Download or read book Fruit From the Jungle Classic Reprint written by M. D. Wood and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-08 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fruit From the Jungle Most of the chapters herein given are experiences from real mission life, and were intended for papers to be read by our young people in America; a few are the outlines of addresses given while on furlough. Some of them have appeared in missionary publica tions in the United States. As this matter accumulated, friends suggested the idea of printing the whole collection in book form. This I finally decided to do, hoping thus to bring these experiences before a larger number of young people, who might thereby obtain a clearer understanding of mission life among the heathen, and whose interest in this great work might thereby be increased. I have always felt that real mission life among the heathen is not so fully depicted to our youth in America as it should be; hence my plainness of speech in several instances. The refined conditions of society in the United States of America make it exceedingly difficult to explain properly real conditions in this field; but it is hoped that this little book will help to an understanding of the great need, and awaken among our young people a sympathy and soul burden for the depressed and lower classes in heathen lands. Book excerpt: Upton Sinclair wrote The Jungle after working undercover in Chicago's meatpacking district for seven weeks. His aim was to draw America's attention to the plight of exploited immigrant workers and usher in a new age of socialism. Indeed, the public was horrified, but not by workers' suffering. Rather, Sinclair's graphic descriptions of the industry's filthy conditions and use of diseased animals quickly led to passage of the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1908.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Second Jungle Book The stream is shrunk the pool is dry, And we be comrades, thou and I; With fevered jowl and dusty flank Each jostling each along the bank; And by one drouthy fear made still, Foregoing thought of quest or kill. Now neath his dam the fawn may see, The lean Pack-wolf as cowed as he, And the tall buck, unflinching, note The fangs that tore his fathers throat. The pools are shrunk-the streams are dry, And we be playmates, thou and I, Till yonder cloud-Good Hunting! loose The rain that breaks our Water Truce. He Law of the Jungle-which is by far the oldest law in the world-has arranged for almost every kind of accident that may befall the Jungle People, till now its code is as perfect as time and custom can make it. Book River and Jungle Classic Reprint

Download or read book River and Jungle Classic Reprint written by Edward S. Ellis and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-21 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from River and Jungle Ayuthia. The steamer soon sailed, and the slight voyage was made without mishap or ad venture. At the ancient capital two natives eagerly snatched the chance to carry the trunk through the jungle to the missionary station, more than content to receive their pay on the conclusion of their work. They had heard of the good man true, as they referred to the clergyman, and, slight as was the compensation, it was a windfall to the grinning natives, who chattering, and laughing in a jolly mood, set off almost at a run, taking turns in carrying the small trunk, which seemed to be no more than a feather's weight to the active, sinewy fellows. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jungle Days Malay States, or, as I once saw a magazine, half buried, like the pyramids, in Saharan sands, where it had slipped from the camel load of some un known traveller. I left my Kartabo laboratory one morning with my gun, headed for the old Dutch stelling. Hap pening to glance up I saw a mote, lit with the oblique rays of the morning sun. The mote drifted about in circles, which became spirals; the mote became a dot, then a spot, then an oblong, and down the heavens from unknown heights, with the whole of British Guiana spread out beneath him from which to choose, swept a vulture into my very path. We had a quintet, a small flock of our own vultures who came sifting down the sky, day after day, to the feasts of monkey bodies and wild pec caries which we spread for them. I knew all these by sight, from one peculiarity or another, for I was accustomed to watch them hour after hour, striving to learn something of that wonderful soar mg, of which all my many hours of flying had taught me nothing. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Beast in the Jungle What determined the speech that startled him in the course of their encounter scarcely matters, being probably but some words spoken by him self quite without intention spoken as they lingered and slowly moved together after their renewal of acquaintance. He had been conveyed by friends an hour or two before to the house at which she was staying; the party of visitors at the other house, of whom he was one, and thanks to whom it was his theory, as always, that he was lost in the crowd, had been invited over to luncheon. There had been after luncheon much dispersal, all in the interest of the original motive, a View of Weatherend itself and the fine things, intrinsic features, pictures, heirlooms, treasures of all the arts, that made the place almost famous and the great rooms were so numerous that guests could wander at their will, hang back from the principal group and in cases where they took such matters with the last seriousness give themselves up to mysterious appreciations and measurements.
