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-08-27 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The exploitation of archaeological sites for commercial gain is a serious problem worldwide. In peace and during wartime archaeological sites and cultural institutions, both on land and underwater, are attacked and their contents robbed for sale on an international 'antiquities' market. Objects are excavated without record, smuggled across borders and sold for exorbitant prices in the salesrooms of Europe and North America. In some countries this looting has now reached such a scale as to threaten the very survival of their archaeological and cultural heritage. This volume highlights the deleterious effects of the trade on cultural heritage, but in particular it focuses upon questions of legal and local responses: How can people become involved in the preservation of their past and what, in economic terms, are the costs and benefits? Are international conventions or export restrictions effective in diminishing the volume of the trade and the scale of its associated destruction?

Book Recent Advances in Qualitative Physics

Download or read book Recent Advances in Qualitative Physics written by Boi Faltings and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These twenty-eight contributions report advances in one of the most active research areas in artificial intellgence. Qualitative modeling techniques are an essential part of building second generation knowledge-based systems. This book provides a timely overview of the field while also giving some indications about applications that appear to be feasible now or in the near future. Chapters are organized into sections covering modeling and simulation, ontologies, computational issues, and qualitative analysis. Modeling a physical system in order to simulate it or solve particular problems regarding the system is an important motivation of qualitative physics, involving formal procedures and concepts. The chapters in the section on modeling address the problem of how to set up and structure qualitative models, particularly for use in simulation. Ontology, or the science of being, is the basis for all modeling. Accordingly, chapters on ontologies discuss problems fundamental for finding representational formalism and inference mechanisms appropriate for different aspects of reasoning about physical systems. Computational issues arising from attempts to turn qualitative theories into practical software are then taken up. In addition to simulation and modeling, qualitative physics can be used to solve particular problems dealing with physical systems, and the concluding chapters present techniques for tasks ranging from the analysis of behavior to conceptual design.
