Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Around the middle of the 19th century, so called 'antler furniture' was often found in Alpine hunting lodges. These 'trophies' made from hunted animals are seen today as an aberration of rustic conviviality. In modern settings animal materials have also been used ranging from classics of modern interior design from the 1920s that use animal fur as upholstery to ironic antler furniture pastiches from the 1980s, and the application of animal materials for furniture-like objects in contemporary art and design. 'The field of zoology has long supplied the arts and crafts sector with a plethora of sundry materials. The numerous antlers and horns are to be mentioned primarily in this context, which do not merely fill all of the hunting lodges and other houses belonging to keen huntsman but are also to be encountered in the homes of people who have never held a rifle, and at best know how to carve a haunch of venison with the necessary respect.' (Gustav Pazaurek, Good and Bad Taste in Arts and Crafts, 1912)

Book Austere Luminosity of Chinese Classical Furniture

Download or read book Austere Luminosity of Chinese Classical Furniture written by Sarah Handler and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-12-22 with total page 727 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chinese classical furniture is esteemed throughout the world for its beauty, functionalism, and influence on contemporary design aesthetics. Sarah Handler's stunningly illustrated volume traces Chinese hardwood furniture from its earliest origins in the Shang dynasty (c. 1500 to c. 1050 B.C.) to the present. She offers a fascinating and poetic view of Chinese furniture as functional sculpture, a fine art alongside the other Chinese arts of calligraphy, architecture, painting, and literature. Handler, a widely respected scholar of Chinese furniture, uses her knowledge of Chinese social, political, and economic history to provide a backdrop for understanding the many nuances of this art form. Drawing on literary and visual evidence from excavated materials, written texts, paintings, prints, and engravings, she discusses how people lived, their notions of hierarchy, and their perceptions of space. Her descriptions of historical developments, such as the shift from mats to chairs, evoke the psychological and sociological ramifications. The invention of a distinctive way to support and contain people and things within the household is one of China's singular contributions, says Handler. With more than three hundred exquisite illustrations, many in color, Handler's comprehensive study reveals "the magical totality of Chinese classical furniture, from its rich surfaces and shrewd proportions down to the austere soul of art that resides in the hardwood interiors." Austere Luminosity recognizes Chinese classical furniture as one of China's premier arts, unique in the furniture traditions of the world.

Book The Trophy Kids Grow Up

Download or read book The Trophy Kids Grow Up written by Ron Alsop and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-10-13 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first wave of the Millennial Generation—born between 1980 and 2001—is entering the work force, and employers are facing some of the biggest management challenges they’ve ever encountered. They are trying to integrate the most demanding and most coddled generation in history into a workplace shaped by the driven baby-boom generation. Like them or not, the millennials are America future work force. They are actually a larger group than the boomers—92 million vs. 78 million. The millennials are truly trophy kids, the pride and joy of their parents who remain closely connected even as their children head off to college and enter the work force. Millennials are a complex generation, with some conflicting characteristics. Although they’re hard working and achievement oriented, most millennials don’t excel at leadership and independent problem solving. They want the freedom and flexibility of a virtual office, but they also want rules and responsibilities to be spelled out explicitly. “It’s all about me,” might seem to be the mantra of this demanding bunch of young people, yet they also tend to be very civic-minded and philanthropic. This book will let readers meet the millennials and learn how this remarkable generation promises to stir up the workplace and perhaps the world. It provides a rich portrait of the millennials, told through the eyes of millennials themselves and from the perspectives of their parents, educators, psychologists, recruiters, and corporate managers. Clearly, the millennials represent a new breed of student, worker, and global citizen, and this book explores in depth their most salient attributes, particularly as they are playing out in the workplace. It also describes how companies are changing tactics to recruit millennials in the Internet age and looks at some of this generation’s dream jobs.
