Download or read book Who You Might Be written by Leigh N. Gallagher and published by Henry Holt and Company. This book was released on 2022-06-21 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Dazzling...Who You Might Be is a brilliant, splintery coming-of-age novel that perfectly captures the nervous thrum of adolescence and the unnerving fragility of adulthood. Gallagher is so acutely attuned to the lies (and secrets) we tell (and keep from) ourselves and others. It puts me in mind of Emma Cline and Rachel Kushner.”—Award-winning author Peter Ho Davies A fiercely original and propulsive debut novel about the unexpected turns in life that ultimately determine who we become. It’s the late nineties—the dawn of the internet—and Judy and Meghan have lied to their mothers and run away for the weekend, to see a girl they’ve met in a chat room. Meanwhile, twelve-year-old Cassie, desperately clinging to childhood hopes, travels deep into the Nevada desert to reunite with her real mother at a strange and isolated compound. And, across the country, Caleb, an entitled teenager, is miserable following his family’s move from upper-crust San Francisco to boring Ann Arbor—until, emboldened by privilege, his tours of blighted Detroit become graffiti-writing escapades, with his faithful little brother in tow. Each of these adventures derails in severe, alarming ways, only to resurface and collide two decades later in an unforgettable finale that explores the power—and limits—of the narratives that come to define us. Deftly written and peopled with precisely drawn, indelible characters pushed to great extremes, Leigh N. Gallagher's Who You Might Be considers the ramifications of life’s most trying encounters and the resilience it takes to determine for ourselves who we might be.

Book excerpt: This novel, set in 1963, recounts the story of Blair Fusco, an aspiring eighteen-year-old who wishes to become a successful hairstylist, and prove wrong those who regard him as queer, particularly his father. Perceived to be homosexual, and ridiculed for his effeminate characteristics, Blair struggles to find his personal and professional identity. A first foiled romance with a lesbian and several equivocal relationships with mature women, together with his initiation into a group of local mobsters, transform Fusco into a shrewd operator. After many adventures and vicissitudes, he becomes the prime suspect in the murder of his client/partner Robin Maxwell and her maid, Anne. Since Blair is the only suspect, and the police are unable to find the culprit, he is compelled to fight for his innocence. The young hairdresser pins his hopes on a few strands of hair found in one of the corpse's hands, which he believes came from a wig, and should hold a clue as to who murdered Robin. If Blair Fusco wants to exonerate himself and resolve the murders, he must find the culprit himself, unless he's willing to spend the rest of his days cutting hair in a penitentiary.

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Hair written by Victoria Sherrow and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2023-03-30 with total page 634 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This popular volume on the culture of hair through human history and around the globe has been updated and revised to include even more entries and current information. How we style our hair has the ability to shape the way others perceive us. For example, in 2017, the singer Macklemore denounced his hipster undercut hairstyle, a style that is associated with Hitler Youth and alt-right men, and in 2015, actress Rose McGowan shaved her head in order to take a stance against the traditional Hollywood sex symbol stereotype. This volume examines how hair-or lack thereof-can be an important symbol of gender, class, and culture around the world and through history. Hairstyles have come to represent cultural heritage and memory, and even political leanings, social beliefs, and identity. This second edition builds upon the original volume, updating all entries that have evolved over the last decade, such as by discussing hipster culture in the entries on beards and mustaches and recent medical breakthroughs in hair loss. New entries have been added that look at specific world regions, hair coverings, political symbolism behind certain styles, and other topics.

Download or read book Accounting and Business Valuation Methods written by Malcolm Howard and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2007-11-14 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended to appeal to junior accountants and entrepreneurs who need guidance and practical analytical tools to enable them to develop business plans, raise capital and assess risk. Readers can initiate their own business plans by copying over 200 lines of formulae that create a 5 year plan that includes an earnings statement (or profit and loss account), balance sheet and cash flow statement. It will also appeal to students taking accounting and finance modules that cover basic accounting techniques, ratio analysis, investment appraisal, as well as company valuation and share valuation. The book demonstrates with four case studies where practice often differs with theory.Chapter 1 covers basic book-keeping, showing how accounts are reconciled and controlled covering topics such as the working capital cycle and negotiating techniques. Chapter 2 deals with basic business planning and how to use ratio analysis (performance, asset management, structure, and investment ratios) to assess company performance. Chapter 3 explains that published accounts are based on a series of judgements and the effect the relatively new international financial reporting standards and legislation such as the Sarbanes-Oxley Act is having on corporate governance. Chapter 4 covers risk assessment and valuing companies. Four case studies bring everything together; how investment trusts are valued, the effect of restructuring on share prices, the difference between serious profit warnings and mere compliance with regulation and hostile takeovers. Via a thorough analysis of published accounts this book will show readers how to: distinguish between mandatory and optional reports; assess the strength of a company's balance sheet; assess the risk factors associated with investment; assess whether or not the market value of a particular company is justified.* examines the difference between mandatory and optional reports* explains how to assess the strength of a companys balance sheet* looks at how to assess whether or not the market value of a particular company is justified
