He’s finished his swimming lessons and passed his swim test, and he’s a great jumper, so he’s not scared at all. “Looks easy,” says Jabari, watching the other kids take their turns. But when his dad squeezes his hand, Jabari squeezes back. He needs to figure out what kind of special jump to do anyway, and he should probably do some stretches before climbing up onto the diving board. In a sweetly appealing tale of overcoming your fears, newcomer Gaia Cornwall captures a moment between a patient and encouraging father and a determined little boy you can’t help but root for.

Book Sloterdijk s Anthropotechnics

Download or read book Sloterdijk s Anthropotechnics written by Patrick Roney and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-03-16 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter Sloterdijk is an internationally renowned philosopher and thinker whose work is now seen as increasingly relevant to our contemporary world situation and the multiple crises that punctuate it, including those within ethical, political, economic, technological, and ecological realms. This volume focuses upon one of his central ideas, anthropotechnics. Broadly speaking, anthropotechnics refers to the technological constitution of the human as its fundamental mode of existence, which is characterized by the ability to create dwelling places that ‘immunize’ human beings from exterior threats while at the same time instituting practices and exercises that call on humanity to transcend itself ‘ascetically’. The essays included in this volume enter a critical dialogue with Sloterdijk and his many philosophical interlocutors in order to interrogate the many implications of anthropotechnics in relation to some of the most pressing issues of our time, including and especially the question of the future of humanity in relation to globalism and modernization, climate change, the post-secular, neoliberalism, and artificial intelligence. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Angelaki.

Book excerpt: In our world today, there is a yearning to connect to beauty; a rising tide of sensitivity and awareness of the immense difficulties we are facing; a need to find a sense of redemption. Poetry offers this. It opens the window to paradox, giving voice to both the souls grief and its longing for the ecstatic. Julie Taras poetry falls in the tradition of the mystical poets who, through the magic of words, open the eyeand the soulto the awareness of the infinite; of timelessness; of presence. To enter into Songs of Gaia is to enter into a world where the desert wind becomes a wild womans breath; where the rivers youve drunk deeply from become the blood of the Mothers veins, and where the sound of your beating heart becomes the rhythm of the very universe in which you live.

Book On Gaia

  • Author : Toby Tyrrell
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2013-07-21
  • ISBN : 1400847915
  • Pages : 325 pages

Download or read book On Gaia written by Toby Tyrrell and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2013-07-21 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A critical examination of James Lovelock's controversial Gaia hypothesis One of the enduring questions about our planet is how it has remained continuously habitable over vast stretches of geological time despite the fact that its atmosphere and climate are potentially unstable. James Lovelock's Gaia hypothesis posits that life itself has intervened in the regulation of the planetary environment in order to keep it stable and favorable for life. First proposed in the 1970s, Lovelock's hypothesis remains highly controversial and continues to provoke fierce debate. On Gaia undertakes the first in-depth investigation of the arguments put forward by Lovelock and others—and concludes that the evidence doesn't stack up in support of Gaia. Toby Tyrrell draws on the latest findings in fields as diverse as climate science, oceanography, atmospheric science, geology, ecology, and evolutionary biology. He takes readers to obscure corners of the natural world, from southern Africa where ancient rocks reveal that icebergs were once present near the equator, to mimics of cleaner fish on Indonesian reefs, to blind fish deep in Mexican caves. Tyrrell weaves these and many other intriguing observations into a comprehensive analysis of the major assertions and lines of argument underpinning Gaia, and finds that it is not a credible picture of how life and Earth interact. On Gaia reflects on the scientific evidence indicating that life and environment mutually affect each other, and proposes that feedbacks on Earth do not provide robust protection against the environment becoming uninhabitable—or against poor stewardship by us.

Download or read book Gaian Systems written by Bruce Clarke and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2020-09-29 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A groundbreaking look at Gaia theory’s intersections with neocybernetic systems theory Often seen as an outlier in science, Gaia has run a long and varied course since its formulation in the 1970s by atmospheric chemist James Lovelock and microbiologist Lynn Margulis. Gaian Systems is a pioneering exploration of the dynamic and complex evolution of Gaia’s many variants, with special attention to Margulis’s foundational role in these developments. Bruce Clarke assesses the different dialects of systems theory brought to bear on Gaia discourse. Focusing in particular on Margulis’s work—including multiple pieces of her unpublished Gaia correspondence—he shows how her research and that of Lovelock was concurrent and conceptually parallel with the new discourse of self-referential systems that emerged within neocybernetic systems theory. The recent Gaia writings of Donna Haraway, Isabelle Stengers, and Bruno Latour contest its cybernetic status. Clarke engages Latour on the issue of Gaia’s systems description and extends his own systems-theoretical synthesis under what he terms “metabiotic Gaia.” This study illuminates current issues in neighboring theoretical conversations—from biopolitics and the immunitary paradigm to NASA astrobiology and the Anthropocene. Along the way, he points to science fiction as a vehicle of Gaian thought. Delving into many issues not previously treated in accounts of Gaia, Gaian Systems describes the history of a theory that has the potential to help us survive an environmental crisis of our own making.

Book The Pursuit of Clarity

Download or read book The Pursuit of Clarity written by Jeremy Albertsen and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2013-11 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Pursuit of Clarity, author Jeremy Albertsen seeks to reveal the different levels of awareness and illuminates the different ways people view the world. He explores how these factors affect the way people interact with each other and our environment. In order to gain clarity, Albertsen made the choice to pursue a new way of life-to walk away from the things and events that were affecting his life and find a new path. He gave up the distractions, intoxicants, and numbing habits that Western culture uses addictively and sought to find a simpler, more enriching life. As part of this journey, he began writing a journal that he called The Pursuit of Clarity, and with every step, he chronicled the wisdom he gained. Following his own inner guidance, over the next years he found his balance and came to love life lived in concert with nature. He felt at peace in his body and began to feel good not about what he'd cut out of his life, but what he had put into his life. As we achieve higher levels of awareness we become empowered to raise our consciousness and activate dormant potentials to evolution. We can achieve perfect health, longevity and the magic of our quantum potential with the understanding of who we are and why we are here. Whether you want to participate or just be, The Pursuit of Clarity places you on the crest of the wave of human evolution as it reveals wisdom gathered on this journey.
