Download or read book Jesus Death in New Testament Thought Two Volume Complete Edition written by David A. Brondos and published by David A. Brondos. This book was released on 2018-07-16 with total page 721 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus’ Death in New Testament Thought is unlike anything written on the subject to date. It represents a radical break with the traditional models or “theories” of atonement based on ideas such as penal substitution, participation in Christ, and the Christus Victor motif, claiming that all of these ideas as commonly understood are foreign to New Testament thought. On the basis of his analysis of second-temple Jewish thought, Brondos demonstrates that, for Jews in antiquity, what atoned for sins and led people to be declared righteous in God’s sight was not sacrifice, suffering, or death in themselves, but the renewed commitment to living in accordance with God’s will which they manifested by means of their sacrificial offerings and at times their willingness to endure suffering and death out of faithfulness to that will. According to the thought of Jesus’ first followers, in accordance with a divine plan conceived of before the ages, in Jesus God had sent his Son in order to establish around him a community of people fully committed to practicing the love, justice, solidarity, and righteousness associated with God’s will for all. Jesus’ dedication to this task led to confrontation and conflict with the powers and authorities of his day, who sought to silence him by having him put to death. Because he stood firm and remained faithful to that task rather than backing down from it, he was crucified on a Roman cross. Paradoxically, however, in this way he laid the basis for the existence of the community God had desired from the start, stamping it forever as one to which no one could truly belong without assuming the same firm commitment to Jesus and everything for which he had lived and died. Those who form part of this community, living out of faith under Jesus as their risen Lord, come to practice God’s will as redefined through Jesus and on that basis are forgiven and accepted as righteous by God. Thus, by giving up his life out of love for others in faithfulness to the task his Father had given him, Jesus has attained the redemption, reconciliation, cleansing, and justification of those who now live under his lordship as members of the worldwide community of believers from all nations that God has established through him and his death, in fulfillment of the promises that God had made of old to his people Israel. In Volume 1, Brondos looks to the relevant texts from antiquity to trace the background and development of these ideas. His argument will leave the reader with no doubt that Jesus’ first followers understood the salvific significance of his death or blood in the manner just outlined, and therefore that the traditional interpretations of his death that have prevailed from patristic times to the present do not reflect faithfully their thought as we find it in the New Testament. In Volume 2, Brondos examines the formulaic allusions to Jesus’ death that we find scattered throughout the New Testament and other early Christian writings so as to demonstrate that these are precisely the ideas that lie behind those allusions. At the same time, through his analysis of the writings of Melito of Sardis and Irenaeus of Lyons, he provides clear evidence that, by the late second century, ideas that are foreign to those texts began to be read back into them, with the result that the original understandings of Jesus’ death that had developed among his first followers came to be replaced by other understandings that run contrary to their thought. In his Conclusion, Brondos argues that only by rejecting the traditional models of atonement and returning to the New Testament teaching on this central doctrine can the Christian church respond effectively to the crisis it faces today and bring about the restoration of the type of communities envisioned by Jesus and his first followers.

Download or read book Recreating Utopia in the Desert written by Hans A. Baer and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1988-01-01 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recreating Utopia in the Desert: A Sectarian Challenge to Modern Mormonism is the account of a millenarian sect, officially known as the Aaronic Order, one of the main splinter groups of the Mormon Church. Their story tells us much about the social tensions, particularly along class lines, that have emerged in Mormonism. The Aaronic Order, or Levites, emerged as the Mormon Church evolved from a religious utopia in the Midwest, to a near nation-state in the Intermountain West, to finally an international theocratic corporation. Drawing upon the concept of revitalization movements, the Levite sect is viewed as an attempt by working-class Mormons to resurrect the communitarian ideals they perceived as characteristic of earlier nineteenth-century Mormonism. From their beginnings in the Depression, the Levites have developed a series of cooperative and communal ventures in Utah, based upon the revelations of Maurice Glendenning. We see in the Levites the seemingly inevitable processes of institutionalization and fission characterizing revitalization movements that survive. By explaining the impetus for the development of sectarian groups such as the Levites, the author offers important insights for the discussion of religious communitarianism and schizmatic movements in contemporary religion.
