Book excerpt: Fungi of Cameroon is a contribution towards assessing the current macrofungal diversity associated with the ecosystems of Cameroon's southern forests, and evaluates the impact of deforestation and slash-and-burn on fungal communities and tracks the occurrence and changes to the fungal communities through the seasonal climatic variations (rainfall). The overall recorded species were new to the Mbalmayo forest reserve, while 75 of the described species were new to Cameroon, and eleven new mycobiota were described, plus one combination. The greatest fungal diversity was observed in forest stands, declining towards fallows and cropland. A distinct reduction of the diversity of wood and litter-dependent fungal species can be observed where land conversion takes place which is a definite threat to fungal species. As expected, seasonal variations fundamentally influence and govern the fruition and composition of the fungal communities studied.

Book excerpt: Mount Cameroon is found in the South West Region of Cameroon and is diverse with macrofungi species which have socio-economic functions as food and medicine, and also play essential roles in ecosystem functioning such as in decomposition and forming mycorrhizae association. Inhabitants of this region depend on the forest for their livelihood. This study was carried out for 2 years to assess the threats to macrofungi conservation in the mount Cameroon Region and provide solutions to the communities for mitigation. Interviews, questionnaires and focus group discussions were carried out in ten communities living around the Mount Cameroon forest reserves. The major reasons accounted for threats to macrofungi were habitat degradation due to landslides and volcanic eruptions, climate change, over harvesting of some edible and medicinal mushrooms, deforestation for farmlands by the locals and oil palm cultivation by multinational companies, settlement expansion due to urbanization and fire outbreaks by the local communities around Mount Cameroon region. It was found that, though there are laws and policies on biodiversity conservation in Cameroon, these laws are not being implemented with regards to fungi conservation and this can expose fungi to the risk of extinction. Solutions proposed and carried out for mitigation were implementation of in situ conservation methods, cultivation of the over harvested species on local substrates with the communities and planting of fast growing leguminous trees for multipurpose usage to limit deforestation. The government was encouraged to enact and implement laws regarding the conservation of fungi.

Examples of necrotrophic parasites of insects are discussed, not only for biological control potential, but also as organisms with population structure and complex multipartite interactions; a beneficial role for symptomless endophytes in broad-leafed plants is proposed; biotrophic fungal parasites with reduced morphologies are placed among relatives using phylogenetic methods; complex methods of fungal spore dispersal include interactions with one or more arthropods; the farming behavior of New World attine ants is compared with that of humans and the Old World fungus-growing termites; certain mycophagous insects use fungi as a sole nutritional resource; and other insects obtain nutritional supplements from yeasts. Insects involved in fungal associations include--but are not limited to--members of the Coleoptera, Diptera, Homoptera, Hymenoptera, and Isoptera. The fungi involved in interactions with insects may be clustered taxonomically, as is the case for Ascomycetes in the Hypocreales (e.g., Beauveria, Metarhizium, Fusarium), ambrosia fungi in the genera ophiostoma and ceratocystis and their asexual relatives, Laboulbeniomycetes, Saccharomycetes, and the more basal Microsporidia. Other groups, however, have only occasional members (e.g., mushrooms cultivated by attine ants and termites) in such associations. The chapters included in this volume constitute a modern crash course in the study of insect-fungus associations.
