Book Measuring the Gains from Medical Research

Download or read book Measuring the Gains from Medical Research written by Kevin M. Murphy and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2010-04-15 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1998, health expenditures in the United States accounted for 12.9% of national income-the highest share of income devoted to health in the developed world. The United States also spends more on medical research than any other country-in 2000, the federal government dedicated $18.4 billion to it, compared with only $3.7 billion for the entire European Union. In this book, leading health economists ask whether we are getting our money's worth. From an economic perspective, they find, the answer is a resounding "yes": in fact, considering the extraordinary value of improvements to health, we may even be spending too little on medical research. The evidence these papers present and the conclusions they reach are both surprising and convincing: that growth in longevity since 1950 has been as valuable as growth in all other forms of consumption combined; that medical advances producing 10% reductions in mortality from cancer and heart disease alone would add roughly $10 trillion-a year's GDP-to the national wealth; or that the average new drug approved by the FDA yields benefits worth many times its cost of development. The papers in this book are packed with these and many other surprising revelations, their sophisticated analysis persuasively demonstrating the massive economic benefits we can gain from investments in medical research. For anyone concerned about the cost and the value of such research-from policy makers to health care professionals and economists-this will be a landmark book.

Book A Conflict of Self Interest

Download or read book A Conflict of Self Interest written by Adrian A. Hankey and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2016-08-02 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self or Soul is an essential energy centred in every living body and is about instinct, species survival and coexistence with all other Life. It is not a belief nor any part of Brain. Brain is the natural manager of the body in which Soul exists. The natural function of Brain is to facilitate Soul-purpose throughout Life. Brain copies or creates beliefs to make everything true or real, and with memory and logic it creates time, space, knowledge and world. Educated Brain tends to deny Self and so creates a greater need for entertainment, exploration, pets and more. Civilization is run entirely by Brains. But that complex process has yet to run for more than a few hundred years without final disaster. The only peoples who have survived for millenia, have done so by depending consistently upon Self, family, home, legend, lore, wisdom, and heritage, most of which are presently being civilly disrespected and ignored. No belief of science, psychology or religion can ever explain or replace any of these. On this finite planet, population increase has become too serious to ignore. Natural increase seems due mostly to cultural stress and ageing. But serious unnatural population increase is now due to religiously enforced non-birth-control amongst poor and ignorant people. Greedy corporations and developers also encourage population expansion which will ultimately cause the collapse of people-species. For survival of people-species, the current civil process must accept a more localized, traditional and cultural Wisdom, not based upon nor necessarily denying science or religion.

Book The Magnolia Story with Bonus Content

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This eBook includes the full text of the book plus an exclusive additional chapter from Chip and Joanna that is not found in the hardcover. An exclusive look at America's first family of renovation! Taking you behind the scenes, Chip and Joanna Gaines share the story of how they met, the ups and downs of being an entrepreneurial couple, and how they built a life they love. The Magnolia Story is the first book from dynamic husband-and-wife team Chip and Joanna Gaines, stars of HGTV’s Fixer Upper. Offering their fans a detailed look at their life together, they share everything from the very first renovation project they ever tackled together to the project that nearly cost them everything; from the childhood memories that shaped them, to the twists and turns that led them to the life they share on the farm today. While they both attended Baylor University in Waco, their paths didn’t cross until Chip checked his car into the local Firestone tire shop where Joanna worked behind the counter. Even back then Chip was a serial entrepreneur who, among other things, ran a lawn care company, sold fireworks, and flipped houses. Soon they were married and living in their first fixer upper. Four children and countless renovations later, Joanna garnered the attention of a television producer who noticed her work on a blog one day, leading to the incredible Fixer Upper phenomenon. In The Magnolia Story, fans will finally get to join the Gaines family behind the scenes and discover: The time Chip ran to the grocery store and forgot to take their new, sleeping baby Joanna’s agonizing decision to close her dream business to focus on raising their children When Chip buys a houseboat, sight-unseen, and it turns out to be a leaky wreck Harrowing stories of the financial ups and downs as an entrepreneurial couple Memories and photos from Chip and Jo’s wedding The significance of the word magnolia and why it permeates everything they do The way the couple pays the popularity of Fixer Upper forward, sharing the success with others, and bolstering the city of Waco along the way And yet there is still one lingering question for fans of the show: Is Chip really that funny? “Oh yeah,” says Joanna. “He was, and still is, my first fixer upper.”
