Download or read book From One Man s Heart written by Jim Womack and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2007-12 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Pain and Suffering are inevitable, but misery is optional." I once saw this motivational statement on a running shirt. I liked it and subscribed to it during my time as an ultra marathoner. When I reunited with my sweetheart from 1967 and married her in 2005, I began to understand that phrase in a new and challenging way. Harriette Burnette and I met and enjoyed a love affair in the summer of 1967. We lost touch and lived separate lives for thirty-eight years. During that time we lived very different and challenging lives. She suffered through a series of painful family and personal losses while raising two children on her own. I fought battles with depression, alcoholism, and professional dissatisfaction. Ultimately, after thirty-two years, my marriage ended in a divorce as well. During our separate, but incredibly similar experiences in life, we each held the belief that life still had something special in store for us. In 2005, through a series of unusual events, I made contact with Harriette after a thirty-eight year hiatus. Our subsequent reunion, courtship, and marriage made us believe that a power greater than ourselves worked in our lives to fill our needs and work miracles for us. Little did we know that, when we said, "I do" on that cold day in 2005, we were about to hop on one of life's most frantic, harrowing, and unimaginable rides. We both discovered the true meaning of pain as well as suffering and learned how our reactions to life's challenges can forever change lives. We took the pain and suffering, but we decided that misery just could not be an option. Jim Womack is a native of Botetourt County, Virginia and a graduate of Virginia Tech, where he studied Civil War History under the noted historian Dr. James I Robertson. Jim taught history at James River High School in Botetourt County for twenty-eight years before retiring in 2003. From 2000 until 2005, he trained for and ran many ultra marathons in central Virginia and elsewhere as well as traveled and backpacked around the western United States. In 2005, he reunited with his sweetheart from 1967 and entered a new and wonderful life with his new bride, Harriette. Shortly afterward, he learned that he had cancer and that his life would drastically change. Together, Jim and Harriette enjoy the providential love which they have found and continue to work together to build a special home for themselves and their families. As more and more people heard their remarkable story of love lost and love regained, Jim decided to write down their story and share their marvelous journey as a tribute to their individual and collective triumphs over disease and disappointment. In addition to From One Man's Heart, Jim also published a collection of student bloopers entitled When Misquotes Bit You. He is in the process of writing short stories about his youth in Botetourt County, his outdoor experiences, and his new life in Northern Virginia with Harriette. He plans to release one new volume each year.
Download or read book Transformation written by Stephen W. Smith and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2010-08-27 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life is not a flow chart. We weren't meant to master it on our own. We weren't meant to be mastered by it either. The discussion guides in the Transformation of a Man's Heart series put us in conversation with God and with one another to see how God shapes and transforms us in the ordinary experiences of our lives. Am I every going to change? he asks. If we're honest with ourselves, we'll admit that we're not the men we wish we were. Not only our dreams but our values are vulnerable to external forces and internal chaos: the wounds inflicted on us as well as the compromises we've allowed ourselves to make. In this discussion guide, inspired by essays in The Transformation of a Man's Heart, men will be reminded that wherever they find themselves, God is there with them, inviting them forward onto a new and better path. This study accompanies the book, The Transformation of a Man's Heart, compiled and edited by Stephen W. Smith.

Book excerpt: There's an old saying about the way to a man's heart... And another one about marrying in haste... The Way To A Man's Heart Meghan O'Day couldn't understand what a sophisticated, good-looking man like Professor Grey Carlyle saw in her-a simple, self-educated waitress. They shared a passion for classical literature, and he kept returning to her diner, yet she knew a relationship between them couldn't last. The way to a man's heart might be through his stomach...but she was meat and potatoes, not crepes suzette! From the minute Grey discovered Meghan in Rose's Diner, his heart just hadn't been the same. Her smile was like sunlight, a prism's array of color in his academic world of black and white. For her own good, Grey knew he should let her go. But how could he release a ray of sunshine?( A Hasty Wedding Clare Gilroy was sunshine and rainbows - and strictly no dice to darkly taciturn Reed Tonasket, whose Native American blood made him a misfit in her lily-white world. Damning his forbidden passion, safeguarding the harsh solitude of his soul, Reed vowed to steer clear of the tempting Anglo. Until a Las Vegas evening - and a dizzying spin of fortune - cast him into Clare's arms...

It has helped me understand why and how she thinks differently than I do about so many things. A husband, as this book points out, is to live with and love his wife with understanding. Download or read book A Man After His Own Heart written by Charles Siebert and published by Crown. This book was released on 2004 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Somewhere on this earth tonight, somewhere, I believe, not very far from me, there is a person whose heart I've touched. A person whose heart I've held in my hand. . . . So begins A Man After His Own Heart, an extraordinary narrative by acclaimed author, essayist, and poet Charles Siebert on that most elusive of topics--the human heart. On a rainy December night one recent winter, Siebert was given the rare opportunity to accompany a team of surgeons both in the harvesting of a human heart from the body of a young woman who'd recently died of a brain aneurysm, and in the subsequent delivery and implantation of that heart into the hollowed-out chest of a waiting recipient. Beginning with his harrowing week-long wait for the harvest call to come and culminating with the moment in which one of the implant surgeons suddenly, inexplicably, places the author's hand on the wildly beating reanimated heart, Siebert manages to weave a seamless series of ruminations and reflections about his own obsession with the heart and his often-estranged father's fatal heart disease; about history's ongoing fascination with this most central and vital organ; and about modern science's latest startling discoveries concerning both the heart's biological origins and its long-intuited role in the play of our emotions. The resulting mix is nothing less than a radically new, definitive biography of life's most pondered and poeticized protagonist. This story is a journey into the literal and figurative heart of our being, revealing the previously unexplored ways in which the matter of modern science and timeless metaphor meet.

Download or read book The Heart of Man written by Erich Fromm and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2023-02-28 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The acclaimed social psychologist and New York Times–bestselling author of The Art of Loving discusses the nature of evil and humanity’s capacity for it. Originally published in 1964, The Heart of Man was influenced by turbulent times. Average Americans were suffering from different forms of evil, including a rise in juvenile delinquency. On a grander scale, the threat of nuclear war loomed over the nation, and President John F. Kennedy had been assassinated. What could drive humanity to do things such as these? In The Heart of Man, renowned humanist philosopher and psychoanalyst Erich Fromm investigates man’s capacity to destroy, his narcissism, and his incestuous fixation. He expands upon ideas he presented in Escape from Freedom, Man for Himself, and The Art of Loving, and examines the essence of evil, as well as the choice between good and evil. He also explores man’s ability to destroy and further considers freedom, aggression, destructiveness, and violence. “The Heart of Man questions human nature itself, from the forms of violence that plague it to individual and social narcissism to how the positive value of “love of life” can potentially outweigh the destructive “syndrome of decay” caused by the love of death and other harmful tendencies of thought.” —Midwest Book Review
