Book excerpt: Welcome Home: The Army and My Vietnam, is a series of documentary-style stories of a Veteran's experiences in the Army both stateside and during his combat tour in Vietnam. From boot camp to his return home and living with the aftermath of his experiences, this is a very personal perspective on the Army, the war and our society as seen through the eyes of a soldier. Welcome Home offers an historically accurate account from someone who served during a time when our country did not support our Veterans or appreciate their service. Most of these stories have never been told. Bits and pieces now and then have been shared with family and friends but never entirely and never in detail. The author's two years in the Army shaped the rest of his life and he decided to share his experiences for other Veterans who have never told their stories. This book was written for them, his family, friends and for himself. The book's message is one of hope. It is never too late no matter how long it has been, or how difficult the road, there is always hope. Every individual needs to take the necessary steps to change and make things better for themselves. Fortunately, there is a myriad of resources available today for Veterans of all conflicts. Society is now supportive and our government is providing improved care at all levels for our Veterans as are many private organizations. Personal note from the author: I encourage all Vietnam Veterans to write about their experiences. Those days and times are part of our lives and should not be forgotten. Unfortunately, many of us are dying without sharing these stories. My hope is that any Veteran who reads this book would be inspired to write about his or her own stories for their families, future generations and themselves. The exercise brings clarity and closure to that chapter of our lives.

Book Beyond the Wall the Making of the Welcome Home Events for the Vietnam Veterans

Download or read book Beyond the Wall the Making of the Welcome Home Events for the Vietnam Veterans written by Jodie Talley and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2005-06 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On July 4, 1987 the definitive Welcome Home events for the Vietnam veterans took place in Washington DC, aired on HBO, and included a vast number of celebrities/musical entertainers in a 5-hour+ extravaganza that Congress declared as the official Welcome Home day for the vets. The event raised consciousness about vet issues and also millions of dollars for vet causes through the associated 501(c)(3) foundation, Welcome Home, Inc. As benefit concerts go, wrote the New York Post, 'Welcome Home' was a more unified and successful event, in terms of both its music and its message, than such well-intentioned spiritual brethren as 'Live Aid' and 'Farm Aid'. Beyond The Wall covers the origins and making of the events, while capturing the essence of the Baby Boom generation and the history that marked their lives. Since my mother was the Welcome Home founder and exec producer, this work is also a very personal family tale and labor of love.

Book Saving the Vietnamese Orphans

Download or read book Saving the Vietnamese Orphans written by Marjorie Haun and published by Author House. This book was released on 2012-09-12 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Operation Babylift was one of the largest humanitarian efforts of the 20th Century. As American troops were pulled out of Vietnam, the vulnerable bui doi orphans were left exposed to the dangers presented by the North Vietnamese invasion. These children, many of whom were of mixed race, had nowhere to go and their caretakers in the orphanages were overwhelmed with the tasks of both caring for small children and defending them from the perils of war. President Gerald Ford made a decision to airlift these innocent children out of Southeast Asia. Would there there be enough time and resources available to get these children out of the country and into the arms of loving, adoptive families? Saving the Vietnamese Orphans is the true story of this compassionate and dangerous effort on the parts of thousands of military personnel, civilians, and humanitarian workers to rescue these precious children from the terrible fate that awaited them if they remained.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Death is often welcome for soldiers who returned from Vietnam because it appears to be the only means of peace within. Knowing that each day could, and in all probability, will be his last, the soldier's thought process becomes distorted and his animalistic instincts take over and allow for total abandonment of inhibitions. These soldiers answered the nation's call and they paid the price for the freedoms we as a nation hold dear. They are also the ones who continue to pay the price for the combat experience and that part of us that died in country. These men suffer from PTSD, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and this is their story.

Book excerpt: "Welcome Home : a monument of honor" is must-read, unique book written and produced as the historical American legacy dedicated to the honor, the dignity and humanity of Vietnam veterans. It is produced as an elegant, coffee-table style volume. Ross Lewis, Army veteran and author, traveled 20,000 miles, through fourteen states between 2010 and 2013 to personally visit and interview Army, Navy, Marine, and Air Force Vietnam veterans (men and women) to collect their precious stories and brilliant non-combat photographs of Vietnam. The powerful biographies include veterans who served in Vietnam from early 1954 through the evacuation of Saigon, twenty-one ears later in April, 1975. The collection of brilliant photographs, taken by the veterans, are non-paralleled in the history of Vietnam books. The personal stories include: Early American advisor's between 1957 through 1964; sailors aboard the USS Maddox in the 1964 Gulf of Tonkin incident. A marine medal of honor recipient who later became a three-star general; an Air Force chaplain who speaks about his own personal service and struggles; two West Point graduates who served in 1964 and 1966; a Marine Forward Observer who endured the siege of the Khe Sahn; a brown water naval officer who served in the Mekong Delta and, later, rose to the rank of four-star admiral,; and Air Force Special Commando who operated within a "team of twenty", the last Marine to "pull colors" during the evacuation of civilians and military personnel from the embattled city of Saigon. "Welcome Home : a Monument of Honor" is also a perfect gift to Vietnam veterans and their families. It serves as an American tribute to Vietnam veterans-- Taken from Amazon.com July 28, 2014.

Book Mission of Honor

Download or read book Mission of Honor written by Jim Crigler and published by Ecademy Press. This book was released on 2017-04-21 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of us never get to test ourselves in combat. As a UH-1 Helicopter pilot flying in the jungle highlands of South Vietnam, Warrant Officer Jim Crigler and the men he flew with were tested daily. Coming of age in the late 1960s and early 1970s was challenging for most young men of that era. Throw in drugs, free love, draft notices, the Vietnam War and a country deeply divided, and you have one of the most important books of this genre. This true story is a raw, bold, introspective autobiography where the author openly wrestles with his personal moral dilemma to find meaning and purpose in his life. He calls it his “Mission of Honor.”
