Book Commercial Uses and Volume of Hawaiian Tree Fern

Download or read book Commercial Uses and Volume of Hawaiian Tree Fern written by Robert Elvon Nelson and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several species of tree fern grow to large sizes on the Hawaiian islands. Roots, growing from the base of fronds, develop a trunk of fibrous material that has commercial uses. Harvesting and processing tree fern is the basis of a small, thriving industry. A volume table for estimating the cubic contents of individual ferns is given together with preliminary information on the abundance, concentration, and total volume of this natural resource.

Book Ferns of Hawaii National Park

Download or read book Ferns of Hawaii National Park written by Douglass H Hubbard and published by . This book was released on 2019-07-15 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The most abundant ferns growing beneath the larger tree ferns are AMAUMAU (40) and the AMAU (41). Found frequently in both the Kilauea and Haleakala sections of the Park, the amaumau is usually larger than the less common amau and the fronds are not as hairy. The easiest method of identification, however, is by comparing the undersides of the frond segments (see illustration). The amaumau is smooth while the amau is prominently veined. Usually smaller than the true tree ferns, and known only from the Hawaiian Islands, ferns of this genus may reach heights as great as 12 feet. A comparison of the photographs of these ferns with the tree ferns will show that the entire frond of the AMAU or AMAUMAU resembles a single segment of the many-branched frond of the tree fern."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fern-lover once wrote: “If you wish to know ferns you must follow them.” Hawaiʻi, with approximately two hundred species of ferns and fern allies, is the ideal place to begin the journey, and Ferns of Hawaiʻi the ideal guide. Written for those who wish to become followers of these delightfully subtle plants, this introductory work begins with a description of Hawaiʻi’s ferns and their ecology. Sections on where to find ferns, their use by Hawaiians, and common, Hawaiian, and scientific names are provided. With the aid of color and black and white photographs, naturalist Kathy Valier describes more than sixty of the most common ferns growing wild in Hawaiʻi, from the tiny water fern azolla to the wiry masses of the scrambling uluhe. Information on habitat and distribution accompanies each description.
