Download or read book Solar System Ices written by B. Schmitt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 819 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Predicted long ago to be present on the surface of planetary bodies by theoreticians and recently shown by interplanetary spacecraft and ground- based instruments to be ubiquitous in the Solar System, ices in a broad sense have become an extremely important subject in planetary research. Ices found on objects formed in the remote parts of the Solar System contain a message about the composition and mode of formation of our planetary system. There are also objects that contain icy materials that bear signatures of past events on a geological timescale. Their study is one of the best means of inquiring about the origins, accessing the past and anticipating the future of our Solar System. The reviews in this book collect together a series of papers covering the physics and chemistry of ices, as well as the geology of icy surfaces. They present an extensive summary of their chemical and physical properties relevant to planetary astronomy. They also provide an overview of planetary bodies that contain ices and the outstanding problems of the field. Audience: The book is intended to become a reference for researchers and graduate students. It is accessible to senior graduate students with a background in planetary science.

Book Materials Science with Ion Beams

Download or read book Materials Science with Ion Beams written by Harry Bernas and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-10-03 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Materials science is the prime example of an interdisciplinary science. It - compasses the ?elds of physics, chemistry, material science, electrical en- neering, chemical engineering and other disciplines. Success has been o- standing. World-class accomplishments in materials have been recognized by NobelprizesinPhysicsandChemistryandgivenrisetoentirelynewtechno- gies. Materials science advances have underpinned the technology revolution that has driven societal changes for the last ?fty years. Obviouslytheendisnotinsight!Futuretechnology-basedproblemsd- inatethecurrentscene.Highonthelistarecontrolandconservationofenergy and environment, water purity and availability, and propagating the inf- mation revolution. All fall in the technology domain. In every case proposed solutions begin with new forms of materials, materials processing or new arti?cial material structures. Scientists seek new forms of photovoltaics with greater e?ciency and lower cost. Water purity may be solved through surface control, which promises new desalination processes at lower energy and lower cost. Revolutionary concepts to extend the information revolution reside in controlling the “spin” of electrons or enabling quantum states as in quantum computing. Ion-beam experts make substantial contributions to all of these burgeoning sciences.

Book Large Ions

    Book Details:
  • Author : Tomas Baer
  • Publisher : John Wiley & Sons
  • Release : 1996
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 208 pages

Download or read book Large Ions written by Tomas Baer and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1996 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent advances in both experimental techniques and theoretical methodologies have meant that increasingly sophisticated studies concerning the formation, structures, energetics and reaction dynamics of state- or energy-selected molecular ions can now be performed. In order to better serve the ion chemistry and physics community, each volume of this series is dedicated to reviewing a specific topic, emphasizing new experimental and theoretical developments in the study of ions. The Wiley Series in Ion Chemistry and Physics will help stimulate new research directions and point to future opportunities in the field of ion chemistry and physics. This volume, the sixth in the series, concentrates on the area of large ions. The production, detection and analysis of large ions are areas which have taken on great importance in recent years, in particular in the biomedical and biochemical fields. The understanding of large ions presents unique and formidable challenges which are very different from those associated with the study of small ions. This volume focuses on some of the fundamental chemistry and physics associated with the behavior of large ions, with the contributors addressing the issues in a quantitative fashion, in order to elucidate clearly some of the key recent advances which have taken place. As such, Large Ions: Their Vaporization, Detection and Structural Analysis provides an excellent snapshot of current research in this fascinating and important area. The six chapters are written by some of the leading experts in the field, and together they will be of great interest to experts and newcomers, both of whom will benefit from the in-depth discussion of the latest methods and results.

Book Ion Beam Modification of Materials

Download or read book Ion Beam Modification of Materials written by J.S. Williams and published by Newnes. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 1157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This conference consisted of 15 oral sessions, including three plenary papers covering areas of general interest, 22 specialist invited papers and 51 contributed presentations as well as three poster sessions. There were several scientific highlights covering a diverse spectrum of materials and ion beam processing methods. These included a wide range of conventional and novel applications such as: optical displays and opto-electronics, motor vehicle and tooling parts, coatings tailored for desired properties, studies of fundamental defect properties, the production of novel (often buried) compounds, and treating biomedical materials. The study of nanocrystals produced by ion implantation in a range of host matrices, particularly for opto-electronics applications, was one especially new and exciting development. Despite several decades of study, major progress was reported at the conference in understanding defect evolution in semiconductors and the role of defects in transient impurity diffusion. The use of implantation to tune or isolate optical devices and in forming optically active centres and waveguides in semiconductors, polymers and oxide ceramics was a major focus of several presentations at the conference. The formation of hard coatings by ion assisted deposition or direct implantation was also an area which showed much recent progress. Ion beam techniques had also developed apace, particularly those based on plasma immersion ion implantation or alternative techniques for large area surface treatment. Finally, the use of ion beams for the direct treatment of cancerous tissue was a particularly novel and interesting application of ion beams.

Book Physical Processes of the Interaction of Fusion Plasmas with Solids

Download or read book Physical Processes of the Interaction of Fusion Plasmas with Solids written by Wolfgang O. Hofer and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent development of large fusion devices achieving near energy break-even scientifically proves the viability of fusion as an energy source. The challenge now facing fusion researchers is surmounting engineering obstacles to make fusion energy practical. Physical Processes of the Interaction of Fusion Plasmas with Solids discusses problems associated with plasma-surface interactions which represent a key issue in achieving engineering as opposed to scientific success. Unlike previous books on the subject, this text is directly related to the broad range of plasma-surface interactions problems encountered in fusion devices. Physical Processes of the Interaction of Fusion Plasmas with Solids provides the specialized international fusion community with a resource that covers the interesting new developments that have occurred with the advent of the larger fusion plasmadevices that have demonstrated near break-even energy. This book addresses problems that are useful for design and fabrication of such devices.
