Book Fuel Rich Solid Propellant Boron Combustion

Download or read book Fuel Rich Solid Propellant Boron Combustion written by M. K. King and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Single particle boron ignition and combustion models developed in earlier phases of this program have been utilized and extended to treatment of boron cloud ignition, oxidizer depletion effects on cloud combustion time, laminar flame speeds in boron dust clouds, agglomerate ignition, and the effects of halogens, lithium fluoride coatings, and metal coatings on particle ignition. In addition, they have been utilized in a modular combustor model (well-stirred reactor followed by a two-dimensional mixing zone) of boron slurry combustion. Critical deficiencies in knowledge of processes of condensation of various boron oxides/hydroxides have been defined and an experiment to better quantify and understand these processes has been designed. An experimental program for definition of kinetics of boron oxide liquid plus water vapor (important to boron particle ignition) has been carried out. A comprehensive data base of ignition and combustion times for small (10 to 50 micron) boron particles in various wet and dry environments has been developed and a limited experimental study of the effects of LiF coatings on boron ignition performed. Finally, experiments aimed at characterizing dominant processes is boron solid-fuel ramjet combustion, utilizing a windowed slab burner, have been accomplished. (Author).

Book Fuel Solid Propellant Boron Combustion

Download or read book Fuel Solid Propellant Boron Combustion written by Merrill K. King and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An apparatus for measurement of the permeability of oxygen gas through liquid boric oxide as a function to temperature was designed and built. Numerous difficulties were encountered in the course of this study, the most intractable being the uptake of oxygen by vessel wall materials at rates which swamped the rate of transport across the liquid boric oxide film separating vessels with differing initial oxygen levels, resulting in data with an unusably low signal-to-noise ration. A burner and two-dimensional nozzle device were designed (and the burner constructed) for study of condensation of boron oxides and hydroxides (all to boric oxide, with elimination of hydrogen and excess oxygen as required by stoichiometry consideration in the latter case) from dry and wet combustion atmospheres, with and without seeding with submicron refractory solid particles as heterogeneous nuclei. In addition, diagnostic procedures for uses in this condensation study (to be actually performed under a subsequent AFWAL/PORT contract) were selected from a wide array of potential candidates. A condensation model treating the flow of boron-loaded combustion product strams through a C-E nozzle with simultaneous treatment of finite-rate kinetics for gas-phase reactions and finite-rate nucleation and particle growth processes was developed. Several plausible modeling options as regards nucleation and particle growth processes were included in this analysis. Equation development, computer coding, and model check out were completed, and parametric studies with the model were initiated during the course of this program.

  • Pages : 217 pages

Download or read book Ignition written by John Drury Clark and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2018-05-23 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This newly reissued debut book in the Rutgers University Press Classics Imprint is the story of the search for a rocket propellant which could be trusted to take man into space. This search was a hazardous enterprise carried out by rival labs who worked against the known laws of nature, with no guarantee of success or safety. Acclaimed scientist and sci-fi author John Drury Clark writes with irreverent and eyewitness immediacy about the development of the explosive fuels strong enough to negate the relentless restraints of gravity. The resulting volume is as much a memoir as a work of history, sharing a behind-the-scenes view of an enterprise which eventually took men to the moon, missiles to the planets, and satellites to outer space. A classic work in the history of science, and described as “a good book on rocket stuff…that’s a really fun one” by SpaceX founder Elon Musk, readers will want to get their hands on this influential classic, available for the first time in decades.

Book High Pressure Boron Ignition and Combustion

Download or read book High Pressure Boron Ignition and Combustion written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The high potential energy release of boron makes it a prime candidate for a high enthalpy fuel or as a fuel additive to solid propellant formulations, as well as a prospective additive for tailoring energy release rates of explosive grains. The problem of long ignition delays at atmospheric and lower pressures, caused by a combination of factors which include the necessity to remove a combustion-retarding oxide layer from the particles, a high vaporization temperature for the pure boron substrate, and slow condensation kinetics, have generally precluded the use of boron for energetic fuel applications at these pressures. This report summarizes experiments which measure an order of magnitude shorter ignition delays than previously published 1 atm data, for pure and reduced oxygen and oxygen mixtures with water vapor and fluorine compounds (H, HF) over 8.5 to 34 atm and 2000 to 3000 K. Ignition delays in the 300 to 500 microsecond range are observed in a shock tube, decreasing with increasing temperature, and increasing twofold when oxygen concentrations are reduced to 5% in Ar. Fluorine, from dissociated 1% SF6 in O2, is seen to decrease ignition delays by a factor of 1.7 compared to pure oxygen. A combustion chamber is used at a peak pressure of 157 atm and temperature in excess of 2800 K to study ignition delays at higher pressures than are possible in the shock tube. Endwall emission spectra of BO2 are recorded for comparison with boron ignition models.
