Book excerpt: Fleeing a toxic marriage and a job that's killing him, Finn winds up in the forgotten seaside town of Carrickbar. It's winter and, like Finn, the country is frozen and in crisis. All the old certainties have been blown away, and America has gone mad. Things don't look good for anyone, least of all him. But then he meets Hermione Watts, owner of the Sea View Cafe, a woman with an eye for suffering and a heart ever ready to heal. If anyone can fix things, she can. But then there's Helena, Queen of Carrickbar, a beautiful, foul-mouthed Georgian émigré, displaced by civil war, still carrying a bullet in her back. She sees something in Finn as well, though for the life of her she can't tell what, only that she wants it. Except she'd never really waste a body like hers on a man like that. Would she? Instead, she plays matchmaker to Hermione and Finn, before deciding it's Hermione she wants. And Finn? Well, maybe he'd be better as an already amicably divorced ex-husband, so skipping the messy middle bit. It sounds mad, but then what's normal about the times they're living in? Anyway, she's played longer odds than that in the past and come out on top, so who's to say she can't pull this one off as well? A quirky love story, a story of middle-aged orphans washing up in a forgotten, washed up part of the world, building their own families from scratch by stitching together unfamiliar boundaries. But when living through extraordinary times, when all the simple solutions have been tried and found wanting, maybe you've got to throw away the old rules and embrace the impossible if you want a chance at happiness in a world so suddenly tipped upside down.

Download or read book No Baloney written by Frank Maloney and published by Random House. This book was released on 2012-02-24 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the streets of Peckham to the neon-lit strip of Las Vegas, Frank Maloney's life has been a roller-coaster ride that even he finds hard to believe at times. The Cockney-born son of Irish parents, who once harboured thoughts of becoming a priest, instead went on to manage Lennox Lewis for 12 years and help him become the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world. In No Baloney, Frank lifts the lid on the world of big-time boxing and its household names, and gives a remarkable account of his time with Lewis, revealing stories and offering opinions that can only come from a true insider. He also gives an insight into the way money, sex, drugs, politics, bribery and corruption have played their part in the sport. But Maloney's story is not just about boxing. It is also about one of life's characters, whose colourful story is told with a brand of humour and emotion that makes it compelling reading. Before settling on a career in boxing, he tried his hand at being a jockey, street trader, chef, pub landlord, cab driver and greengrocer. Along the way there have been girls, fights, a murder investigation and a broken marriage, but through it all there has also been a determination to succeed against the odds. Once dubbed a 'Mental Midget' and 'Pugilistic Pygmy' by Don King, Frank Maloney has gone on to have the last laugh over the flamboyant American promoter and over those who believed he would fail. For, above all, No Baloney is the story of a man who has been lucky enough to experience the kind of life he could not have imagined in his wildest dreams all those years ago in south-east London - and Maloney has made sure he's lived it to the full.
Download or read book Soft Spaces in Europe written by Phil Allmendinger and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-05-01 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past thirty years have seen a proliferation of new forms of territorial governance that have come to co-exist with, and complement, formal territorial spaces of government. These governance experiments have resulted in the creation of soft spaces, new geographies with blurred boundaries that eschew existing political-territorial boundaries of elected tiers of government. The emergence of new, non-statutory or informal spaces can be found at multiple levels across Europe, in a variety of circumstances, and with diverse aims and rationales. This book moves beyond theory to examine the practice of soft spaces. It employs an empirical approach to better understand the various practices and rationalities of soft spaces and how they manifest themselves in different planning contexts. By looking at the effects of new forms of spatial governance and the role of spatial planning in North-western Europe, this book analyses discursive changes in planning policies in selected metropolitan areas and cross-border regions. The result is an exploration of how these processes influence the emergence of soft spaces, governance arrangements and the role of statutory planning in different contexts. This book provides a deeper understanding of space and place, territorial governance and network governance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a uniquely witty work through stories, jokes poking fun at people's names, anagrams, bizarrely funny non-sense, jokes and double entendres indicating comic genius. McDermott shows an ability to build his work around small stimulus levels to create punch lines that show extraordinary creativity and imagination. One can't get the impression that the author is making all of his work up as he goes along in a magician-like manner which often concludes in a hysterical fashion and adds to the comical element of the material.
