Book The Dawn of Pro Stock

Download or read book The Dawn of Pro Stock written by Steve Reyes and published by Cartech. This book was released on 2013-01-18 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pro Stock is a unique class of racing, and one that has changed considerably over the years. In its early years, Pro Stock was similar to the Super Stock era from a decade before, in that it featured cars that seemed to be a lot like a hot rod version of what people were driving on the street. While the engines were a little bigger and nastier than most street versions, they were not that far removed, and fans could really relate to cars like 'Cudas, Mustangs, Camaros, Mavericks, and Vegas going at it on Sunday afternoon. These mostly stock-bodied cars were, after all, what most fans wanted their own street version to be. Over the years, as always seems to happen in racing, the original vision morphs into something completely different, and in the case of Pro Stock, that meant tube frames and flip-up fiberglass bodies that resemble nothing seen on the street. And in that, there becomes a little bit of a disconnect with the fans, whose interest in Pro Stock originated in the relative stock appearance of the cars. For this reason "The Dawn of Pro Stock" by Steve Reyes is a celebration of the early years, when fans could really connect with the cars, and brand rivalries were intense. Legendary drag racing photographer Reyes was trackside at the biggest and best NHRA events from the mid 1960s throughout the 1990s. He had a unique perspective on the development of Pro Stock, as he was able to document the evolution of both the cars and drivers as he observed them throughout the season. For a genuine insider's view, Steve has gotten together his very best shots and supplemented them with some great images from his contemporaries to offer this new collection. Steve's own observations punctuate the outstanding images to give the reader a trackside view of Pro Stock's early days unlike any offered before.

Download or read book Rough Air written by Kevin Donovan and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2009-09-10 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continuing the story of Alta Airlines, the corporation first introduced to readers in the novel AIRLINE, Rough Air opens with the macabre murder of a well respected chief executive in his office on a summer day in 2005. Maynard Brennan, the first CEO in the colorful history of Alta to come from outside the ranks, is a catalyst for dramatic change within the corporation. He cleans house, removing Altas incumbent executives, unaware that he is sowing the seeds of his own demise. Through the eyes of Caroline Woodson - a long-time flight attendant and Alta veteran - we follow Maynards progression to the top and the circumstances that lead to his murder, including the jockeying of his newly appointed leadership team: Rex Wright, a flamboyant and charismatic personality with a long airline pedigree; Bernice Anthony, a financial genius who is determined to become the first woman CEO of a major airline; and Trey Sperling, a young consulting wizard whose idea for an airline within an airline is given the green light to save the stodgy operation from further financial bleeding. At the moment of Maynards death, the story takes a leap backward, to the life of the founder, Marty Willman, and his shepherding of the airline through the turmoil of the jet age, the civil rights era in the south and Altas bold growth into a global airline. Marty maintains Altas humble family culture through the end of his reign, but it is a stark contrast to the present-day enterprise - one in which pay cuts and layoffs bankroll the bonuses of Altas elite executives. The story resumes with the investigation of the murder. Caroline, who has risen to a high-ranking position, is front and center as Altas ambitious leaders reveal themselves and the murderer among them at the climactic finale of the story.

Book Altered Visions

Download or read book Altered Visions written by L. J. Rennenkampf and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-09-21 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America has been a fortunate land, as Will Rogers noted. If we needed to build a house, there was all the wood at hand; if we wanted coal or iron, there was aplenty for the scratching, or if we sought oil, all we had to do was stick a pipe in the ground. But, as he said, we would find out how smart we were when all that came to an end. And that is what is happening. Nothing lasts forever except change, and denial that the future will be different is simply dysfunctional. There is Global Warming, pollution, and running out of resources, which will come to control us painfully if we will not face up to them. Altered Visions are not an option.

Book Southern California Funny Cars

Download or read book Southern California Funny Cars written by Steve Reyes and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2023-06-19 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southern California was the birthplace of organized drag racing, with the first organized race held at the Santa Ana airport in 1949 and the subsequent founding of the National Hot Rod Association in 1950. Over the next decade and a half, the dragster became the king of the quarter mile on Southern California drag strips. In 1964, veteran dragster owner/driver Jack Chrisman had an idea for something different to grace Southern California's drag strips. It was not a dragster but a stock-bodied race car using nitromethane for fuel in a supercharged engine. With the help of Gene Mooneyham, Mercury's Fran Hernandez, and sponsor Helen Sachs, Chrisman put together the world's first nitro-burning "funny car." It was a steel stock-bodied Mercury Cyclone with a supercharged 427 Ford engine running on pure nitromethane. Chrisman started the evolution that soon turned stock steel-bodied cars into fiberglass-bodied tube chassis funny cars. Southern California drag racers began to lead the way for racers all over the United States in the new funny car class.

Book Twentieth Century Humanist Critics

Download or read book Twentieth Century Humanist Critics written by William Calin and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Twentieth-Century Humanist Critics revisits the work and place of eight scholars roughly contemporary with Anglo-American New Criticism: Leo Spitzer, Ernst Robert Curtius, Erich Auerbach, Albert Béguin, Jean Rousset, C.S. Lewis, F.O. Matthiessen, and Northrop Frye. William Calin first considers the achievements of each critic, examining his methodology and basic presuppositions as well as the critiques marshalled against him. Calin explores their relation to history, to canon-formation, and to our current theoretical debates. He then goes on to show how all eight form a current in the history of criticism related to both humanism and modernism. Underscoring the international, cosmopolitian aspects of literary scholarship in the twentieth century, The Twentieth-Century Humanist Critics brings together humanist critical traditions from Europe, the United Kingdom, and North America and reveals the surprising extent to which, in various languages and academic systems, critics were posing similar questions and offering a gamut of similar responses.

Book Altered States

Download or read book Altered States written by Terry Neher and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-02 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quitting addiction to any substance, whether alcohol, cocaine, tranquilizers, heroin, tobacco, or one of the lesser known, is most frequently a very difficult process. Most of them are varied forms of the Alcoholics Anonymous "12 Step Program." Virtually all of them report at best 50% success and more commonly only 10% " sobriety one year from treatment. Dr. Neher has worked with several types of "treatment" programs and found that they lacked two important elements. He found that when they included these two in any of them, more than 90% maintained their sobriety after one year. It should be noted that tracking patients (or clients) longer is almost impossible to do on a regular basis. However, 95% of those few who had the benefit of the two elements and who have been able to be followed, maintained their sobriety for the next five or more years. This book covers these, two critical elements, in detail.
