Book The Popular Religion and Folk Lore of Northern India Vol II of II

Download or read book The Popular Religion and Folk Lore of Northern India Vol II of II written by William Crooke and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on 2015-12-02 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The belief in the baneful influence of the Evil Eye prevails widely. According to Pliny, it was one of the special superstitions of the people of India, and at the present day it forms an important part of the popular belief. But the investigation of its principles is far from easy. It is very closely connected with a number of kindred ideas on the subject of diabolical influence, and few natives care to speak about it except in a furtive way. In fact, it is far too serious a matter to be discussed lightly. Walking about villages, you will constantly see special marks on houses, and symbols and devices of various kinds, which are certainly intended to counteract it; but hardly any one cares directly to explain the real motive, and if you ask the meaning of them, you will almost invariably be told that they are purely decorative, or that they have been made with some object which obviously conceals the real basis of the practice. One, and perhaps the most common theory of the Evil Eye is that Òwhen a child is born, an invisible spirit is born with it; and unless the mother keeps one breast tied up for forty days, while she feeds the child with the other (in which case the spirit dies of hunger), the child grows up with the endowment of the Evil Eye, and whenever any person so endowed looks at anything constantly, something will happen to it.Ó So, in Ireland we are told that Òthe gift comes by Nature and is born with one, though it may not be called into exercise unless circumstances arise to excite the power; then it comes to act like a spirit of bitter and malicious envy that radiates a poisonous atmosphere, which chills and blights everything within its reach.ÓÊ

Book Studies in Indo Muslim History by S H Hodivala Volume II

Download or read book Studies in Indo Muslim History by S H Hodivala Volume II written by Sanjay Garg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-08-30 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the field of medieval Indian historiography, an eight-volume magnum opus, History of India as Told by Its Own Historians, by Sir Henry Myers Elliot (1808-53) and the editor-compiler of his posthumous papers, John Dowson (1820-81), was published from London between 1867 and 1877. These landmark volumes continue to retain their popularity even nearly hundred and fifty years later, and scholars still learn from and conduct their research on the basis of this work. However, an enterprise of this scale and magnitude was bound to suffer from some serious shortcomings. An eminent Indian scholar, S.H. Hodivala undertook the daunting task of annotating Elliot and Dowson’s volumes and worked through all the new material, selecting or criticizing and adding his own suggestions where previous comments did not exist or appeared unsuitable. The first volume of Hodivala’s annotated Studies, was published in 1939, while the second was published posthumously in 1957. Over the years, while the work of Elliot and Dowson has seen many reprints, and is even available online now, Hodivala’s volumes have receded into obscurity. A new edition is presented here for the first time. Hodivala also published critical commentaries on 238 of about 2000 entries included in another very famous work, Hobson-Jobson (London, 1886) by Sir Henry Yule (1820-89) and Arthur Coke Burnell (1840-82). These have also been included in the present edition. These volumes are thus aimed at serving as an indispensable compendium of both, Elliot and Dowson’s, and for Yule and Burnell’s excellent contributions of colonial scholarship. At the same time these would also serve as a guide for comparative studies and critical appreciation of historical texts. Please note: Taylor & Francis does not sell or distribute the Hardback in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka

Book The Rise and Fall of Modern Empires Volume II

Download or read book The Rise and Fall of Modern Empires Volume II written by Saul Dubow and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume reproduces key historical texts concerning `colonial knowledges’. The use of the adjective 'colonial' indicates that knowledge is shaped by power relationships, while the use of the plural form, ’knowledges’ indicates the emphasis in this collection is on an interplay between different, often competing, cognitive systems. George Balandier’s notion of the colonial situation is an organising principle that runs throughout the volume, and there are four sub-themes: language and texts, categorical knowledge, the circulation of knowledge and indigenous knowledge. The volume is designed to introduce students to a range of important interventions which speak to each other today, even if they were not intended to do so when first published. An introductory essay links the themes together and explains the significance of the individual articles.

Book Multiple Identification Alternatives for Two Sassanid Equestrians on F r z b d I Relief

Download or read book Multiple Identification Alternatives for Two Sassanid Equestrians on F r z b d I Relief written by Reza Kalani and published by Tarikh Negar Monthly. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike the king himself, the identity of other figures carved out of Sassanid reliefs has mostly been controversial. This study attempts to resolve one of such controversial discussions on the identity of two Sassanid equestrians depicted on the Fīrūzābād I relief and thus on other Ardašīr I's reliefs. In a bid to cast light upon obscured Sassanid genealogical topics, the heraldic concept was took precedence in the course of investigations. To the best of the present author's knowledge, historical texts (mostly Arabic sources), numismatic evidence and visual analysis of ornaments probably related to ranks were all employed for this purpose. In some cases, however, the author was forced into an argumentum ex silentio against his will due to a lack or shortage of historical evidence. There are two premises central to this investigation: first, the fact that the early Sassanids followed the lead of the late Arsacids in several political and cultural aspects, and, second, the existence of a sort of a heraldic system in both early Sassanid and late Arsacid periods.

Book Phantasms of the Living Volume I

Download or read book Phantasms of the Living Volume I written by Edmund Gurney and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2020-08-06 with total page 858 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the first of two volumes of “Phantasms of the Living”, an 1886 work on the subject of spiritualism by leading members of the Society for Psychical Research Edmund Gurney (1847 – 1888), Frederic W. H. Myers (1843 – 1901), and Frank Podmore (1856 – 1910). Within it, the authors have documented more than 700 cases of ghost sightings which they believe are in fact evidence of psychic ability. This volume contains an introduction by Myers as well as an outline of their analytical methods, while the rest is dedicated to telepathy, hallucinations, dreams, etc. “Phantasms of the Living” constitutes a pioneering study that provides a vivid insight into the Victorian fascination with the occult and the supernatural not to be missed by those with an interest in the subject. Contents include: “Preliminary Remarks: Grounds of Caution”, “The Experimental Basis: Thought-Transference”, “The Transition From Experimental to Spontaneous Telepathy”, “General Criticism of the Evidence for Spontaneous Telepathy”, “Note on Witchcraft”, etc. Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. We are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with the original text and artwork.

Book The R m ya a of V lm ki An Epic of Ancient India Volume II

Download or read book The R m ya a of V lm ki An Epic of Ancient India Volume II written by and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2016-12-13 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second volume of a translation of India's most beloved and influential epic saga, the monumental Rāmāyaṇa of Vālmīki. Of the seven sections of this great Sanskrit masterpiece, the Ayodhyakāṇḍa is the most human, and it remains one of the best introductions to the social and political values of traditional India. This readable translation is accompanied by commentary that elucidates the various problems of the text—philological, aesthetic, and cultural. The annotations make extensive use of the numerous commentaries on the Rāmāyaṇa composed in medieval India. The substantial introduction supplies a historical context for the poem and a critical reading that explores its literary and ideological components.

Book Kobieta sztuka i kolonizacja Wizerunki kobiet w strefie kontaktu indyjsko brytyjskiego

Download or read book Kobieta sztuka i kolonizacja Wizerunki kobiet w strefie kontaktu indyjsko brytyjskiego written by DOROTA KAMIŃSKA-JONES and published by Wydawnictwo Naukowe Uniwersytetu Mikołaja Kopernika. This book was released on 2017 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Prezentowane analizy zostały starannie osadzone we właściwym im kontekście historycznym i społeczno-kulturowym, dając wyraz pogłębionemu rozumieniu analizowanych przedstawień. […] Z recenzji prof. dr hab. Danuty Stasik
