Book An Interlaboratory Evaluation of the 1980 Version of the National Bureau of Standards Test Method for Assessing the Acute Inhalation Toxicity of Combustion Products

Download or read book An Interlaboratory Evaluation of the 1980 Version of the National Bureau of Standards Test Method for Assessing the Acute Inhalation Toxicity of Combustion Products written by Maya Paabo and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seven laboratories selected from academia, industry, and government evaluated the 1980 version of the NBS test method for assessing the toxicity of combustion products to determine the operability of the procedure and the reproducibility of results across laboratories. The experimental design specified that each laboratory was responsible for testing Douglas fir and three other materials from a total of twelve natural and synthetic materials. All laboratories were required to use similar exposure and combustion systems, to measure the autoignition temperatures of their materials, to determine the toxicity of the gaseous products released by the materials under both flaming and non-flaming conditions, to monitor chamber environmental conditions (temperatures, and oxygen, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide concentrations), and to measure blood carboxyhemoglobin in the test animals (rats). In addition, a few laboratories measured hydrogen cyanide generated from nitrogen-containing materials. Toxicity was evaluated on the basis of incapacitation (hind-leg flexion behavioral avoidance response) during the 30 minute exposure and of lethality during the exposure and 14 day post-exposure observation period. The results of this interlaboratory evaluation were statistically analyzed and, in most cases, demonstrated reproducible results across laboratories. Possible reasons for any inconsistencies are discussed. Sensitive experimental factors are identified and modifications to the test method which resulted from the experimental data collected during the interlaboratory evaluation are described.

Book Toxicity of Plastics and Rubber in Fire

Download or read book Toxicity of Plastics and Rubber in Fire written by P. J. Fardell and published by iSmithers Rapra Publishing. This book was released on 1993 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report does not seek to single out synthetic polymers as a special case. It aims to provide an overview of the whole subject of combustion toxicity and threat to life, whilst supplying specific information on the most frequently encountered polymeric materials, and combustion products such as dioxins which have received high levels of media attention. An additional indexed section containing several hundred abstracts from the Rapra Polymer Library database provides useful references for further reading.

Book excerpt: Combustion toxicology is a recent, applied science, the ultimate purpose of which is to reduce casualties from smoke inhalation. The present volume attempts an unbiased presentation of the state of the field. The authors have identified the misconceptions and unsupported conclusions in the literature, differentiating between fact and hypothesis and present the reader with an account of what is really known about the toxicity of smoke produced by materials. They also recommend an approach to evaluating the toxicity of combustion products.

Book Flammability Handbook for Plastics Fifth Edition

Download or read book Flammability Handbook for Plastics Fifth Edition written by Carlos J. Hilado and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1998-05-11 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FROM THE INTRODUCTION "Considerable effort has gone into the study of various aspects of flammability and of various plastic materials, so that these materials which are proving so useful to man will always be used in ways which will not compromise his safety. The task is a continuing one, because the family of plastics continues to grow, and, along with it, its variety of applications. Some of these future applications cannot even be conceived of at the present time. The needs of man and his society are changing, and with them the factors that affect his safety, comfort, and convenience. A flammability handbook for plastics must necessarily involve a variety of sciences and technologies spread across the whole spectrum of human knowledge, and it is impossible to discuss all the subjects in great depth. Any details extracted for attention are brought because they are believed to be significant to the overall effort to make plastics as useful and safe as humanly possible."
