Nesbitt, Mr. Emil Brass, Mr. J. D. Whelpley and others. Messrs. Henry and Ernest Poland, of P. R. Poland Sons, London, England, courteously revised a number of tables of statistics, in addition to providing considerable new material. Mr. R. H. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fur Trade of America Is fur trading founded on cruelty? For the past few years, there has been a campaign waged in the United States, which almost charges any one wearing a piece of fur with murder. When that question is asked me, I feel like answering by asking another set of questions - Is child birth cruel? Is any type of birth for animals or humans painless? Should we abolish all birth and strive for the Nirvana of Nothingness because all birth is attended with even greater pain than death? Should we cease to fight for right and award honor to the heroes of war, because the triumph of right must necessarily entail death to those who fight for wrong? But I do not hurl back this bombardment of counter questions; for I realize they are founded on misconceptions; and I love the creatures of the wilds - feathered and furred - with a passion that has taken me to the open every year of my life and keeps me to-day by preference a resident of the country rather than a denizen of the town. As a girl, I learned to shoot. As a woman, I have never fired a shot at a wild creature, except in the air to scare husky dogs away from molesting the ham and bacon stored in our camp kit; and if I hadn't, they would have eaten our boots. The people, who have accused the fur trade of being founded on cruelty, I notice eat game birds and ham and bacon and roast beef and fresh lamb; but that inconsistency apart, let us face the question without any side issues or inconsistencies - Is fur trading founded on cruelty? And I answer unhesitatingly - It is not. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Fur Farming in the Province of Quebec

Download or read book Fur Farming in the Province of Quebec written by Edward Thomas Davies Chambers and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fur Farming in the Province of Quebec: Describing the Most Approved Methods of Propagating Foxes and Other Fur-Bearing Animals in Captivity In selecting the location of a farm or ranch for fox farming, it is desirable to avoid limited quarters in or near a city or town, or even in a. Small village where foxes might be disturbed by visitors, for in such cases they become restless and suspicious and do not breed well. Foxes require very little space and sometimes thrive in enclosures pet more than forty feet square. Some have been successfully raised in stables or other small buildings, but the fur only attains its richest, thickest and most valu able qualities when the animal is kept out-of-doo-rs, and when kind nature furnishes the necessary de gree of warmth in the superior quality of the fur. The enclosures may be but a few yards from a farm-house, or even if visitors are excluded, in a quiet place on the outskirts of a village. A total space of 5 acres is ample for extensiveoperations, and it is not likely that more than 2 acres will be needed for any except a large and long established business. A half acre will accommo date about 6 pairs of foxes, which is quite as many as. A beginner should attempt to handle. The selec tion of ground may depend upon circumstances, but effort should be made to include a few trees or small shrubs. These afford shade and a feeling of seclusion and security to the animals, but should not be high enough or near enough to the fence to enable the foxes to jump from them out of the en closure. Perfectly open ground 'has been used with fair success, and in other cases yards have been situated in thick woods. Neither extreme is to be desired, but many trees are better than none at all. Forthe sake of cleanliness, sandy sod should be selected wherever possible. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Fox Ranching in Canada Classic Reprint

Download or read book Fox Ranching in Canada Classic Reprint written by Joel Asaph Allen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-02-03 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fox Ranching in Canada Fox-farming is the direct outgrowth of the early attempts of Canadian trappers to hold over foxes, captured out of season, until the animal became full-furred. Experiments conducted in the provinces of Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, Quebec and Ontario resulted in fixing the type of the valuable black or silver fox, which is a Sport Of the common red fox. The new industry of fox-farming followed as a natural sequence. Although a few foxes have been kept in confinement in Canada for a great number Of years the expansion of the fox industry did not really begin until 1910. Before this time fox raising was a secret pursuit in which only a few were allowed to participate. The knowledge that the men already engaged in the enterprise were making handsome profits from the sale of the pelts of foxes which they were raising gradually leaked out, and a scramble to get possession of foundation stock became a veritable craz'e. Book Maintenance of the Fur Supply Classic Reprint

