Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever shuddered at the thought of retirement? Considered it a fearful, even inconceivable proposition? "Retire? Why in the world would you want to do that? In Gaining Altitude, Rebecca Milliken tells the saga of her odyssey into retirement after turning 60, an odyssey that included changing much more than she had anticipated. She invites the audience to accompany her in this memoir as she recounts the highs and lows of laying the groundwork for retirement, making the leap, and finding her way to what lay beyond. The journey she describes is one without a playbook: the ambivalence and second-guessing, the leap and the limbo that followed - opening the way for the surprising and even exhilarating experience of free fall and freedom, then a "rewirement" - the discovery of an entirely new avocation - writing. This memoir invites the reader to think differently about retirement. It beckons those with long careers to imagine what might come next: the cultivation of unimagined possibilities in retirement.

Book excerpt: What does it take to be one of the world's best high-altitude mountain climbers? A lot of fundraising; traveling in some of the world's most dangerous countries; enduring cold bivouacs, searing lungs, and a cloudy mind when you can least afford one. It means learning the hard lessons the mountains teach. Steve House built his reputation on ascents throughout the Alps, Canada, Alaska, the Karakoram and the Himalaya that have expanded possibilities of style, speed, and difficulty. In 2005 Steve and alpinist Vince Anderson pioneered a direct new route on the Rupal Face of 26,600-foot Nanga Parbat, which had never before been climbed in alpine style. It was the third ascent of the face and the achievement earned Steveand Vince the first Piolet d"or (Golden Ice Axe) awarded to North Americans. Steve is an accomplished and spellbinding storyteller in the tradition of Maurice Herzog and Lionel Terray. Beyond the Mountain is a gripping read destined to be a mountain classic. And it

Book Flying beyond the stall

Download or read book Flying beyond the stall written by Douglas A. Joyce and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The X-31 Enhanced Fighter Maneuverability Demonstrator was unique among experimental aircraft. A joint effort of the United States and Germany, the X-31 was the only X-plane to be designed, manufactured, and flight tested as an international collaboration. It was also the only X-plane to support two separate test programs conducted years apart, one administered largely by NASA and the other by the U.S. Navy, as well as the first X-plane ever to perform at the Paris Air Show. Flying Beyond the Stall begins by describing the government agencies and private-sector industries involved in the X-31 program, the genesis of the supermaneuverability concept and its initial design breakthroughs, design and fabrication of two test airframes, preparation for the X-31's first flight, and the first flights of Ship #1 and Ship #2. Subsequent chapters discuss envelope expansion, handling qualities (especially at high angles of attack), and flight with vectored thrust. The book then turns to the program's move to NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center and actual flight test data. Additional tasking, such as helmet-mounted display evaluations, handling quality studies, aerodynamic parameter estimation, and a "tailless" study are also discussed. The book describes how, in the aftermath of a disastrous accident with Ship #1 in 1995, Ship #2 was prepared for its outstanding participation in the Paris Air Show. The aircraft was then shipped back to Edwards AFB and put into storage until the late 1990s, when it was refurbished for participation in the U. S. Navy's VECTOR program. The book ends with a comprehensive discussion of lessons learned and includes an Appendix containing detailed information.

Book The Other Book of John

Download or read book The Other Book of John written by John Geen and published by LifeRich Publishing. This book was released on 2022-11-25 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did John's belief in God influence his life? In June 1933, Canada was in the depths of an ongoing Depression. As the third child born into a poor farm family working a hilly fifty acres littered with boulders, John Geen grew up amid a turbulent childhood where he learned to go without and relied on his faith in God. In a retelling of his life experiences, Geen chronicles his often obstacle-lined road to future fortune that began in the stubble fields of Manitoba harvesting wheat. He dealt with a cantankerous old rooster, school adventures and influences, and misfortunes that tested him in ways he never imagined. As he leads others through his varied experiences, Geen details his path as he dropped out of high school to marry the love of his life, started a family, secured jobs without academic credentials, relocated to the United States, and overcame seemingly insurmountable odds to attain professional success. The Other Book of John is the true story of how an uneducated boy emerged from poverty and the obscurity of an Ontario farm to realize personal and professional accomplishments.

Book Dressing for Altitude

Download or read book Dressing for Altitude written by Dennis R. Jenkins and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 2012-08-27 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Since its earliest days, flight has been about pushing the limits of technology and, in many cases, pushing the limits of human endurance. The human body can be the limiting factor in the design of aircraft and spacecraft. Humans cannot survive unaided at high altitudes. There have been a number of books written on the subject of spacesuits, but the literature on the high-altitude pressure suits is lacking. This volume provides a high-level summary of the technological development and operational use of partial- and full-pressure suits, from the earliest models to the current high altitude, full-pressure suits used for modern aviation, as well as those that were used for launch and entry on the Space Shuttle. The goal of this work is to provide a resource on the technology for suits designed to keep humans alive at the edge of space."--NTRS Web site.
