Book excerpt: This book deals with the issue of fundamental limitations in filtering and control system design. This issue lies at the very heart of feedback theory since it reveals what is achievable, and conversely what is not achievable, in feedback systems. The subject has a rich history beginning with the seminal work of Bode during the 1940's and as subsequently published in his well-known book Feedback Amplifier Design (Van Nostrand, 1945). An interesting fact is that, although Bode's book is now fifty years old, it is still extensively quoted. This is supported by a science citation count which remains comparable with the best contemporary texts on control theory. Interpretations of Bode's results in the context of control system design were provided by Horowitz in the 1960's. For example, it has been shown that, for single-input single-output stable open-loop systems having rela tive degree greater than one, the integral of the logarithmic sensitivity with respect to frequency is zero. This result implies, among other things, that a reduction in sensitivity in one frequency band is necessarily accompa nied by an increase of sensitivity in other frequency bands. Although the original results were restricted to open-loop stable systems, they have been subsequently extended to open-loop unstable systems and systems having nonminimum phase zeros.

Therefore one might not envision a coherent conference encom passing all these areas. However, such an event did take place June 22-26, 1995, at an international symposium held at Stanford University to celebrate Professor Thomas Kailath's sixtieth birthday and to honor the notable con tributions made by him and his students and associates. The depth of these contributions was evident from the participation of so many leading figures in each of these fields. Over the five days of the meeting, there were about 200 at tendees, from eighteen countries, more than twenty government and industrial organizations, and various engineering, mathematics and statistics faculties at nearly 50 different academic institutions. They came not only to celebrate but also to learn and to ponder the threads and the connections that Professor Kailath has discovered and woven among so many apparently disparate areas. The organizers received many comments about the richness of the occasion. A distinguished academic wrote of the conference being "the single most rewarding professional event of my life. Yet the cen tenary of the discovery, by the third Lord Rayleigh, that elastic waves can be guided by a surface, is memorable for the contradictions which it encompasses: Rayleigh's assessment of his classic 1885 paper as a rather minor mathematical development with a potential value only in seismology on the one hand; on the other the rediscovery of the subject in a totally that of electronic signal processing - which has led to its different fiel- explosive growth over the last twenty years. The new surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices have proved to be per electronic components. Today almost all television receivers con vasive tain one or more SAW filters, sophisticated radars depend on SAW signal processing, and SAW devices have been incorporated in ultra-high perfor mance opto-electronic systems. With the objective of surveying these developments and attempting to predict those that can be foreseen, as well as marking the centenary of Lord Rayleigh's discovery, The Rank Prize Funds' Committee for Opto Electronics organised a symposium in London, in July 1985. It was held in the Royal Institution, London, where Rayleigh himself once worked and often lectured.
