Book excerpt: What does science teach us about mankind? People who do not believe that there is a Creator God would have us believe that the universe appeared by chance. If that were really true it would mean that we are nothing more than a bio-chemically determined accidental product of nature. We are living in an unguided universe that began from nothing and will end in nothing. It would mean that we have no free will. It would mean that all of our choices are just the product of chemicals reacting in our brains. In contrast to that hopeless philosophy, the Bible begins by assuring man that there is a God that stands outside of space and time; a God that is not part of nature but, in fact, created all of the worlds and all of the life that we see and experience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Misunderstandings about what it means for humans to be created in God's image have wreaked devastation throughout history -- for example, slavery in the U. S., genocide in Nazi Germany, and the demeaning of women everywhere. In Dignity and Destiny John Kilner explores what the Bible itself teaches about humanity being in God's image. He discusses in detail all of the biblical references to the image of God, interacts extensively with other work on the topic, and documents how misunderstandings of it have been so problematic. People made according to God's image, Kilner says, have a special connection with God and are intended to be a meaningful reflection of him. Because of sin, they don't actually reflect him very well, but Kilner shows why the popular idea that sin has damaged the image of God is mistaken. He also clarifies the biblical difference between being God's image (which Christ is) and being in God's image (which humans are). He explains how humanity's creation and renewal in God's image are central, respectively, to human dignity and destiny. Locating Christ at the center of what God's image means, Kilner charts a constructive way forward and reflects on the tremendously liberating impact that a sound understanding of the image of God can have in the world today.

Book Seeds of Destiny A Devotional Study of Genesis

Download or read book Seeds of Destiny A Devotional Study of Genesis written by Warren Henderson and published by . This book was released on 2019-06-16 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genesis, more than any other book of the Bible, provides an overview of God's immense purpose for humanity. This fountainhead of Holy Scripture stretches from the dawn of time, past the birth pangs of the world, the fall of man, and beyond to the restoration of mankind to God. God's plan of redemption is displayed through dazzling allegory in Genesis. The climax of Genesis is the exaltation of the Son of God, and redeemed souls receive eternal bliss and communion with Him. Although Genesis reveals much concerning human affairs, most of this information is in "seed form." The word "seed" is a key word in Genesis. It occurs fifty-six times - over twice as many references as any other book in the Bible. The main teachings of the Bible derive their heritage and features from Genesis seeds. Genesis is full of "initial seeds" which give evidence to realities not yet complete. As God is sovereign over creation there is nothing that can thwart His plans for mankind. Hence the seeds of Genesis are nothing less than "seeds of destiny." Genesis is a book of beginnings - the "seed plot of the Bible." -- Warren Henderson

Book The Land of Canaan and the Destiny of Israel

Download or read book The Land of Canaan and the Destiny of Israel written by David Frankel and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2011-06-23 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What part does the land of Canaan play in the biblical conception of “Israel”? To what extent does the religion promoted by the Hebrew Bible require that Israel live its communal life in the national homeland? And how does life in the land compare in importance with other elements presented as belonging to Israel’s ultimate destiny, such as, for example, adherence to the law? To what extent must the people of Israel take hold of and settle in the “entire land of Canaan” for them to fulfill their destiny? Might the land be shared with other peoples, or must non-Israelites be expelled and subjugated, or at least kept at a safe and isolated distance? Frankel asks these questions and others of the Hebrew Bible as a whole and of the biblical texts individually. He shows that all of these questions were addressed by various biblical authors and that diverse and even opposing answers were given to them. These issues are not completely new. Many of them have been addressed in recent times by various scholars and theologians who have taken a renewed interest in the “territorial dimension” of the Hebrew Bible. However, works of a predominantly theological or sociological orientation often suffer from a tendency to read the biblical texts holistically and to gloss over textual snags and inconsistencies. For Frankel, the snags and inconsistencies in the texts are of central importance. They allow him carefully to reconstruct the process of the growth of the texts in question and to reveal both their original forms and their final transformations at the hands of the editors. Frankel’s analysis shows that behind the present form of several biblical texts lie earlier versions that often displayed remarkably open and inclusive conceptions of the relationship between the people of Israel and the land of Canaan. Diachronic analysis of the biblical text is thus an essential component in this book’s attempt to retrieve something of the heated theological dynamic that animated the work of the authors and editors whose efforts were consummated in the formation of the Hebrew Bible. Frankel presents here many new and previously unrecognized biblical conceptions and traditions that have significant theological implications for the contemporary religious and political situation in the State of Israel. Once the biblical conceptions have been accurately identified, analyzed, and categorized, he opens a discussion of the possible relevance of these conceptions to the contemporary situation in which he lives.

Book excerpt: The question of destiny is surrounded by mystery. Are we alone? Are we left clueless about the most important issues of our life? Is there any way to find the answers to the four major questions we all have: Who am I? What is the purpose of my life? What am I doing here? Who is my Creator? Perhaps there is a plan for each of us, as hinted at in the Bible: Even the very hairs of your head are all numbered (Matt 10:30). If such a plan does exist, is it hidden from us or are we allowed to see whats in store for us? The Bible describes early in Genesis the Creators intent to leave lights in the sky for signs and for seasons (Gen 1;14). This book is an introduction to one of the oldest and most persistent methods used to understand and decipher the maps of our personal destiny.
