Book From Props to Jets

Download or read book From Props to Jets written by Jon Proctor and published by . This book was released on 2010-06 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the years from 1952 to 1962 saw the rise and dominance of luxurious piston-powered airliners like the Douglas DC-7, Lockheed Constellation, and Boeing Stratocruiser, revolutionary new jet airliners soon rendered them obsolete. Aircraft like the Boeing 707, Douglas DC-8, and Convair 880 quickly shrank travel times around the world in half as the traveling public enthusiastically embraced the new and very futuristic jet age. This book celebrates that exciting time period with an in-depth look at all the aircraft that made commercial jet flight possible, comparing these radical new jetliners with the classic propeller-driven aircraft that preceded them. By using stunning original photography, ads, and graphics, this book beautifully captures the unique "feel" of that magical era by featuring the very best in rare aviation nostalgia. Additionally, the book offers accurate technical detail and rich historical perspective. The photos in this edition are black and white.

This book welcomes the reader with snapshots during the golden age of flying from carrying mail to a time when excited passengers were treated as guests and everyone dressed in their Sunday best to board American Airlines. It is engaging and appreciated. We served the flying public with much, much "More Than a Ticket." We had time to hang coats, learn names, have a conversation, serve a delicious meal and hold babies. You will feel the excitement of times gone by and get a glimpse of how the atmosphere of air travel has changed through the years. The drama of time has created a different picture. Part one: "My Life as a Stewardess," takes the reader on a journey with a shy country girl to the city, but she is still a country girl as she becomes a confident stewardess serving all passengers, including the rich and famous, making everyone feel at home. How did she do it? Part two: "On Wings of Time," features short stories from AA stewardesses, pilots, flight engineers, and passengers. The young and old, casual readers and aviation enthusiasts will be delighted with memoirs. Stewardess Argie, "Am I cut out for this job?" "They say I am Dyslexic." "Make friends with your cognitive gifts." (Stewardess on Boeing 707 jet inaugural flight and also did public relations for AA.) Jon, son of pilot Heath Proctor, "My father was a pioneer airmail pilot," "Dad's AA retiree ID card, with employee number 02 on it!" (Father deceased.) Curt, son of AA mechanic and later a Flight Engineer Roy Jacobson, "I'll never forget the smell of jet fuel." "We would go through the hangars and look at the planes." (Father deceased.) Stewardess MaryLou, "A secretarial job opened a few miles from home with AA engineering office. I never wanted to leave." (MaryLou was on the Electra team and subsequently became an AA stewardess.) Stewardess Audrey, "Once a stewardess, always a stewardess." (Flew as a "stewardess" and then "flight attendant.") Stewardess Gerry, "I was really nervous when I arrived because the other girls waiting to be interviewed were wearing business suits, high heels, gloves, and some were wearing hats. I was wearing a broomstick skirt and sandals." (Friend who flew on Boeing 707s with me.) Stewardess Polly, "Interviews are over, and besides, you aren't the type." (Polly became an outstanding Stewardess.) Stewardess Joan, "Important faces stood out in the crowd." (Face in the crowd was a younger man who become her husband.) Passenger Margaret, now age 97, "I thought he was getting a little too friendly (Taxi cab driver.) Passenger Bob, "I don't know what I mumbled, but when the plane started to roll forward to take off, she sat down beside me, smiled, and one of her soft hands covered my gripping knuckles, and we were off and flying." (Bob had been a passenger in two near misses before this flight.) Stewardess Diane, "I told him that I would meet him at the gate. After we finished deplaning, I thought to myself, 'Did I do the right thing?'" (Passenger without a ride to his home near where Diane lived.) Stewardess Judi, ..". meeting President Kennedy and then my husband are hard to top! (Husband was a famous singer/actor.) Engineer to Captain Tony, "There were no real flight simulators in those Pleistocene days, so all of the flight training was done in the airplane." (Tony was responsible for training AA jet pilots.) I have dedicated these words with love and respect to my flying friends. An expression of appreciation for the community of American Airlines. Book Open Skies for Africa

