Book The Varieties of Religious Experience

Download or read book The Varieties of Religious Experience written by William James and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2012-06-14 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'By their fruits ye shall know them, not by their roots.' The Varieties of Religious Experience (1902) is William James's classic survey of religious belief in its most personal, and often its most heterodox, aspects. Asking questions such as how we define evil to ourselves, the difference between a healthy and a divided mind, the value of saintly behaviour, and what animates and characterizes the mental landscape of sudden conversion, James's masterpiece stands at a unique moment in the relationship between belief and culture. Faith in institutional religion and dogmatic theology was fading away, and the search for an authentic religion rooted in personality and subjectivity was a project conducted as an urgent necessity. With psychological insight, philosophical rigour, and a determination not to jump to the conclusion that in tracing religion's mental causes we necessarily diminish its truth or value, in the Varieties James wrote a truly foundational text for modern belief. Matthew Bradley's wide-ranging new edition examines the ideas that continue to fuel modern debates on atheism and faith. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Download or read book Risale on the Fruit written by Bediuzzaman Said Nursi and published by Risale Press. This book was released on 2020-09-23 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The capital of life is very little and the work to be done is much. There are spheres like concentric circles for every person, from the sphere of their heart and stomach; the sphere of their body and home; the sphere of their suburb and town; the sphere of their country and nation; the sphere of the globe and humanity; up to the sphere of animate beings and the world, there are spheres one within the other. Each person may have duties in each of those spheres. But the greatest and the most important and permanent duty lies in the smallest sphere; while the least important and temporary duties may occasionally be found in the largest sphere. Using this analogy, the largest and smallest spheres are in inverse proportion to the pertaining duties.

V. 2007 This volume is presented as a tribute to the life and work of D. Z. Phillips. Six of the articles were originally presented at the annual conference on the philosophy of religion organized by Phillips and held at Claremont Graduate University, February 9–10, 2007. Unfortunately, Phillipsdidnotlivetoparticipateintheconferenceitself. HediedunexpectedlyJuly25,2006 in the library of his beloved University of Wales, Swansea. Sadly, this volume appears without the addition of his voice. Born in Morriston, near Swansea, Phillips was a Welsh speaker, a strong supporter of Welsh speaking schools and the author of many works in philosophy and literature in Welsh and English. Known widely as the leading representative of the movement in the philo- phy of religion called Wittgensteinianism, Phillips spent much of his effort challenging the tendency of philosophers to elevate one kind of discourse to the point where it becomes the norm by which other forms of discourse are to be judged.

Book Patterns of Belief

    Book Details:
  • Author : Eric Carlton
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2017-07-05
  • ISBN : 1351554832
  • Pages : 143 pages

Download or read book Patterns of Belief written by Eric Carlton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The principle purpose of Religious Education has traditionally been to instruct and inform, with discussion and questioning occupying a secondary position. This traditional approach gives overwhelming emphasis to the historical aspects of religion, and not only fails to put into perspective the issues raised by religion today, but also takes no account of the growing movement in schools towards learning by enquiry and questioning rather than by the accumulation of stated facts. This title, first published in 1973, explores the ways in which religion can be approached from a more sociological standpoint, and aims to encourage the reader to examine religion in a more objective manner. The wide-ranging and exploratory theme of this book makes it ideal for follow-up work and suggestions for further study are provided after each chapter. This title will be of interest to teachers and students of Religious Studies.

Book The Epistemology of Belief

Download or read book The Epistemology of Belief written by H. Vahid and published by Springer. This book was released on 2008-10-24 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a challenge to certain epistemic features of belief, resulting in a unified and coherent picture of the epistemology of belief. The author examines current ideas in a number of areas, beginning with the truth-directed nature of belief in the context of the so-called 'Moore's paradoxes'. He then investigates the sensitivity of beliefs to evidence by exploring how sensory experiences can confer justifications on the beliefs they give rise to, and provides an account of the basing relation problem. The consequences of these arguments are carefully considered, particularly the issues involving the problem of easy knowledge and warrant transmission. Finally, he focuses on the purported fallibility of beliefs and our knowledge of their contents, arguing that the fallible/infallible distinction is best understood in terms of externalist/internalist conceptions of knowledge, and that the thesis of content externalism does not threaten the privileged character of self-knowledge.

This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An illuminating guide for Christian living based on a compelling reading of the Bible. In his intricate book, Adams tries to answer a basic but compelling question for Christians: How can Christians act on their faith? Or, put another way: What must Christians do? The author's thesis-that intangible biblical notions like belief and trust can and should be translated into actionable practices-is a simple but valuable message for the religious...The author, educated at Princeton, has a knack for clearly explaining difficult theological principles, and though his prose demands careful attention, such attention delivers real insight. Further, his reading of the Bible-though traditional-is both sensitive and comprehensive. For Adams, Christian scripture is a unified story, and he handles the text like a veteran exegete. A penetrating and pragmatic interpretation of scripture." - Kirkus Discoveries