Download or read book The Making of the Tabernacle and the Construction of Priestly Hegemony written by Nathan MacDonald and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-09-21 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did the Jerusalem high priests go from being cultic servants in the sixth century BCE to assuming political supremacy at some point during the third or second century? The Making of the Tabernacle and the Construction of Priestly Hegemony examines how the conditions were created for the priesthood's rise to power by examining the most important ideological texts for the high priests: the description of the wilderness tabernacle and the instructions for the ordination ritual found in the Biblical books of Exodus and Leviticus. Although neglected by many modern readers, who often find them technical and repetitive, the tabernacle accounts excited considerable interest amongst early scribes and readers, as is evidenced by the survival of them in no fewer than four versions. Untangling this intricate compositional history helps shed light on how these chapters in the Pentateuch shaped-and were shaped by-the perception of the priesthood's powers and competencies during the Persian and early Hellenistic periods. The hierarchy that is developed is more nuanced and multifaceted than previously appreciated, with Israelite artisans, community leaders, Levites and women incorporated into a complex vision of society. The ordination ritual was also transformed by scribal elites during the Persian period, appearing in no fewer than five variant forms as the role of the high priesthood and its relationship to other groups was negotiated. Using a broad, plural methodological approach that incorporates insights from sociology, ritual studies, textual and literary criticism, early interpretation, manuscript studies, and philology, Nathan MacDonald's study shines new light on the historical development, theology, and ideology of priestly texts in the Pentateuch.
Download or read book Preaching Christ from Leviticus written by Sidney Greidanus and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2021-03-11 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For pastors who take seriously the commitment to incorporate the entire Bible into their preaching, Sidney Greidanus’s books on preaching Christ from the major genres of the Old Testament have been a welcome gift. In his last such volume, Greidanus engages with the Old Testament genre of law and treats a book that is often seen as the most challenging of all: Leviticus. Preaching Christ from Leviticus reminds pastors and congregations that key christological themes—priesthood, sacrifice, atonement, holiness—first originated in Leviticus before they came to full flower in the New Testament with the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ and his call to holiness. Greidanus provides the basis for fully understanding these and other themes with an exacting analysis of Leviticus and then provides the foundations for ten sermons on Leviticus through topics such as the burnt offering, the ordained priesthood, the day of atonement, the sabbatical year, and the year of jubilee, as well as the commandments to be holy, to love your neighbor, and to love aliens and enemies.

Download or read book Vision of the Creator written by Marco Carbone and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2023-06-05 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Isaiah 2:4 “And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.” AKJV (Psalms 67:4). The Holy Bible is the most widely distributed, least understood book in the history of creation. Due to early understandings and handed down traditions of world renowned teachers, the Holy Bible was falsely interpreted in many areas (James 3:1-6). To this day, many of the past, incorrect teachings are still being upheld and taught (2 Peter 3:15-16). The spreading of misinformation, throughout the world, has failed the masses (Jeremiah 8:8-16, Matthew 7:24-27, Romans 2:24-25). Since the beginning of time, mankind has searched for the meaning and purpose of life, to gain understanding of the very purpose of existence (Acts 17:21-23). Knowing the true destiny of humanity enlightens the conscience in the way of true reality (Luke 11:34-36). Discovering the very origin and voyages of life, removes all non essential searching. Oneness with the origin of life, brings one to a place of true comfort and healing for the entire body (Proverbs 3:7-10, 22). Humanity is more than ever before seeking connectivity and oneness with alien spirits of higher dimensions, energies, forces of the earth, universe and realms beyond (Deuteronomy 4:19, 2 Chronicles 28:22-23, Daniel 12:4, Romans 1:25). The existence and condition of the creation before the earth was created, the realm beyond the universe, the fulfillment of the destiny that awaits mankind, causes of the human condition, are made known. Is GOD MALE AND FEMALE? etc. This book clearly and thoroughly brings out the revelent facts of such topics and much more (Jeremiah 33:2-3). This book, without leaving any doubts, reveals how to invoke and have proper communion with THE CREATOR, how THE CREATOR is blessing, saving, glorifying the Gentiles (Romans 3:29-30) and how GOD chooses HIS first fruits (Leviticus 27:32). Inspiration received is to provide true doctrine which leads to understanding (Luke 24:28-32), regarding matters such as transcendency through fire, the milllenial ages, the last days etc. Understanding numerical values, patterns and alignments etc, as written in the Holy Bible, unlocks essential information regarding the physical and spiritual purposes for life on earth, relationships between humanity and the unseen spirit, alien world, the generations, closing of the ages, the afterlife (John 18:36, Acts 1:9-11, Revelation 3:21). For the first time in history, many unknown mysteries of THE CREATOR, hidden from ages past, are made known (Isaiah 46:9-10, Ephesians 1:3-10). THE VISION OF THE CREATOR consists of the revealing of HIS very CHARACTER and works, through HIS creation (Psalm 22:19-25, Jonah 2:2-10). Proof of what the writings of the Holy Bible actually reveal, through the SPIRIT of the letters, is obtainable in this must read book (Matthew 23:34, Ephesians 3:1-9). Revelation 21:4 “And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.” AKJV (Psalm 22:27-31).
