Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gage Design and Gage-Making: A Treatise on the Development of Gaging Systems for Interchangeable Manufacture, the Design of Different Types of Gages and Their Production, Including Precision Machining Operations, Lapping, and Various Modern Appliances for Gage Measurement The cost of manufacturing any mechanism may be greatly affected, first, by the tolerances specified, and, second, by the gages used to insure that these tolerances are adhered to. There has been, and still is, a great deal of misunderstanding with regard to tolerances and their application in shop work. Briefly stated, tolerances should be based upon the working requirements of the mechanism to be made, and should be as large as possible, consistent with the purpose of the part or combination of parts to be made. Unnecessary accuracy which does not improve the product merely increases the manufacturing cost, and, hence, is sheer waste. After the tolerances have been established, the means for insuring that the desired tolerances are adhered to in the machining operations must be considered. The gages to be used must be so designed and made that they are not only accurate, but practicable, and adapted to shop use. The relation between the gaging system and the design of jigs and fixtures is also essential. This book deals with such fundamental and vital points as have been outlined above, and is, therefore, regarded as a valuable addition to the technical literature of the day. Much has been published on manufacturing practice, but comparatively little on the design and making of gages; yet, gages control the different manufacturing processes and insure that the required degree of interchangeability is obtained. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Multiple Manometer and Piston Gages for Precision Measurements Note - Since the parts are to some extent interchangeable, the gages will be identified in this paper by giving the identification mark of the piston, cylinder, and base in the order named; for example, 3 - B - 30213. The 10-bar gage is illustrated partly in section in Figures 4 and 5; it is practically the same as the 100-bar gage with the exception of its larger piston and cylinder and slightly larger oil pump. A scale of centimeters is given along with the drawings to show the size of the gages. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Foundations of Mechanical Accuracy

Download or read book Foundations of Mechanical Accuracy written by Wayne and published by . This book was released on 1971-05-15 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his introduction to this book, George R. Harrison, Dean Emeritus of M.I.T.'s School of Science, writes as follows: "Basic to man's behavior is his ability to determine, modify, and adapt to his environment. This he has been able to do in proportion to his skill at making measurements, and fundamental to all other measuring operations is his ability to determine locations in the material world. Thus the science of mechanical measurements is a fundamental one. It is this science, and the art which accompanies and informs it, with which this book is concerned." This is the third book produced by the , Inc., of Bridgeport, Connecticut. Like all of its products, the book is marked by a clean precision of design and execution. The firm has built a worldwide reputation since 1924, both as a manufacturer of special tooling to extremely close accuracies and of machine tools that make possible a very high degree of precision. Wayne R. Moore has assembled in the 350 pages of Foundations of Mechanical Accuracythe company's intimate knowledge of and experience with mechanical accuracy, and how to achieve it. He has illustrated his text with over 500 original photographs and drawings. This book tells how to attain precision in manufacturing to millionths of an inch and how to control such precision by appropriate measuring techniques. The book is divided into four main sections: geometry, standards of length, dividing the circle, and roundness. A fifth section covers "Universal Measuring Machine Techniques and Applications." The book is printed in two colors throughout, and interspersed with full-page, full-color plates.

Book excerpt: Small town. Big secrets. Welcome to Sweet Ridge. Grayson Cooper is livid when he learns his father left him a keychain with a strawberry charm rather than ownership of the successful Guac Ole company. He’s been groomed for this position since he escaped the factory floor as a teen and joined Jack in the corporate offices. But what good is the CEO title without the stock shares? College dropout Becca Nash is dumbfounded to learn that she now owns controlling voting stock in the company where she’s just a line supervisor. The pay bump will help her take care of her mother’s nursing home care, but the corporate halls intimidate her–and who wants to hobnob with those snobs anyhow? Stymied at every turn by her attitude, Grayson tries to steal back those shares, but surprisingly loses his heart to Becca instead. What he does discover is a secret that could blow apart not only Becca’s world but his whole family. With so much hanging in the balance, Grayson must decide whether it’s better to follow his head or his heart.
