The book attempts to analyze the basic approaches to understanding of solid-solid and solid - gas combustion presented in contemporary literature in a unified approach based on classical combustion theory.

Book Combustion in High Speed Flows

Download or read book Combustion in High Speed Flows written by John Buckmaster and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 639 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the Workshop on Com bustion, sponsored by the Institute for Computer Applications in Science and Engineering (ICASE) and the NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC). It was held on October 12-14, 1992, and was the sec ond workshop in the series on the subject. The first was held in 1989, and its proceedings were published by Springer-Verlag under the title "Major Research Topics in Combustion," edited by M. Y. Hussaini, A. Kumar, and R. G. Voigt. The focus of the second workshop was directed towards the development, analysis, and application of basic models in high speed propulsion of particular interest to NASA. The exploration of a dual approach combining asymptotic and numerical methods for the analysis of the models was particularly encouraged. The objectives of this workshop were i) the genesis of models that would capture or reflect the basic pllysical phenomena in SCRAMJETs and/or oblique detonation-wave engines (ODWE), and ii) the stimulation of a greater interaction between NASA exper imental research community and the academic community. The lead paper by D. Bushnell on the status and issues of high speed propulsion relevant to both the SCRAMJET and the ODWE parallels his keynote address which set the stage of the workshop. Following the lead paper were five technical sessions with titles and chairs: Experiments (C. Rogers), Reacting Free Shear Layers (C. E. Grosch), Detonations (A. K. Kapila), Ignition and Struc ture (J. Buckmaster), and Unsteady Behaviour ('1'. L. Jackson).

Book An Investigation of the Combustion Process in Solid Fuel Ramjets

Download or read book An Investigation of the Combustion Process in Solid Fuel Ramjets written by and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation was conducted into four areas of the solid fuel ramjet combustion process: (1) the effects of near-wall turbulent mixing and equivalence ratio on combustion efficiency, (2) the effects of bypass air on combustion efficiency, (3) the combustion process in a cylindrically perforated fuel grain with a twin side-dump/dome configuration, and (4) the comparison of experimental radial temperature profiles to computer generated radial profiles. Polymethylmethacrylate fuel grains were burned in a ramjet motor and a thrust stand. Combustion efficiencies were determined and compared for different configurations. It was found to be insensitive to variations in the mixture ratio and to near-wall mixing. Bypass air was found to adversely affect the combustion efficiency both in stable and unstable combustion environments. The twin side-dump/dome configuration was unable to sustain combustion for all conditions investigated. Theoretical radial temperature profiles were found to have larger near wall gradients than were measured experimentally. (Author).

Book Investigation of Particle laden Turbulent Flow in Free Shear Turbulent Combustion

Download or read book Investigation of Particle laden Turbulent Flow in Free Shear Turbulent Combustion written by and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explicit numerical mixed phase simulations are described which couple random gasdynamic motions to inertiallly interactive gas borne particles. Theses simulations are numerical experiments intended to provide data for investigating the interaction between a developing turbulent free shear layer and gas borne solid particles it entrains. The simulations predict most probable distributions of dispersed phase trajectories, standard deviations, and gas phase mixing dynamics which include the concomitant back-influences of the particle phase on the carrier gas flow. Data for refinement of the computational scheme and physical verification are provided by experiment. The experimental evidence is developed in a splitter plate divided, two-channel free shear mixing combustion tube. A variety of particle concentrations and particle size distributions are admitted into non-combusting or combusting flows with selected heat release levels. The computations, in turn, provide guidance on design and selection of new experiments.

Book Theoretical and Experimental Performance of a Solid Fuel Ramjet Combustion Cycle for Hypersonic Flight Conditions

Download or read book Theoretical and Experimental Performance of a Solid Fuel Ramjet Combustion Cycle for Hypersonic Flight Conditions written by P. J. M. Elands and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A research program has been carried out to validate a numerical simulation of the flow and combustion process in the combustion chamber of a solid fuel ramjet with experimental results. Operating conditions were chosen to represent a sustained missile flight at Mach 4 at an altitude of 13 km. Experimental data were obtained by burning cylindrical fuel grains made of polyethylene and hydroxyl terminated polybutadiene in a solid fuel ramjet using a connected pipe facility. For numerical simulation a computer code was developed, describing rotational symmetric steady-state turbulent reacting flows through channels with and without a sudden expansion. Calculations were carried out using polyethylene as a fuel. For the validation emphasis was laid on the regression rate. The results show that the computer code predicts the mean regression rate with reasonable accuracy. The value for the effective heat of gasification is found to be very important. The experiments and the calculations carried out show the feasibility to apply a solid fuel ramjet for sustained hypersonic flight at these conditions.

Book Turbulence and Molecular Processes in Combustion

Download or read book Turbulence and Molecular Processes in Combustion written by Tadeo Takeno and published by Elsevier Publishing Company. This book was released on 1993 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An understanding of the intricacies in the turbulent combustion process may be a key to solving many of the current energy and environmental problems. The essential nature of turbulent combustion can be derived from the interaction between stochastic flow fluctuations and deterministic molecular processes, such as chemical reaction and transport processes. Undoubtedly, this is one of the most challenging fields of engineering science today, requiring as it does the interaction of scientists and engineers in the respective fields of chemical kinetics and fluid mechanics. The 28 papers in this volume review recent advances in these two disciplines providing new insights into the fundamental processes, addressing a great deal of recent progress. This progress ranges from descriptions of elementary chemical kinetics, to working those descriptions into combustion calculations with large numbers of elementary steps, to improved understanding of turbulent reacting flows and advances in simulations of turbulent combustion. The contributions will inspire further research on many fronts, advancing the understanding of combustion processes, as well as fostering a growing interdisciplinary cooperation.

Book Combustion Behavior of Solid Fuel Ramjets Vol II Effects of Fuel Properties and Fuel air Mixing on Combustion Efficiency

Download or read book Combustion Behavior of Solid Fuel Ramjets Vol II Effects of Fuel Properties and Fuel air Mixing on Combustion Efficiency written by Michael E. Metochianakis and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamental SFRJ fuel properties were determined using a DTA and a gas chromatograph for both high and low heating rates. The performance of these fuels was then measured under various operating conditions and test geometries. Fuel properties were found to have some effect on the obtainable combustion efficiency but much larger effects could be induced by the flow conditions (induced mixing near the fuel surface, bypass air, etc.).
