Book Future Carrier Vs Super Carrier

Download or read book Future Carrier Vs Super Carrier written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New technologies and emerging issues such as the Joint Strike Fighter and the shift to a littoral navy threaten the future of the super carrier. Since the carrier's inception, heated arguments have been waged as to the size and capabilities of future carriers. This paper explores whether the era of the super carrier--a large aircraft carrier that is superior in size, capability and status--is coming to a close by examining the United States' need for large carriers. An examination of the development of the carrier, threats, costs, emerging technology and capabilities will show that future carriers will remain large despite affordability. The carrier has evolved to support the air wing. Aircraft have provided the major source for change to the carrier. Successful development of Short Takeoff and Vertical Landing (STOVL) aircraft will expand the capabilities of the air wing and require new capabilities from the carrier. Conventional Takeoff and Landing (CTOL) aircraft have perpetuated the legacy of the super carrier. Integrated air wings of STOVL and CTOL aircraft will allow interoperability between Joint forces and coalition forces. Emerging technologies such as electro mechanical aircraft launching system (EMALS), unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) and unmanned combat aerial vehicles (UCAV) will enable cost reductions in manpower and modify hull design. Measuring the total operating costs (TOC) will make estimating budgets for the new carriers more efficient and help achieve long-term goals by making it easier to remain on budget avoiding cost overruns. While other naval powers operate with smaller carriers, the U.S. is the only naval power that has the capacity and resources to operate super carriers. The capability of the carrier and its air wing are the key issues that must be addressed when discussing the next super carrier.

Book Billy Mitchell s War with the Navy

Download or read book Billy Mitchell s War with the Navy written by Thomas Wildenberg and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2014-02-15 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Billy Mitchell returned from WWI, he brought with him the deep-seated belief that air power had made navies obsolete. However, in the years following WWI, the U.S. Congress was far more interested in disarmament and isolationist policies than in funding national defense. For the military services this meant lean budgets and skeleton operating forces. Billy Mitchell’s War with the Navy recounts the intense political struggle between the Army and Navy air arms for the limited resources needed to define and establish the role of aviation within their respective services in the period between the two world wars. After Congress rejected the concept of a unified air service in 1920, Mitchell and his supporters turned on the Navy, seeking to substitute the Air Service as the nation's first line of defense. While Mitchell proved that aircraft could sink a battleship with the bombing of the Ostfriesland in 1921, he was unable to convince the General Staff of the Army, the General Board of the Navy, the Secretary of War, the Secretary of the Navy, or Congress of the need for an independent air force. When Mitchell turned to the pen to discredit the Navy, he was convicted by his own words and actions in a court-martial that captivated the nation, and was forced to resign in 1925. Rather than ending the rivalry for air power, Mitchell’s resignation set the stage for the ongoing dispute between the two services in the years immediately before WWII. After Mitchell’s resignation, the rivalry for air power between the two services resurfaced when the Navy's plans to procure torpedo planes for the defense of Pearl Harbor and Coco Solo were brought to the attention of the Army. The book concludes with a description of the events surrounding the Air Corps' abysmal performance at Pearl Harbor and Midway followed by a critical assessment of how the development of aviation was pursued by the Army and the Navy after WWII.

Book The Imperial Japanese Navy in the Pacific War

Download or read book The Imperial Japanese Navy in the Pacific War written by Mark Stille and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-11-20 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An highly illustrated examination of the key ships, tactics and operations of the Imperial Japanese Navy in the War in the Pacific in World War II. The Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) was the third most powerful navy in the world at the start of World War II, and came to dominate the Pacific in the early months of the war. This was a remarkable turnaround for a navy that only began to modernize in 1868, although defeats inflicted on the Russians and Chinese in successive wars at the turn of the century gave a sense of the threat the IJN was to pose. Bringing together for the first time material previously published in Osprey series books, and with the addition of new writing making use of the most recent research, this book details the Japanese ships which fought in the Pacific and examines the principles on which they were designed, how they were armed, when and where they were deployed and how effective they were in battle. The Imperial Japanese Navy in the Pacific War provides a history of the IJN's deployment and engagements, analysis of the evolution of strategy and tactics, and finally addresses the question of whether it truly was a modern navy, fully prepared for the rigors of combat in the Pacific. Illustrated throughout with photographs and detailed colour artworks, this is a valuable reference source for Pacific War enthusiasts and historians alike.

Book Which Came First Aircraft Or the Aircraft Carrier

Download or read book Which Came First Aircraft Or the Aircraft Carrier written by Craig A. Smith and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The US Navy's Next Generation Aircraft Carrier Program (CVNX) is currently in the early elements of design and the first of the class is scheduled for delivery in 2013. Each ship of the design is expected to have a service life of over 50 years. Current requirements definition processes for the aviation functions tie ship's performance parameters to past, current and near future airframes yet the class will fly multiple generations of aircraft during its expected life span. Are there requirements definitions strategies that will enable less costly upgrade paths for the class than those currently implemented? We examine, from a historical perspective, the traditional upgrade process that aircraft carriers have taken and propose alternative methods based on a different perspective applied while defining "requirements."

