During the Second World War he flew gliders in India in preparation for airborne assaults in Burma, one of the most perilous landscapes to pass across during this time. Post-war, he served on a fighter squadron in Germany and in Malaya, where he was recommended for an AFC. Later on, he commanded No 43 (F) Squadron, the famous 'Fighting Cocks', and was awarded the AFC. As a Group Captain, he commanded RAF Valley and was awarded the CBE. He ended his RAF career as director of Flying Training where he set up the first team of the Red Arrows. By careers end, he had flown fifty-six different types of aircraft.On leaving the RAF, he became the Civil Aviation Security Adviser to the UK Government, serving for eight years as a Crown Servant and a further seven years as a consultant. He was a frequent advisor to the Cabinet Office Briefing Room 'A' (Cobra), consulting with members of the cabinet on national and international aviation matters in the wake of a series of security and terrorist emergencies. In 1993 he was appointed Duty Lieutenant for Greater London, with responsibilities for the borough of Hillingdon, location of both Heathrow and Northolt airport. He looked after members of the Royal Family in their departures from these airports and became a good friend of Princess Diana, chaperoning her on a number of solo outings. Interesting details relating to some of their exchanges are included here. This is a unique autobiography, taking in a vast spectrum of events and experiences. It is also an important record of political, aviation and social history and should appeal to enthusiasts of all these areas of interest.

General George Churchill Kenney arrived in the South- west Pacific theater in August 1942 to find that his command, if not in a shambles, was in dire straits. The theater commander, General Douglas MacArthur, had no confidence in his air element. Kenney quickly changed this situation. He organized and energized the Fifth Air Force, bringing in operational commanders like Whitehead and Wurtsmith who knew how to run combat air forces. He fixed the logistical swamp, making supply and maintenance supportive of air operations, and encouraging mavericks such as Pappy Gunn to make new and innovative weapons and to explore new tactics in airpower application. The result was a disaster for the Japanese. Kenney's airmen used air power-particularly heavily armed B-25 Mitchell bombers used as commerce destroyers-to savage Japanese supply lines, destroying numerous ships and effectively isolating Japanese garrisons. The classic example of Kenney in action was the Battle of the Bismarck Sea, which marked the attainment of complete Allied air dominance and supremacy over Japanese naval forces operating around New Guinea. In short, Kenney was a brilliant, innovative airman, who drew on his own extensive flying experiences to inform his decision-making. David Moore Cook, or DMC to his friends and colleagues, was one of the valiant “Few” who flew and fought against the Luftwaffe in the summer and autumn of 1940 during the Battle of Britain. A native of Huddersfield, he joined 609 (West Riding) Squadron before the war, the squadron was posted to RAF Middle Wallop in Hampshire north of the vital ports of Southampton and Portsmouth, and was tasked with protection of the English coast. In this gripping account of the combats that raged in the skies above the British mainland, DMC is very modest of his own achievements, which had led by November 1940 to 6 confirmed victories. In recognition of his sterling record he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and assigned to be a flying instructor in late 1940 to help train the pilots who would fill the depleted ranks of fighter command. Having survived the long odds of the Battle of Britain, Flight Lieutenant Crook did not survive the war, he was listed as missing in action during a routine reconnaissance mission off the coast of Scotland.

Book excerpt: On 2 September 2006, RAF Nimrod XV230 was on a routine mission in southern Afghanistan when she suffered a catastrophic mid-air fire, leading to the total loss of the aircraft and the death of the 12 crew and two mission specialists on board. An RAF Board of Inquiry (2007) concluded that the loss was caused by a fuel escape and its ignition by contact with an exposed element of the Cross-Feed/Supplementary Cooling Pack (SCP) duct. The Nimrod Review was set up to examine the arrangements for ensuring airworthiness and safe operation of the Nimrod MR2, to assess where responsibility lies for any failure and what lessons are to be learned. The Review concludes the most likely source of fuel was an overflow during air-to-air refuelling and agrees with the ignition source. It highlights design flaws introduced at three stages in the life of XV230, and failure to heed previous potentially relevant incidents. The Nimrod safety case drawn up between 2001 and 2005 is found to be error-strewn and incompetent and characterised by a general malaise, an assumption that the Nimrod was safe because it had flown for 30 years. The Review criticises BAE Systems, the MoD Nimrod Integrated Project Team, QinetiQ and individual personnel from those organisations involved in the safety case. Organisational causes are also identified: in-service support for equipment; major organisational changes between 1998 and 2008; and delays in procurement of the Nimrod MRA4 replacement. Lessons to be learned are profound and wide-ranging. Recommendations are made for a new approach in eight key areas: principles (leadership, independence, people, simplicity); the airworthiness regime; safety cases; aged aircraft; personnel strategy; industry strategy; procurement; safety culture. The loss of XV230 was avoidable and a systemic breach of the Military Covenant.
