Book Cooking in Other Women s Kitchens Enhanced Ebook

Download or read book Cooking in Other Women s Kitchens Enhanced Ebook written by Rebecca Sharpless and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As African American women left the plantation economy behind, many entered domestic service in southern cities and towns. Cooking was one of the primary jobs they performed, feeding generations of white families and, in the process, profoundly shaping southern foodways and culture. In Cooking in Other Women's Kitchens: Domestic Workers in the South, 1865-1960, Rebecca Sharpless argues that, in the face of discrimination, long workdays, and low wages, African American cooks worked to assert measures of control over their own lives. As employment opportunities expanded in the twentieth century, most African American women chose to leave cooking for more lucrative and less oppressive manufacturing, clerical, or professional positions. Through letters, autobiography, and oral history, Sharpless evokes African American women's voices from slavery to the open economy, examining their lives at work and at home. The enhanced electronic version of the book includes twenty letters, photographs, first-person narratives, and other documents, each embedded in the text where it will be most meaningful. Featuring nearly 100 pages of new material, the enhanced e-book offers readers an intimate view into the lives of domestic workers, while also illuminating the journey a historian takes in uncovering these stories.

Book excerpt: Explore the connection between culinary inspiration and one of the world's oldest forms of rebel art! From James Beard Award winners, Top Chef competitors, and Food Network stars to prep cooks, interns, and sous chefs, few other people are more closely associated with tattoos than chefs. Professional kitchens have traditionally been an unseen haven for many of society's misfits, but recently they have been transformed into stages as the world's obsession with great food and great chefs continues to grow. Knuckle tattoos that once excluded a person from many careers have become a badge of honor and the tattoos are now a testament to their commitment to their craft. Eat Ink goes beyond their Michelin stars and chef's coats to explore what lies beneath: seasoned cooks who love preparing original plates and wear their tattoos proudly as they share the experiences that led them to the kitchen. Inside this cookbook, you'll discover a range of recipes as diverse as the chefs themselves, as well as personal details about the chef's remarkable journeys through the kitchen (and the tattoo parlor). From Lish Steiling's Roasted Parsnip and Kale Salad to Rick Tramonto's Gemelli with Chicken and Spring Herb Sauce to Duff Goldman's Pineapple Hummingbird Cake, each revealing profile offers a never-before-seen peek behind the kitchen door and into the mind of a chef. Complete with hundreds of full-color photographs and 60 delicious recipes from today's top chefs, Eat Ink invites you into their kitchens to sample some of world's best plates.

Book excerpt: During the holiday season, a governess loses her heart to an earl with no intention of marrying again, in this Cinderella story set in Regency England. After defending her virtue by striking the besotted son of her employer, Miss Evalyn Pennington is discharged from her position under a cloud of scandal. With no place to go and no prospects for the coming year, the impoverished governess accepts an invitation from Jamie Everard, heir to an earldom, to spend the holidays at his family’s estate. But Evalyn has barely settled in at Gyllford Manor when she catches the eye of Philip Everard, the fourth Earl of Gyllford—and Jamie’s father. After his wife died, Philip vowed to never marry again, despite his sister’s best efforts to reintroduce him to London society. Then, his son brings a guest home for Christmas. Is the lovely, intelligent Evalyn the woman to make his footloose son settle down at last? But why does Jamie treat Evalyn in such a cavalier manner? And what is Philip to do about the reigning beauty of London who has set her cap for him—and is about to set in motion a scheme that will have far-reaching consequences for them all? A witty and warm tale about morals, mores, marriage, and mistaken intentions, this classic Regency holiday romance introduces a woman who refuses to surrender her ideals, and a man in danger of losing the one thing he swore never again to give: his heart.
