Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alone in Africa: Or Seven Years on the Zambesi In the year 1886, Mathilde Keck, now Madame Goy, was received as a pupil into the Huguenot Seminary, Wellington, Cape Colony. Her parents were French missionaries at Mabolela on the Free State border of Basutoland. They had been pioneers in that part of the country, and had lived for eighteen months in their waggon, until a home could be built. Hardship had only deepened their love for the Basutos and their desire to win them for Christ. Mathilde came to us an earnest Christian with a great desire to devote herself to winning the heathen for the Saviour who was so precious to her own soul. Many people may say that there is no excuse for writing another book about South Africa, but it must be remembered that it is a country in the making, and, as such, is in a state of constant change: for this reason it always provides something new for the traveller to record. My thanks are due to Colonel Frank Rhodes for some of the photographs, and for the exceptional opportunities of acquiring information which I enjoyed in his company last year. I visited all the different places mentioned here with him, and was enabled to see more of the country, and to learn more about its problems, than would have been possible for one travelling under the ordinary conditions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Far Interior, Vol. 2 of 2: A Narrative of Travel and Adventure From the Cape of Good Hope Across the Zambesi to the Lake Regions of Central Africa The open centre Of the town swarmed with ebonised humanity. Sounds of song and jubilant shouts mingled with the throbbing Vibrations of the everlasting drum, breaking with droll and savage harmonies the natural stillness of the forest air. The noise rose and fell like rolling waves of sound, or like the spasmodic drone of a rising gale. Dark-skinned maidens danced merrily and sang their shrillest notes, keeping time as they stamped the ground. Book Geography of Africa South of the Zambesi Classic Reprint

Download or read book Geography of Africa South of the Zambesi Classic Reprint written by William Henry Parr Greswell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geography of Africa South of the Zambesi This question, and especially that portion Of it which concerns native education, I have drawn freely upon an original paper on this subject read before the Fellows of the Royal Colonial Institute, and printed in vol. Xv. Of their Proceedings. Together with notices of a more purely geographical character I have introduced many remarks as to the wealth, industries, character, and languages of the numerous races living in South Africa, for which I am indebted partly to the usual and accepted sources at hand for a writer on South Africa, and partly to my own' notes and Observations collected carefully during a seven years' residence in South Africa itself. There is one great fact which is very conspicuous in that country. It is not a land like North America, to which European immigration is directed on a very large scale and the statistics of the country prove this. This may be accounted for by the fact that in the Cape Colony at least the land is divided into very large farms held chiefly by Dutch owners, who are extremely tenacious of this form of property. They do not sell up and go north as Americans sell up and go west. Moreover, the land of South Africa, from descriptions given below, will be seen to be of a kind adapted rather to the farmer on a large scale than to the small agriculturist. In the east the teeming Kafi'ir races occupy the land and provide the labour market of the Colony. Still, there would seem to be a fair number of Openings for farmers and agriculturists with a small amount of capital at their command, who may bring down the price of the loaf in South Africa, which is very high. In the towns and mining centres artisans and craftsmen of all descriptions are well paid. This book is designed to be principally an educational. Download or read book Narrative of an Expedition to the Zambesi and Its Tributaries written by David Livingstone and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 676 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Narrative of an Expedition to the Zambesi and Its Tributaries: And of the Discovery of the Lakes Shirwa and Nyassa, 1858-1864 But the main object of the Portuguese. Government is not geographicah It is to bolster up that pretense to power which has been the only obstacle to the establishment of lawful commerce and friendly relations with the native in habitants of Eastern Africa. The following work contains abundant confirmation of all that was advanced by me at the Bath meeting of the British Association; and I may here add that it is this unwarranted assumption of power over 1360 miles of coast - from English River to. Cape Delgado, where the Portuguese have, in fact, little real authority - which per petuates the barbarism of the inhabitants. The Portuguese interdict all foreign commerce except at a very few points where they have established custom-houses, and even at these, by an exaggerated and obstructive tariff and differential du ties, they completely shut out the natives from any trade ex cept that in slaves. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How I Crossed Africa, Vol. 2 of 2: From the Atlantic to the Indian Ocean, Through Unknown Countries; Discovery of the Great Zambesi Affluents, &C The political organisation of the Kingdom of the Lui is very different to that of the other peoples I had visited in Africa. It possesses two distinct ministries, that of war and foreign affairs, the last being sub divided into two sections, each having a minister of its own. One of them has to do with Western, the other with Southern affairs, SO that while the former deals with the Portuguese in Benguella, the latter has to treat with the English at the Cape. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rambles Through the Archives of the Colony of the Cape of Good Hope: 1688-1700 Many authors have complained that, although their works are read, the introductions penned by them with so much pains are generally skipped, and that often the writing of even a small one is a more difficult task than the treatment of many portions of the subject to which the volume which it is intended to introduce, has been devoted. Be this as it may, I hope that at least a few of my readers will peruse this first page. It will explain the reason why I wrote. Download or read book The Story of the Universities Mission to Central Africa written by Henry Rowley and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Universities Mission to Central Africa: From Its Commencement Under Bishop Mackenzie, to Its Withdrawal From the Zambesi This story of the Universities' Mission to East Central Africa is simply my African Journal adapted to the narrative form. I have been led to publish it partly by the urgent request of many who thought that a full and unreserved account of the Mission was needed, and partly because friends in whose judgment I have great confidence have thought that it would find readers, not only among the professed supporters of Missions, but also among the many who, from whatever cause, are interested in the African race. The portrait of Bishop Mackenzie is from a photograph taken at Cape Town after his consecration; the portraits of the Rev. H. De W. Burrup, the Rev. H. C. Scudamore, and John Dickinson, Esq., are from photographs taken before they left England; while those of the Ajawa are from photographs which my friend Horace Waller, Esq., had taken at Cape Town. Several of the other illustrations, as will be seen, are from sketches by Dr. Meller; the rest from sketches by myself. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Brighter South Africa, or Life at the Cape and Natal He made his way to London, finding that the home ward cargoes of his Indian Ships were mainly directed to the Thames. In 1872 he commenced his connec tion with the African trade. At that time the Union Steam Packet Company had a monopoly of the traffic with the Cape. In this attempt he was aided by the Cape merchants; and in January a small Steamer, the Ireland, was despatched to the Cape by the firm of which Mr. Donald Currie, as he then was, was the head. Now he has no less than fifteen magnificent steamers constantly ploughing the watery highway between London and the Cape, halting at Lisbon.
