Nothkr of the many insurrections which periodically occur in the Flowery Kingdom was now on the eve of brenking out, being again preceded with the usual fanatical massacres and outrages on foreigners. On this occasion it involved the united intervention of all Powers who had diplomatic relations with the Chinese Imperial Court, and whose representatives at Peking were performing their respective duties at great personal risk, and daily becoming more dangerous. The Boxer sedition arose in the province of Shantung, the home of secret societies. The real name of the society was the I-ho-ehilan, or "Patriotic Harmony Fists, ' roughly rendered into English by the word "Boxers." These people had a ritual which was largely composed of gymnastic posturing; the initiated were said to be impervious to bullets; they could walk on sunbeams, arrest rivers, stop or create fires by their mere gesture. The society gathered to itself all the rascality of Shantung and adjoining provinces, and its ambition was the extermination of the foreign missionaries and their converts, and any other foreigners they came across. The new religion, which appealed to the ignorant peasantry, spread like wildfire, and when it assumed immense proportions?, received the secret support of the officials, and of the Empress-Dowager herself The missionaries warned the Ministers of the coming storm and too late the Fleets assembled at Taku. Book excerpt: This book examines how the expansion of a steam-powered Royal Navy from the second half of the nineteenth century had wider ramifications across the British Empire. In particular, it considers how steam propulsion made vessels utterly dependent on a particular resource – coal – and its distribution around the world. In doing so, it shows that the ‘coal question’ was central to imperial defence and the protection of trade, requiring the creation of infrastructures that spanned the globe. This infrastructure required careful management, and the processes involved show the development of bureaucracy and the reliance on the ‘contractor state’ to ensure this was both robust and able to allow swift mobilisation in war. The requirement to stop regularly at foreign stations also brought men of the Royal navy into contact with local coal heavers, as well as indigenous populations and landscapes. These encounters and their dissemination are crucial to our understanding of imperial relationships and imaginations at the height of the imperial age.
