Book excerpt: Excerpt from From the Thames to the Seine It had been raining hard the whole day, and when I got aboard accompanied by a friend we found that our bunks were covered with little pools of water. I had a conversation with the competent man which he won't forget while he lives. When bedding has to be packed in oilskin bags, it is time to pray for fine weather. This book was released on 2018-02-19 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The River Seine, Vol. 84 The Seine is the most important river of Frame, both on account of its being the highway for a flourishing inland trade, and in consequence of the extensive engineering works which have been carried out for its improvement. Its basin has also formed the subject of very careful hydrological investigations, for it was on the Seine that the systematic prediction of floods was first established, which has since been adopted for other French rivers. Like the Thames, it flows past the capital of the country, to which fact it owes a portion of its importance, though the centres of maritime trade to which it gives access are Situated lower down; like the Thames, also it has been made the receptacle for the sewage of the largest city on its banks, though recently it has been relieved of a portion of this nuisance by the establishment of extensive irrigation works on the plains of Gennevilliers (plate 2, Fig. Unlike the Thames, however, its estuary, being less favoured by nature, has afl'orded scope for important works of tidal-river improvement; and the distance of Paris from the sea has led to a more thorough extension of its inland navigation. Book A Book of Cambridge Verse Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Book of Cambridge Verse Classic Reprint written by Ernest Edward Kellett and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2016-11-23 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wanderings by the Seine: From Rouen to the Source For a short period in summer, it is possible to travel from Rouen to Paris by a passage steam - boat on the Seine: the voyage, however, is long, and not always pleasant. Our eyes, accustomed to the magnificent panorama presented by the lower part of the river, become discontented even with beauty itself the towns, villages, and castles, flit past us like shadows, and carry away with them, like shadows, their historical associations; till, by the time we reach our destination, we heartily regret having forsaken the moral world of the past and present, for the cold, dead face of external nature. Book The Seine The River that Made Paris

Download or read book The Seine The River that Made Paris written by Elaine Sciolino and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2019-10-29 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A vibrant, enchanting tour of the Seine from longtime New York Times foreign correspondent and best-selling author Elaine Sciolino. Elaine Sciolino came to Paris as a young foreign correspondent and was seduced by a river. In The Seine, she tells the story of that river from its source on a remote plateau of Burgundy to the wide estuary where its waters meet the sea, and the cities, tributaries, islands, ports, and bridges in between. Sciolino explores the Seine through its rich history and lively characters: a bargewoman, a riverbank bookseller, a houseboat dweller, a famous cinematographer known for capturing the river’s light. She discovers the story of Sequana—the Gallo-Roman healing goddess who gave the Seine its name—and follows the river through Paris, where it determined the city’s destiny and now snakes through all aspects of daily life. She patrols with river police, rows with a restorer of antique boats, sips champagne at a vineyard along the river, and even dares to go for a swim. She finds the Seine in art, literature, music, and movies from Renoir and Les Misérables to Puccini and La La Land. Along the way, she reveals how the river that created Paris has touched her own life. A powerful afterword tells the dramatic story of how water from the depths of the Seine saved Notre-Dame from destruction during the devastating fire in April 2019. A “storyteller at heart” (June Sawyers, Chicago Tribune) with a “sumptuous eye for detail” (Sinclair McKay, Daily Telegraph), Sciolino braids memoir, travelogue, and history through the Seine’s winding route. The Seine offers a love letter to Paris and the most romantic river in the world, and invites readers to explore its magic for themselves.

Book London River Classic Reprint

Download or read book London River Classic Reprint written by H. M. Tomlinson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from London River It begins on the north side of the City, at Poverty Corner. It begins imperceptibly, and very likely is no more than what a native knows is there. It does not look like a foreshore. It looks like another of the byways of the capital. There is nothing to distinguish it from the rest of Fenchurch Street. You will not find it in the Directory, for its name is only a familiar bearing used by seamen among themselves. If a wayfarer came upon it from the west, he might stop to light a pipe (as well there as anywhere) and pass on, guessing nothing of what it is and of its memories. And why should he? London is built of such old shadows; and while we are here casting our own there is not much time to turn and question what they fall upon. Yet if some unreasonable doubt, a suspicion that he was being watched, made a stranger hesitate at that corner, he might begin to feel that London there was as different from Bays-water and Clapham as though deep water intervened. Book Richmond on the Thames Classic Reprint

Download or read book Richmond on the Thames Classic Reprint written by Richard Garnett and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Richmond on the Thames Not wholly in the busy world, nor quite Beyond it, blooms the garden that I love. These lines of the poet express the sentiment which has always guided monarchs, statesmen, and others engaged in the practical business of the world, in the selection of retreats from the cares of government and business. Hence some of the most delightful spots on earth are found in the Vicinity of great cities, where taste has taken advantage of natural beauty, and converted fields and woods into parks and gardens. It may be, however, that the world has now seen almost the last of such firm in uree. Two causes militate strongly against their perpetuation - the vast increase in the dimensions of modern cities, so infinitely beyond anything that could have been anticipated in past ages, and the still less expected acceleration of the means of transit, which now enables recreation to be sought at considerable distances without relaxing the sovereign's or the statesman's hold upon public affairs. Henry VII., the second founder of Richmond and the bestower of its present appellation, had a palace at Greenwich also. No place could have seemed more appropriate for the residence of the sovereign of a great marine state, on the way to be the first sea - power in the world; and there, in fact, Queen Elizabeth by preference received foreign ambassadors. By the time of Charles II., however, residence there had become impossible even to a less pleasure - loving sovereign, and only the happy thought of Nell Gwynne (if it was hers) has preserved Greenwich as an object of national pride and interest. Richmond has suffered less. It will appear from the following pages how the creation of the park, and of the gardens of the adjacent Kew, while in a measure encouraging residence, have protected it from being utterly swamped by suburban extension and merely utilitarian encroachments. Yet its royal days are over; its warmest admirers must acknowledge that the Sovereign is more fitly established at Windsor, and that, should any change occur, it will rather be in the direction of greater remoteness from, than closer proximity to the capital. Its destiny in the future is that of a retreat and playground for the people, especially for the metropolis, and great will be their shame and loss if they suffer it to be spoiled either by the sinister interests or the meddlesome interference which are always conspiring against the beautiful.
