Book Five Years a Cavalryman

Download or read book Five Years a Cavalryman written by H. H. McConnell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Five Years a Cavalryman: Or Sketches of Regular Army Life on the Texas Frontier, Twenty Odd Years Ago O apology is needed for these sketches, but a word regarding them may be in place. The last few years have witnessed an overwhelming flood of litera ture pertaining to the late war, but little, however, has ever been written illustrating phases of the life of the regular soldier on the frontier in times of peace. The author joined the regular army just after the close of the war, and during his term of service on the Texas frontier kept minutes of the scenes passing around him - more or less imperfect, perhaps, in the manner, but, to the best of his knowledge and belief, correct as to the matter - and as the section of country he became familiar with, has in the time elapsed since the sketches were written undergone a wonderful change-from the comparatively untracked wilderness of 1866, to the settled and progressive civilization of 1889 - it is hoped they will interest the old-timer who has been through it all, and who can look back in retrospect and vouch for the faithfulness of the de scriptions given; and also hoped that the newcomer as well, will read them with wondering interest at the development he finds here in contrast to the crude simplicity existing a few years since. Download or read book Peacekeepers and Conquerors written by Samuel J. Watson and published by University Press of Kansas. This book was released on 2013-04-23 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Jackson's Sword, Samuel Watson showed how the U.S. Army officer corps played a crucial role in stabilizing the frontiers of a rapidly expanding nation. In this sequel volume, he chronicles how the corps' responsibilities and leadership along the young nation's borders continued to grow. In the process, he shows, officers reflected an increasing commitment to professionalism, insulation from partisanship, and deference to civilian authority-all tempered in the forge of frustrating, politically complex operations and diplomacy along the nation's frontiers. Watson now focuses on the quarter-century between the Army's reduction in force in 1821 and the Mexican War. He examines a broad swath of military activity beginning with campaigns against southeastern Indians, notably the dispossession of the Creeks remaining in Georgia and Alabama from 1825 to 1834; the expropriation of the Cherokee between 1836 and 1838; and the Second Seminole War. He also explores peacekeeping on the Canadian border, which exploded in rebellion against British rule at the end of 1837, prompting British officials to applaud the U.S. Army for calming tensions and demonstrating its government's support for the international state system. He then follows the gradual extension of U.S. sovereignty in the Southwest through military operations west of the Missouri River and along the Louisiana-Texas border from 1821 to 1838 and through dragoon expeditions onto the central and southern Plains between 1834 and 1845. Throughout his account, Watson shows how military professionalism did not develop independent of civilian society, nor was it simply a matter of growing expertise in the art of conventional warfare. Indeed, the government trusted career army officers to serve as federal, international, and interethnic mediators, national law enforcers, and de facto intercultural and international peacekeepers. He also explores officers' attitudes toward Britain, Oregon, Texas, and Mexico to assess their values and priorities on the eve of the first conventional war the United States had fought in more than three decades. Watson's detailed study delves deeply into sources that reveal what officers actually thought, wrote, and did in the frontier and border regions. By examining the range of operations over the course of this quarter-century, he shows that the processes of peacekeeping, coercive diplomacy, and conquest were intricately and inextricably woven together.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even as the discovery and exploitation of hephaestium helped bring the Civil War to its close in 1869, the arms race it engendered resulted in a cold war just as bitter and violent as the open hostilities had been. With neither side willing to rely solely upon the talents of their scientific establishments, saboteurs, double-agents, and assassins found ample employment. Against this backdrop of suspicion and fear, thousands of Americans – Northerners and Southerners alike – headed west. Some to escape the legacies of the war, some to find their own land, some for the lure of that great undiscovered strike of hephaestium that would make them rich, and some simply to escape the law. Ahead of these pioneers stood the native tribes, behind them followed the forces of two governments, while to the north and south, foreign powers watched closely for their own opportunities. This newly unearthed collection of the works of Miles Vandercroft fills a considerable gap in our knowledge of the travels of that remarkable individual, and also provides a fascinating guide to the costume and equipment of the forces active in the great drive westwards.

Book Frontier Army Sketches Classic Reprint

Download or read book Frontier Army Sketches Classic Reprint written by James W. Steele and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Frontier Army Sketches But here, in mountain fastnesses and the dreary isolation of the wilderness, you strangely come upon the only genuine chivalry extant in American life. I may be taken to task for this Wholesale statement; for the over-busy, nervous, money-getting citizens of this great country claim all good qualities as their own. Therefore I will explain: Chivalry, in its essence, means not a careless but a careful regard for the opinions, feelings, and personal comfort of others, but more especially of women. Besides that, it means entire but polite candor, and no tricks in trade or anything else. It means that the affairs of life are conducted on honor. Cap tain Jinks in the wilderness practises this code, and has done so for so long that while staid and respectable citizens might smile at his punctilious ness, they, together with their wives and daughters, would find him a very pleasant companion, and might do well to try to find time to imitate some of his very foolish airs.
