Book Factors Affecting Frost Damage to Clay Bricks

Download or read book Factors Affecting Frost Damage to Clay Bricks written by T. Ritchie and published by Division of Building Research, National Research Council. This book was released on 1968 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To study the effect on clay bricks of freezing and thawing them, a number of small samples were tested under several different freezing conditions. Most of the samples, had been used originally in other work, such as a study of the directional effect on moisture expansion of bricks, and when the original work was completed, additional tests were made to investigate the influence of various factors on the damage done to the bricks by freezing them. The samples were one inch square in cross section, the length (corresponding to the least dimension of a brick) was two and a quarter inches. Some of the samples were cut from manufactured bricks made by the stiff-mud method, while other samples were cut from similar dry, unfired bricks obtained from a brickworks. The latter w ere cut to suitable size and fired in a laboratory furnace. The end surfaces of the samples were ground flat, and measurements of length made with a dial gauge accurate to one ten-thousandth of an inch. The samples were frozen in a large cold chamber which operated at a temperature varying from -15 deg.F to -20 deg.F; after freezing, they were usually thawed in air at "room" temperature, approximately 72 deg.F, although in some tests the samples were thawed in water.