Download or read book Open Skies for Africa written by Charles E Schlumberger and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2010-06-23 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Africa, where poor roads, ports, and railways often constrain efficient transportation, air transport holds great potential as a lever for economic growth and development. Yet Africa has suffered several decades of inefficient air services. Uncompetitive flag carriers, set up by newly independent African states, offered primarily intercontinental flights, while the domestic air service market remained underdeveloped and underserved. The 1999 pan-African treaty on liberalization of access to air transport markets, the Yamoussoukro Decision, attempted to address these shortcomings. Yet a decade later, only partial liberalization has been achieved. 'Open Skies for Africa: Implementing the Yamoussoukro Decision' reviews progress made in carrying out the treaty and suggests ways in which the liberalization process can be encouraged. The book analyzes the completed and still-pending steps toward implementation of the Yamoussoukro Decision, both on a pan-African level and within various regions. Special focus is given to the challenges posed by the poor aviation safety and security standards that exist in most African countries. Finally, the book measures the impact that certain policy steps of the Yamoussoukro Decision have had and evaluates the economic significance of air transportation and its full liberalization in Africa. The book concludes that the process of liberalizing African air services must continue, and provides policy recommendations for the way forward.

Book Foreign relations of the United States 1969 1976 V 20 Southeast Asia 1969 1972

Download or read book Foreign relations of the United States 1969 1976 V 20 Southeast Asia 1969 1972 written by and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on with total page 792 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Foreign Relations of the United States series presents the official documentary historical record of major foreign policy decisions and significant diplomatic activity of the United States Government. This volume is part of a subseries of the Foreign Relations of the United States that documents the most issues in the foreign policy of Presidents Richard M. Nixon and Gerald R. Ford. The subseries presents in multiple volumes a comprehensive documentary record of major foreign policy decisions and actions of the administrations of Presidents Nixon and Ford. This specific volume documents U.S. policy towards three important countries in Southeast Asia: Thailand, the Philippines, and Indonesia, 1969-1972, a period when the future of Southeast Asia was a major concern of American foreign policy makers. This is the last print volume to document U.S. policy towards Southeast Asia, other han those print volumes that document the Vietnam War during the Nixon-Ford administrations. For the January 1973 to January 1977 period, U.S. policy towards Southeast Asia (nations other than Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia is covered in an electronic-only volume. The decision to cover Thailand, the Philippines, and Indonesia for 1969-1975 in detail in this print volume was based on the fact that each country was a key ally - either formally or de facto - of the United States during the Vietnam war, and each played a specific role during the conflict. Thailand sent troops to fight in Vietnam, provided bases for U.S. airpower in Southeast Asia, and secretly provided training, troops, and arms to support U.S.-backed guerilla forces in Laos. The Philippines sent a 2,000-man civic action group to South Vietnam, and Filipinos made up many of the administrative contractors in South Vietnam. Indonesia provided key arms support to the Lon Nol government at a crucial time. In addition, Thailand, Philippines, and Indonesia were important countries in their own right, with key U.S. military and economic assistance programs, large embassies, and close relations with the United States. In each country, the United States had a considerable interest in their government''s success. The chapter on Thailand, the largest in the volume, has the most obvious and closest associations with the Vietnam War. A principal theme of this chapter is U.S. efforts to assure the Thais that unilateral withdrawal of U.S. troops in South Vietnam and a projected settlement of the war did not mean a lesser U.S. commitment to Thailand. A second key theme of the volume is the covert military role that Thailand''s military forces played in supporting the anti-communist forces in Laos and the potential role they could play in supporting the Lon Nol government in Cambodia. The second largest chapter in this volume documents U.S. policy towards the Philippines. The relationship between President Ferdinand Marcos and the Nixon administration is the dominant theme of this chapter. U.S. officials had to assure Marcos that they were neutral in the 1969 Philippines presidential elections and discourage his desire for a special channel to Washington. Corruption in the Marcos government, Marcos''s desire to revise the constitution to his benefit, and his eventual declaration of martial law in September 1972 in the face of student riots caused U.S. officials in Manila and Washington to assess whether he was the best man to lead the Philippines from the U.S. point of view. Other themes that are documented in the chapter are the ones that predate the Vietnam War, such as preference for Philippines exports to the United States, U.S. benefits for Filipino veterans who served in the Second World War, and U.S. bases in the Philippines. The final chapter in the volume deals with Indonesia, officially a non-aligned nation, but under strongman General Suharto, a de factor ally of the United States. The principal themes of this chapter are the question of Indonesia''s international debt left over from the Sukarno years and U.S. support for multilateral Indonesian debt relief among international lending organizations. A related theme is the amount of U.S. bilateral aid provided to Indonesia.