Download or read book Maintenance of the Fur Supply Classic Reprint written by Ned Dearborn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Maintenance of the Fur Supply Directly or indirectly, fur contributes to the support or comfort of a large proportion of our population. We import as much fur as we produce. In other words, we could sell at home twice as much fur as we are now producing - not to speak of the foreign demand. The greater part of the fur grown in the United States comes from privately owned land. Landowners can increase and improve the fur taken on their property and make of it a regular source of income. A few species of fur-bearing animals have been domesticated, but with the single exception of the silver fox, none are being farmed extensively enough to influence the fur market. Laws protecting fur bearers are helpful; at present, however, they are not preventing the animals from decreasing in number. There would be better fur and, in the long run, more of it if the open season were not more than two months long. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Farm Weeds of Canada The first edition Of Farm Weeds of Canada was distributed free to public libraries, universities, colleges, high schools, rural schools, agri cultural societies and farmers' institutes and clubs. It was distributed with a view to make it conveniently available for the pur pose of reference, to all who are interested in agricultural pursuits but particularly to farmers and pupils Of schools in farming districts. The second edition has been prepared and published to meet the urgent requests from individuals who desire the book for their personal use. The information presented in the text is useful because the illustrations Of weeds and weed seeds make it intelligible to farmers and others who are not expert in the nomenclature of plants. The expense entailed in the preparation, printing and binding of seventy six coloured plates as contained in this volume precludes it from the list of those publications Of the Department Of Agriculture that are distributed generally and free Of charge. The nominal price fixed for its sale will restrict its distribution to those who will preserve and make proper use of it, and will meet a part Of the unusual expense incurred in its issue. This book was released on 2017-11-08 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agricultural Education and Research in Canada Though agriculture is not a science in the same sense that chem istry, biology and physics are sciences. There is in a very real and vital sense a'science of agriculture in which the basic sciences l have named and others are-called upon to contribute towards the solution of problems affecting farming and to establish the truth: which must furnish the foundation necessary for the rational coriact and develop ment of the art, To elaborate this thought somewhat: it is evident. In the first place. That agriculture is a vocation or occupation whereby men earn a livelihood and in which they till the soil. Sow and harvest crops, feed and raise livestock. It is an art or craft, therefore. Requiring skill and experience in manipulation for its successful prosecution. It is obvious that above all the farmer is a director of agencies (for he himself creates nothing). Agencies which involve the life of the soil. The life of. Plants. The life of animals. He ought to know how these agencies may best be directed and controlled From this view. And I believe it is the c'orrect one. The science of agriculture. As supplying the basis for all this work, is y largely a subdivision of our latest development in pure chemistry, bio-chemistry; i say largely, _ for it is not exclusively bio-chemistry; physics. Meteorology, economics and other sciences mast be called upon in the attempt to establish the truth and to mark the way for further progress in the art of farm mg. Book To Canada and Through It With the British Association Classic Reprint

Download or read book To Canada and Through It With the British Association Classic Reprint written by John Prince Sheldon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-22 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from To Canada, and Through It, With the British Association A competition that is interesting and important in a high degree is going on between the farmers of the Old Country and those of the New and it naturally involves fiscal problems which affect already, and in the future will much more alfect, the condition of agriculture in both countries. Of the modern and more striking features of this rivalry our fathers had no conception whatever, nor had we a decade and a half ago but with the older ones we had been familiar for some time before, though even now we do not apprehend the full scope of the influence which they will exert in the future. That the competition will become keener on the part of the new country, as well as greater in volume, is clearly enough seen but we cannot foretell the lines on which it will be de ve10ped, or the surprises that may be in store. In this age. Of steam and electricity, and of multifari ous inventions, new and unlooked-for factors are being brought into play, and these involve the adoption of various modifications in farming practices. The twin principles of progress and adaption are at work to-day in agriculture as they have not aforetime been, and nothing, even in agriculture, is so inevitable as the unforeseen. Of this, a striking instance is seen in the transatlantic trade in fresh meat, so recently developed, and not less so in that of live animals. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Suggestions as to Instruction in Farming in Canada and the North-West, and the United States of America, and Tasmania The leading principle of the system we have originated is to make the young men self-supporting from the first, and in this way the self-reliance so necessary to success in a new country can best be acquired. To send them out without the imposed obligation to work and to earn honest payment for their services would not lead to habits of industry, and to that practical acquaintance with every part of the business without which they could not safely be hereafter trusted with farms of their own; and the farmer himself would not have such control over them as would ensure his being able to teach them properly. The farmers selected to receive young men are chie y Position of those cultivating from 160 to 600 acres as mixed grain and stock farms, which are the size and description most general in the States 1' and as' it would probably be on farms of this acreage that the majority of those going out would commence for themselves, it is unquestionably better for them to gain. Their experience in this manner than on larger farms; those, however, who desire to learn on larger farms, and can after wards command the capital necessary to start and carry' them on, can be suitably placed for that purpose, though the: advice 111 all cases is that they should commence in the. Smaller way. We quote the following from the tenth Census of the: United States for 1880, Vol. III. Xxviii. The fees on entering a homestead amount to about 3, and absolute title is given after proof of five years' residence and cultivation each year of some por tion. A capital of 100 would be sufficient to enable a young Englishman to commence in a small way for himself. It may be observed, however, that my Americans start successfully with even smaller amounts.
