Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Affirms, validates, and reiterates the yearning for an orderly, peaceful and just world The old adage “One picture is worth ten thousand words” is definitely true for Faces of Freedom Summer. There are simply not enough words to describe the period in our history that is recorded by the pictures in this book. As this book afirms, the resurgence of overt activities by hate groups—both the old traditional ones (e.g., the Ku Klux Klan) and the new ones (e.g., the Skin Heads)—however much the hard work and sacrifices of the modern civil rights movement humanized American society, much still remains to be done. The modern civil rights movement associated with the 1960s was not in vain, yet it did not eradicate from our society the evils of racism and sexism. While we activists made the United States more of an open society than it has ever been in its history, our vision and desire for the beloved community did not reach into all sectors of American society. “Freedom,” it has been said, “is a constant struggle, a work of eternal vigilance.” Faces of Freedom Summer brings to life that there was such a time and there were such people and, if such a people were once, then they are still among us. Yet, they may only become aware of themselves when they are confronted with visible evidence, such as the evidence contained in the pictures of Herbert Randall.

Book Big Data in Education Pedagogy and Research

Download or read book Big Data in Education Pedagogy and Research written by Theodosia Prodromou and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-10-04 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses how Big Data could be implemented in educational settings and research, using empirical data and suggesting both best practices and areas in which to invest future research and development. It also explores: 1) the use of learning analytics to improve learning and teaching; 2) the opportunities and challenges of learning analytics in education. As Big Data becomes a common part of the fabric of our world, education and research are challenged to use this data to improve educational and research systems, and also are tasked with teaching coming generations to deal with Big Data both effectively and ethically. The Big Data era is changing the data landscape for statistical analysis, the ways in which data is captured and presented, and the necessary level of statistical literacy to analyse and interpret data for future decision making. The advent of Big Data accentuates the need to enable citizens to develop statistical skills, thinking and reasoning needed for representing, integrating and exploring complex information. This book offers guidance to researchers who are seeking suitable topics to explore. It presents research into the skills needed by data practitioners (data analysts, data managers, statisticians, and data consumers, academics), and provides insights into the statistical skills, thinking and reasoning needed by educators and researchers in the future to work with Big Data. This book serves as a concise reference for policymakers, who must make critical decisions regarding funding and applications.

Book The Mississippi River Festival

Download or read book The Mississippi River Festival written by Amanda Bahr-Evola and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2006-11-29 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1969, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville initiated a remarkable performing arts series called the Mississippi River Festival. Over 12 summer seasons, between 1969 and 1980, the festival presented 353 events showcasing performers in a variety of musical genres, including classical, chamber, vocal, ragtime, blues, folk, bluegrass, barbershop, country, and rock, as well as dance and theater. During those years, more than one million visitors flocked to the spacious Gyo Obata-designed campus in the countryside near St. Louis. The Mississippi River Festival began as a partnership promoting regional cooperation in the realm of the performing arts. Southern Illinois University Edwardsville invited the St. Louis Symphony to establish residence on campus and to offer a summer season. To host the symphony, the university created an outdoor concert venue within a natural amphitheater by installing a large circus tent, a stage and acoustic shell, and a sophisticated sound system. To appeal to the widest possible audience, the university included contemporary popular musicians in the series. The audacity of the undertaking, the charm of the venue, the popularity of the artists, the excellence of the performances, and the nostalgic memory of warm summer evenings have combined to endow the festival with legendary status among those who attended.

Book History of the United States Since 1877

Download or read book History of the United States Since 1877 written by Bruce Solheim and published by Cognella Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Education of Henry Adams meets On the Road in Making History: A Personal Approach to Modern American History. This unique text takes a personal approach to American history. It gets readers excited about their own roles in making history and empowers them to make changes for the betterment of their country. Making History begins with the important point that while most standard textbooks refer to events that have shaped America, these events didn't happen to America - they happened to individual Americans. It is individuals who give their lives in armed conflicts and lose their homes during financial downturns. With this perspective in mind, students are prepared to read and think differently about post-Civil War history, including industrialization, the Spanish-American War and World Wars, the Depression, the Cold War, the Civil Rights Era, Vietnam, the rise of modern conservatism, and the country's current state of decline. With its non-traditional take on events and their impacts, Making History is a fresh alternative for survey courses in American history and historiography or classes in American civilization.
