Book excerpt: From 5th September until 1st March 2020 the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia, in conjunction with the City of Antwerp, VisitFlanders and the Flemish Community, presents 'From Titian to Rubens. Masterpieces from Antwerp and other Flemish Collections', an exhibition curated by Ben Van Beneden, director of Rubenshuis in Antwerp. The Doge's apartments will be transformed into veritable 'constkamers', rooms filled with exquisite art demonstrating the riches of Flemish collections. Featuring artists including Titian, Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony van Dyck and Michiel Sweerts, the exhibition offers an array of works. Three icons of Venetian painting return to their hometown of Venice: Titian's Jacopo Pesaro presenting Saint Peter to Pope Alexander VI, the altarpiece of the former San Geminiano church, covered by the press worldwide as David Bowie's Tintoretto', and Titian's Portrait of a Lady and her Daughter (thought to be a depiction of Titian's mistress Milia and their daughter Emilia). A special section of the exhibition will be devoted to Flemish composer Adriaan Willaert who settled permanently in 'la Serenissima' to become Maestro di Cappella of the Basilica di San Marco in 1527. It was Willaert who founded the Venetian School of music that was to instruct, among others, Giovanni Gabrieli and Claudio Monteverdi.

Book excerpt: Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) proudly described his monumental painting Prometheus Bound as first among "the flower of my stock." This singular work demonstrates how Rubens engaged with and responded to his predecessors Michelangelo and Titian, with whom he shared an interest in depictions of physical torment. This book offers an in-depth case study of the Flemish artist's creative process and aesthetic, while also demonstrating why this particular painting has appealed to viewers over time. Many scholars have elaborated on Rubens's affinity for Titian, but his connection to Michelangelo has received far less attention. This study presents a new interpretation of Prometheus Bound, showing how Rubens created parallels between the pagan hero Prometheus and Michelangelo's Risen Christ from the Sistine Chapel's Last Judgment. Christopher D.M. Atkins expands our understanding of artistic transmission by elucidating how Rubens synthesized the works he saw in Italy, Spain, and his native Antwerp, and how Prometheus Bound in turn influenced Dutch, Flemish, and Italian artists. Exhibition: Philadelphia Museum of Art, USA (12.9.-6.12.2015).

Book excerpt: Love, desire, and beauty are intimately connected in Greek and Roman mythology, dominating the lives of gods and mortals. The texts that focus on these themes ? Homer?s Iliad and Odyssey, Ovid?s Metamorphoses, and Virgil?s Aeneid, among many others ? were revered by Renaissance and Baroque artists, who aimed to represent them in a powerfully expressive manner.00This fully illustrated catalogue offers a detailed study of mythological paintings by Titian, Veronese, Allori, Rubens, Ribera, Poussin, Van Dyck, and Velázquez. Inspired in some cases by a desire to emulate and in others by a sense of rivalry, these artists were responsible for the creation of a fascinating interpretative sequence that reflects the adaptability of the mythological tradition and its potential for constant renewal.00Exhibition: Museo del Prado, Madrid, Spain (02.03.-04.07.2021).

Download or read book Matt s Old Masters written by Matthew Collings and published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson. This book was released on 2003 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to an alarming book. In it Matthew Collings, known for his TV programmes and books about new art, tells you how to look at the old masters. Of course you can look at them however you like. But this book gives you some art historical facts as the context for what you're looking at - Collings gives you the resources you need, in order to make sense of what you're seeing. And he gets you to think for yourself. In art culture today all you hear about are literal meanings, about subject matter and ideas. Matt Collings objects to the droning repetition of that stuff. He looks to the past for a different model of art, one where the surface, the form, the look of something, is part of the idea, maybe even the main thing. We can't have the past back as a complete package, of course. That would be mad. But we can find critical principles in it that we can use to make something better out of our own time. The key figures he has chosen are Titian, Rubens, Velasquez and Hogarth. The first three stand for the highest that painting can go - rich, free, flowing, grand. In art historical terms, this is the 'painterly' stream of art. The last one didn't punch quite so high, but in him Collings sees a principle of adapting your understanding and admiration for what seems higher and greater than yourself - the achievements of the past - to your own sense of what is alive and real.Matthew Collings' new book gives a unique approach to the paintings of the past.

Book The World s Leading Painters Leonardo Da Vinci Raphael Titian Rubens Velasquez and Rembrandt Classic Reprint

Download or read book The World s Leading Painters Leonardo Da Vinci Raphael Titian Rubens Velasquez and Rembrandt Classic Reprint written by George B. Rose and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The World's Leading Painters Leonardo Da Vinci, Raphael, Titian, Rubens, Velasquez and Rembrandt The purpose of this book is to present in compact form the results of the latest researches and criticism. Upon many points in the lives of the painters, and as to the authenticity of many of their works, there has been much controversy. In brief biographies it is impossible to state the conflicting arguments. The author can only consider them, and, where a result seems to be established by a fair preponderance of the evidence, state it as a fact, at the risk of being considered ignorant by those who take the contrary view. As to the authenticity of the pictures the author has accepted the opinions of the recognized experts, only venturing to express his own judgment where they are at hopeless variance. The views as to the merits of the works mentioned are the author's own, arrived at after repeated examinations of each. The only exceptions are those in the Hermitage at St. Petersburg and in some private English collections, where he has been compelled to rely on photographs and on the opinions of others. His views will be found wanting in originality. This is not for want of patient study, but because great masterpieces are apt to make the same impression on normal minds. A complete bibliography of the subject, or even a list of the books, in several languages which the author has read or consulted, would be too voluminous; but for the benefit of those who would pursue the study further a brief reference to the biographies that are to be found in English may be welcome. Book excerpt: Peter Paul Rubens assembled a collection of art that was, for an artist and for the Netherlands, of unprecedented richness and breadth. Hundreds of pictures (including masterpieces by Titian, Bruegel, and Van Dyck) and prints and drawings, as well as ancient sculptures, coins, and gems, were joined with select works by Rubens himself and displayed in the artist's magnificent house in Antwerp. This richly illustrated volume is the first to treat the significance of the collection in depth, to document its major components, and to catalogue all the individual pieces in it. "A contribution to Rubens studies which will be of lasting value".--Oliver Millar, The Times Literary Supplement "[Muller] fully and effectively combines the techniques of the social historian, the intellectual historian, and the art historian in order to examine the cultural assumptions and achievements of the period. . . . That the story of Rubens as a collector can . . . cover so many aspects of the culture of seventeenth-century Europe is vivid testimony to the efficacy of Muller's integration of the techniques and interests of the historian and the art historian".--Theodore K. Rabb, Journal of Interdisciplinary History

Book excerpt: 2013 is officially Frans Hals Year, marking exactly 100 years since the Frans Hals Museum opened its doors. The most important exhibition in this jubilee year is 'Frans Hals: Eye to Eye with Rembrandt, Rubens and Titian', in which key works by Frans Hals are presented amid paintings by such famed colleagues as Titian, Rembrandt, Van Dyck, Jordaens and Rubens. In this eponymous publication, all the works in the exhibition are presented side by side, enabling the reader to compare the masterpieces and see how the artists inspired one another. These unique confrontati- ons of master painters are essential to an understan- ding of seventeenth-century art. Famous painters, after all, often produced their works in response to one another, with the aim of surpassing the other and creating something unique. 0Exhibition: Frans Hals Museum, Haarlem, the Netherlands (23.3.-28.7.2013). 0.