Book British Aircraft Carriers

Download or read book British Aircraft Carriers written by David Hobbs and published by Seaforth Publishing. This book was released on 2014-09-30 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a meticulously detailed history of British aircraft-carrying ships from the earliest experimental vessels to the Queen Elizabeth class, currently under construction and the largest ships ever built for the Royal Navy. Individual chapters cover the design and construction of each class, with full technical details, and there are extensive summaries of every ship's career. Apart from the obvious large-deck carriers, the book also includes seaplane carriers, escort carriers and MAC ships, the maintenance ships built on carrier hulls, unbuilt projects, and the modern LPH. It concludes with a look at the future of naval aviation, while numerous appendices summarise related subjects like naval aircraft, recognition markings and the circumstances surrounding the loss of every British carrier. As befits such an important reference work, it is heavily illustrated with a magnificent gallery of photos and plans, including the first publication of original plans in full colour, one on a magnificent gatefold.??Written by the leading historian of British carrier aviation, himself a retired Fleet Air Arm pilot, it displays the authority of a lifetime's research combined with a practical understanding of the issues surrounding the design and operation of aircraft carriers. As such British Aircraft Carriers is certain to become the standard work on the subject.

Book Future Carrier and Joint Combat Aircraft Programmes

Download or read book Future Carrier and Joint Combat Aircraft Programmes written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Defence Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2005-12-21 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ministry of Defence plans to replace the Royal Navy's current strength of three aircraft carriers with two larger, more versatile carriers capable of carrying a more powerful force, including new aircraft to replace the Harrier. This report analyses the progress of the Future Carrier and related Joint Combat Aircraft programmes. There is a serious risk that the two carriers will not enter service in 2012 and 2015 as planned, due to delays in investment decision-making. The novel 'Alliance' between MoD and three commercial companies has not yet been finalised. Delays are already impacting UK shipyards, and threatening jobs and the survival of the yards. The Joint Strike Fighter, a US-led programme, is the aircraft of choice for the new carriers, but there are unresolved weight problems. The target In-Service Date has been put back from 2012 to 2014, so it is possible that the new carrier would be operational (in 2012) before the new aircraft is available. There must be adequate assurances that the UK will have access to all the relevant technology (the 'Sovereign Capability') to enable maintenance and upgrading of new aircraft. Otherwise, the UK should consider withdrawing from the Fighter programme.

Book Nuclear Weapons and Aircraft Carriers

Download or read book Nuclear Weapons and Aircraft Carriers written by Jerry Miller and published by Smithsonian Institution Scholarly Press. This book was released on 2001-04-17 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the advent of the atomic bomb in 1945 and its impact on strategic thinking, the future of naval aviation looked bleak. Rapid demobilization after the war eliminated many carriers, and most policy makers believed that future wars would be fought with nuclear weapons delivered by land-based aircraft. In Nuclear Weapons and Aircraft Carriers, Jerry Miller traces the struggle of respected naval leaders to promote a different vision and the innovations in the design and engineering of carriers and aircraft that resulted. He argues that the Navy's hard-won nuclear capability played a significant role in ending the Cold War.

Book Leveraging America s Aircraft Carrier Capabilities

Download or read book Leveraging America s Aircraft Carrier Capabilities written by John Gordon and published by Rand Corporation. This book was released on 2006 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the United States seeks ways to stretch its defense dollars, pursue the Global War on Terrorism, and meet other national-security challenges, it is highly likely that policymakers will increase their reliance on aircraft carriers, using them more often and in more situations than they have in the past, especially if the vessels have the additional capabilities to respond appropriately. The current and expected use of aircraft carriers led the United States Navy in fall 2004 to commission RAND to explore new and nontraditional ways that the United States might be able to employ aircraft carriers in pursuit of traditional and emerging military and homeland defense missions. Over six months, RAND created and convened two Concept Options Groups (COGs)-small groups of experienced military and civilian experts, defense analysts, and potential users who work together to identify promising ways to employ military might in nontraditional ways-to explore possible nontraditional roles for aircraft carriers. One COG explored and identified new ways that aircraft carriers could be used in combat operations; the second COG examined ways that the vessels could be used in noncombat, homeland security missions or to help the nation recover from terrorist attacks or natural disasters in U.S. territories. Among the combat recommendations to come from the COG insights are that abilities need to be enhanced to reconfigure carrier air wings; among noncombat recommendations are that the availability of nonready carriers to respond to unforeseen crises needs to be improved. This monograph summarizes the activities, findings, and recommendations of both carrier COGs. It should be of special interest to the Navy and to uniformed and civilian decisionmakers with responsibilities related to naval and carrier operations, maritime domain awareness, or homeland security.
