Book From HydroCarbon to Hightech

Download or read book From HydroCarbon to Hightech written by Chandana Kularatne and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2024-02-21 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Qatar’s state-led, hydrocarbon intensive growth model has delivered rapid growth and substantial improvements in living standards over the past several decades. Guided by the National Vision 2030, an economic transformation is underway toward a more dynamic, diversified, knowledge-based, sustainable, and private sector-led growth model. As Qatar is finalizing its Third National Development Strategy to make the final leap toward Vision 2030, this paper aims to identify key structural reforms needed, quantify their potential impact on the economy, and shed light on the design of a comprehensive reform agenda ahead. The paper finds that labor market reforms could bring substantial benefits, particularly reforms related to increasing the share of skilled foreign workers. Certain reforms to further improve the business environment, such as improving access to finance, could also have large growth impact. A comprehensive, well-integrated, and properly sequenced reform package to exploit complementarities across reforms could boost Qatar’s potential growth significantly.

Book A High Tech Business Venture Start Up Growth and Closure

Download or read book A High Tech Business Venture Start Up Growth and Closure written by Haripada Dhar and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2018-04-06 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From conception of a novel idea to the production and marketing of kilowatt-range fuel cells (PEM or proton exchange membrane) and related products achieved in the business venture is what this book is about. The urge to start a business came from the momentum generated through suffering of being laid off from a job and going through the changes from job to job for a few years. Finding an innovative idea for the business, establishing the business, getting funding for the development of the business, making and selling products—these are all steps of entrepreneurship. Some people may be a natural entrepreneur, others may learn from the family tradition, and still others may get it from the inner urgings. Establishing a business in the high-technology area, in particular, starting it from scratch requires proper education, training, strong motivation, and personal drive. It requires a tremendous push from various sources to start a business. Another important motivation for having my own business was to give my family a stable environment for living. I suffered a lot during the period I was looking for a job and was moving from one place to another. I moved from Toronto (Canada) to Texas (USA), Texas to Connecticut, and from there to Arizona, then to California, and back to Texas. Such moving around (and the instability it creates) is not favorable for the dependents and, in particular, to children in their formative ages. If they do not have to move, they would be more secure and stable. It took about fifteen years after my PhD education when I was able to start my own business. Coming from a third-world country was another disadvantage for me—for many things I did or could not do.

Book excerpt: There are fewer grounds today than in the past to deplore a North‑South divide in research and innovation. This is one of the key findings of the UNESCO Science Report: towards 2030. A large number of countries are now incorporating science, technology and innovation in their national development agenda, in order to make their economies less reliant on raw materials and more rooted in knowledge. Most research and development (R&D) is taking place in high-income countries, but innovation of some kind is now occurring across the full spectrum of income levels according to the first survey of manufacturing companies in 65 countries conducted by the UNESCO Institute for Statistics and summarized in this report. For many lower-income countries, sustainable development has become an integral part of their national development plans for the next 10–20 years. Among higher-income countries, a firm commitment to sustainable development is often coupled with the desire to maintain competitiveness in global markets that are increasingly leaning towards ‘green’ technologies. The quest for clean energy and greater energy efficiency now figures among the research priorities of numerous countries. Written by more than 50 experts who are each covering the country or region from which they hail, the UNESCO Science Report: towards 2030 provides more country-level information than ever before. The trends and developments in science, technology and innovation policy and governance between 2009 and mid-2015 described here provide essential baseline information on the concerns and priorities of countries that could orient the implementation and drive the assessment of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in the years to come.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Sovereign Wealth Funds

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Sovereign Wealth Funds written by Douglas J. Cumming and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 739 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sovereign Wealth Funds (SWFs) represent both an increasingly important - and potentially dominant - category of alternative investor, and a novel form for governments to project their interests both home and abroad. As such, they represent both economic actors and embody power vested in the financial and diplomatic resources they can leverage. Although at times they have acted in concert with other alternative investors, their intergenerational savings function should, in theory at least, promote more long-termist thinking. However, they may be impelled in towards greater short termism, in response to popular pressures, demands from predatory elites and/or unforeseen external shocks. Of all the categories of alternative investment, SWFs perhaps embody the most contradictory pressures, making for diverse and complex outcomes. The aim of this volume is to consolidate the present state of the art, and advance the field through new applied, conceptual and theoretical insights. The volume is ordered into chapters that explore thematic issues and country studies, incorporating novel insights in on the most recent developments in the SWF ecosystem. This handbook is organized into four sections and 23 chapters. The four sections are: Governance of SWFs, Political and Legal Aspects of SWFs, Investment Choices and Structures of SWFs, Country and Regional Analyses of SWFs.

Book excerpt: High-tech Architecture - Preserving the Heritage of Innovative Construction The high-tech architecture of the 1970s–1990s is typically characterized by the use and exhibition of advanced technologies. In terms of appearance, these buildings often have innovative façades, supporting structures accentuated in color, and expressively displayed technology systems. Unfortunately, however, the rapid obsolescence of technology has often led to the complete replacement of the very systems that defined the architectural form. In 2023, an international conference at ETH Zurich in collaboration with Bauhaus-Universität Weimar explored the question of how best to deal with the structural legacy of technologically innovative architecture. This book summarizes the results and provides an overview of the current state of research. Current state of research on high-tech architecture and its conservation Overview of the opportunities and challenges of high-tech buildings New findings on the topic of building within existing structures Also available as a set with the congress volume Denkmal Postmoderne 978-3-0356-2783-1
