Book excerpt: He was known around the world as the "Bubble Boy". Now told for the first time by the person who was his caretaker and confidant, Bursting the Bubble is the heart-rending story of the life and death of David Vetter. Due to the scientific zeal of doctors and religious authorities, and the compliance of his trusting family, he lived his life in a sterile chamber bereft of human touch from birth until a few days before his death at age 12 and a half. Mary Ada Murphy, Ph.D., was a child psychologist on staff at St. Luke's-Texas Children's Hospital throughout David Vetter's life and became his closest friend and confidant. She was with him when he died. She received the Hadassah Myrtle Wreath Award in 1985 in recognition of her outstanding achievement in the psychological support of David Vetter and his family. Raymond J. Lawrence, whom Murphy entrusted with the Bursting the Bubble manuscript and writes an introduction to it, was the hospital chaplain in place during David's early years, and who convened the only formal ethics consultation on the Vetter case.

Book excerpt: Neurons in the brain communicate with each other by transmitting sequences of electrical spikes or action potentials. One of the major challenges in neuroscience is to understand the basic physiological mechanisms underlying the complex spatiotemporal patterns of spiking activity observed during normal brain functioning, and to determine the origins of pathological dynamical states, such as epileptic seizures and Parkinsonian tremors. A second major challenge is to understand how the patterns of spiking activity provide a substrate for the encoding and transmission of information, that is, how do neurons compute with spikes? It is likely that an important element of both the dynamical and computational properties of neurons is that they can exhibit bursting, which is a relatively slow rhythmic alternation between an active phase of rapid spiking and a quiescent phase without spiking. This book provides a detailed overview of the current state-of-the-art in the mathematical and computational modelling of bursting, with contributions from many of the leading researchers in the field.

Book Fit to Burst Abundance Mayhem and the Joys of Motherhood

Download or read book Fit to Burst Abundance Mayhem and the Joys of Motherhood written by Rachel Jankovic and published by Canon Press & Book Service. This book was released on 2013-01-29 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fit to Burst is a book of parenting "field notes" written by a mom in the thick of it all. It is chock-full of humorous examples and fresh advice covering issues familiar to moms, such as guilt cycles, temptations to be ungrateful or bitter, enjoying your kids, and learning how to honor Jesus by giving even in the mundane stuff. But this book also addresses less familiar topics, including the impact moms have on the relationships between dads and kids, the importance of knowing when to laugh at kid-sized sin, and more. Fit to Burst will help us to be moms who parent with the story in mind rather than the snapshot, who know how to give much and to require much from their children in the everyday mayhem, and who understand the importance of biscuits. A note from Rachel: "I don't pull punches or hold back in this book, because I am writing to myself as much as to you. If something in this book strikes a little close to home for you, know that it struck in my home first. I am not writing about other people's problems, although I know many of them are common. I write about what I know, and what I know is the challenges, the joys, and the work involved in raising little people."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frank McKinney continues his international bestseller tradition of delivering contrarian perspectives and strategies for generational success in real estate. Tired of all the doom and gloom? Frank McKinney helps you wash away the worry—the anxiety financial theorists and misguided media constantly dump into the real-estate marketplace. During his twenty-five-year career, this 'real estate rock czar' (The Wall Street Journal) and undisputed 'king of the ready-made dream homes' (USA Today) has not only survived but thrived through all economic conditions by taking the contrarian position and making his own markets. Burst This! Frank McKinney's Bubble-Proof Real Estate Strategies clearly shows you how to prepare for and time the upswings while insulating your real estate investments from the inherent, inevitable corrective cycle. The truth is that opportunities to profit abound during every phase. Lots of people prosper in boom times, of course, but many set themselves up to make even bigger money during a crisis/correction. Why not do both, now? Investors of all experience levels learn to turn the bubble mentality inside out, transforming it into a protective force field and a crystal ball, allowing you to accurately forecast your real estate future. You will see how you can aspire not just to survival, but also to what McKinney calls "thrival," developing your ability to capitalize on market conditions. McKinney takes you on a factual real estate retrospective, a "post mortem" of the housing markets, beginning with the mid-seventies to today. By studying six distinct real estate cycles over the last thirty-five years, he sifts out critical, recurring trends that highlight significant opportunities while signaling you where history might repeat itself. You will see exactly how McKinney has successfully handled these predictable cycles with timeless financial and investment strategies. • Hear a resounding counter-opinion to the doomsayers and the get-rich-quick schemers who crawl out of the cesspool whenever the market's pendulum swings too far in one direction--and guard against falling into their traps. • Discover why the positive and negative excitement (a.k.a. greed and fear) associated with boom and bust times are your worst enemies, brought out by nothing more than recurring market cycles. • Get the evidentiary truth, not the fear-mongering or the sugar-coating, on real-estate's ups and downs. • Pinpoint the real-estate investments, and a proven approach to marketing them, that have consistently shown immunity to the market's volatile fluctuations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The barrel area is a unique specialization of the cerebral cortex, shared by many species of rodents and some marsupials, in which the somatotopic map of the body surface receives direct morphological expression. Here, the homogeneous sheet of layer IV granule cells seen in most mammals is fractured into large archipelagos, each representing one of the larger subdivisions of the contra lateral half-body. Within these larger domains are smaller aggregates of granule cells that contain the concentrated terminations of thalamocortical fibers bear ing messages emanating from constellations of receptors located in finer subdi visions of a body part. These smaller aggregates are particularly well-defined in the representation of the face, where they form a one-to-one representation of the sinus hairs or vibrissae and where they have been given the name barrels. The first inklings of the unique structure of the parietal cortex of rodents came in the study of Droogleever-Fortuyn (1914), who remarked on the pres ence in it of clouds of granule cells 0. 5-1 mm in diameter, which he thought were in some way associated with concentrations of nerve fibers. Little attention, however, was paid to his observations. Lorente de N 6 (1922) later observed dense focal concentrations of afferent fiber ramifications in Golgi preparations of the mouse cortex, calling them glomeruli, and these can now be seen as the structures that form the hearts of the barrels and around which the granule cells concentrate.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a result of a Symposium* organized by the Editors in October 1984 at San Diego. Almost all of the present and past investigators of the Crustacean Stomatogastric Nervous Systems participated. However, this book should not, by any means, be considered a sympo sium report. Its goal is to present not only the most recent results obtained with this system, but also a complete and comprehensive view of the con tributions made by this preparation to fundamental concepts in neurobiol ogy. This has been possible only with the cooperation of all of the investiga tors concerned and we must gratefully thank all of our colleagues who have agreed to let the authors of the chapters include some unpublished results. Short appendices have been added to several chapters to clarify some key points which are still unpublished or to illustrate briefly some recent promis ing new findings.
