Book Their Glory Shall Not be Blotted Out

Download or read book Their Glory Shall Not be Blotted Out written by Olaf MacLeod and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The outbreak of war in 1914 marked the disappearance of the colourful uniforms which had distinguished the regiments of the British Army for some three hundred years. The splendid full dress uniforms of the British Army, now so rarely seen, were a familiar sight prior to the Great War. Once, a soldier's unit or branch of the service could be recognised from his dress: the colour of his tunic, the shape of his head-dress, the presence or otherwise of characteristic embroidery, cords and chains. Today such knowledge is largely confined to individual enthusiasts. Through his meticulous and beautiful paintings, Lieutenant Colonel MacLeod has created a permanent record of the ceremony, grace and dignity of the last of the British Army's full dress, now only used in military tattoos and other ceremonial occasions.

Book excerpt: Charles Hamilton Smith's illustrations of soldiers of the British Army are a faithful and delightful record of how Wellington's troops were uniformed and equipped. Wellington's Army presents a collection of these sought after plates in a special, large format and provides a superb evocation of British military uniforms during the closing years of the Peninsular War and at the epic battle of Waterloo. The plates, drawn from life and completed in 1814, cover all the branches of service including line infantry; light infantry and rifles; heavy and light cavalry; general officers; foreign troops; artillery and engineers; and cadets and veterans. Each plate is accompanied by an incisive text by the leading expert on Wellington's troops - Philip Haythornthwaite - which discusses the unit in question, the uniform and its significant features. Wellington's Army also includes an extensive introduction analyzing the evolution of the British Army of the period and examining the colorful life of Charles Hamilton Smith.

Book Fashioning Regulation Regulating Fashion

Download or read book Fashioning Regulation Regulating Fashion written by Ben Townsend and published by Reason to Revolution. This book was released on 2021-04-15 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first part of a two-volume investigation into the clothing orders of the British late Georgian army, combined and contrasted with an analysis of fashion in the same army - comparing the regulated dress with the 'modes of the army' as revealed by contemporary writing and illustrations. The first quarter of the nineteenth century witnessed a refinement of fashionable masculine dress that has not since been surpassed. Military tailoring inspired a parallel flowering of uniform splendor that continued into the 1830s and sparked an enduring fascination with military costume that still rages today. The army that operated in these cumbersome uniforms managed to achieve fame as one of the most effective British fighting forces ever recognized, and is still remembered and honored for its achievements. These three strands: the flowering of late Georgian civilian tailoring; of its martial equivalent; and of military excellence on campaign, have gripped the interest and the imagination of the public, and are endlessly revived and recycled through popular culture, on television, film, through books and all of the other new media. The reader then might properly ask why another book on uniforms of this period is necessary. Quite simply, it is because the amount of material available to the researcher has increased exponentially since the advent of the internet, especially in regard to the now widely available digital archive files of institutional collections. The huge amount of accessible material makes the task of assembling accurate information much longer and much harder, but the results are consequentially more satisfying and accurate than hitherto.

Book The British Army of the Crimea

Download or read book The British Army of the Crimea written by J.B.R. Nicholson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-07-20 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British Army's involvement in the Crimean War of 1854-56 is often remembered only for the ill-advised 'charge of the Light Brigade' during the battle of Sevastopol as memorialized in Tennyson's poem. Nevertheless, the British Army, together with the French and Turkish armies, posed a formidable threat to Russia's expansionist ambitions. This book examines the uniforms of the various branches of the British Army involved in the conflict, including general officers and staff, artillery, infantry and the most colourful branch of all the cavalry. Numerous illustrations, including rare contemporary photographs depict the army's uniforms in vivid detail.
