Book From the Gulf to Ararat an Expedition Through Mesopotamia and Kurdistan Classic Reprint

Download or read book From the Gulf to Ararat an Expedition Through Mesopotamia and Kurdistan Classic Reprint written by G. E. Hubbard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from From the Gulf to Ararat, an Expedition Through Mesopotamia and Kurdistan I have to preface this book with an apology and, worse still, an excuse. The apology is for venturing to publish at the present time the record of a journey which (except for quite the last stage) took place in that almost prehistoric epoch before the war. My excuse is twofold: firstly, that fifteen months of enforced idleness drove me into writing it; and, secondly, that subsequent events have contrived to add a special interest which it could not otherwise have claimed. Although in no sense a war-book, it deals with countries which have been the scene of two, if not three, campaigns in the present war, and on this fact I rely to justify my temerity. The first of these campaigns-taking them in the order of our journey from South to North is the British Expedition to Mesopotamia. Its main features are so well known as barely to need repetition: the landing of our force at the mouth of the shatt-el-arab in November 1914. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until the 1880s, British travellers to Arabia were for the most part wealthy dilettantes who could fund their travels from private means. With the advent of an Imperial presence in the region, as the British seized power in Egypt, the very nature of travel to the Middle East changed. Suddenly, ordinary men and women found themselves visiting the region as British influence increased. Missionaries, soldiers and spies as well as tourists and explorers started to visit the area, creating an ever bigger supply of writers, and market for their books. In a similar fashion, as the Empire receded in the wake of World War II, so did the whole tradition of Middle East travel writing. In this elegantly crafted book, James Canton examines over one hundred primary sources, from forgotten gems to the classics of T E Lawrence, Thesiger and Philby. He analyses the relationship between Empire and author, showing how the one influenced the other, leading to a vast array of texts that might never have been produced had it not been for the ambitions of Imperial Britain. This work makes for essential reading for all of those interested in the literature of Empire, travel writing and the Middle East.

Book Arab Iranian Rivalry in the Persian Gulf

Download or read book Arab Iranian Rivalry in the Persian Gulf written by Farzad Sharifi-Yazdi and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Iranian ambitions in the Persian Gulf and rivalries with Arab neighbours are subject to intense - and heated - speculation, controversy and debate. Here, Farzad Cyrus Sharifi scrutinises the rival Arab-Iranian claims to Bahrain, the Shatt al-Arab waterway, and the Abu Musa and Tunbs islands in the years after World War II and before the Iranian revolution. Through investigation of previously unexamined primary materials and interviews with leading players, this book sheds new light on the evolution and dynamics of hegemonic and nationalistic Arab-Iranian rivalries and how these rivalries began to find symbolic expression through territorial disputes. Sharifi illustrates that these ongoing disputes - and the deep-seated tensions still prevalent in Arab-Iranian relations - are largely rooted in how they were constructed in the post-World War II period, making this book vital reading for researchers of the politics, history, international relations and diplomacy of the Middle East.
