Book excerpt: New York Times best-selling author presents a radical alternative to psychotropic meds: discerning the meaning in your symptoms and your struggle as a way to reclaim your health and your self. For years, we've been telling ourselves that our difficult feelings-sadness, rage, shame, intensity, worry-are somehow "not okay." And, all too often, we've relied on the promise of pharmaceuticals to tamp them down. The fact is, though, that these feelings are a vital part of our experience. They are real. And those of us who feel them most strongly are the canaries in the coalmine-sensitive to things that are seriously wrong in the world today. In a book that's both provocative and promising, holistic psychiatrist Kelly Brogan, M.D., author of A Mind of Your Own, shows us that we don't have to medicate our mental, emotional, and physical pain away-that the best way out is through. She explodes the mistaken belief that our symptoms-from mood changes to irritability to fogginess and fatigue-are evidence that we are sick or broken. Then she charts a new path to get real, get well, and get free. The journey includes: • Coming to a new appreciation of the meaning behind symptoms, and whether you are a canary in the coal mine • Learning the 2 major risks of medication that most doctors are not trained to disclose • Exploring the 5 reversible physical drivers of so-called mental illness • Starting the process of radical physical healing with inclusive details of Dr. Brogan's history-making 30-day protocol • Taking an emotional inventory of energy drains and toxic relationships • Taking a deeper dive into the spiritual awakening and expansion that comes when you reclaim your real self from conventional medicine • Identifying the most likely places you have given your power away • Understanding what the science has to say about psychedelics as a tool for awakening • Navigating health challenges with curiosity and the proper tools • Guidance, support, and many Travel Tips shared from the trenches! Our experiences, Dr. Brogan argues, aren't problems or pathologies; they reflect what we need to accept, acknowledge, and transform in order to truly become who we are. Own Your Self is a journey of healing, and also something more: a journey of coming home to ourselves.

Book The Intelligent Body Reversing Chronic Fatigue and Pain From the Inside Out

Download or read book The Intelligent Body Reversing Chronic Fatigue and Pain From the Inside Out written by Kyle L. Davies and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2017-05-02 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exercises and strategies for long-term emotional well-being in the face of physical difficulties. Why are we seeing growing numbers of people suffering from debilitating chronic symptoms of pain, fatigue, inflammation and cognitive impairment that medicine is failing to resolve? A new paradigm is needed where we understand the mind and body as an interconnected flowing system. This paradigm embraces the self-healing, self-correcting, and self-creating natures of our connected mind-body system. Physical symptoms are simply a sign of disharmony and energetic imbalance, a “tap on the shoulder” from our intelligent body that is trying to get our attention. This “tap” on the shoulder can become debilitating symptoms over time. When we pay attention, and understand this communication, we can take the steps to facilitate our own self-healing. This book explains the origins of chronic symptoms and outlines the road to recovery. Readers are offered life-changing principles and practices to regain harmony in their lives and bodies, whether they suffer from chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, adrenal fatigue, trauma, depression, or anxiety. It explains how we can learn to heal ourselves from the inside out by reconceptualizing the relationships among our bodies, minds, and emotions, embracing the full importance of the mind-body connection, and tapping our natural restorative capacities. Here, readers will find ways to maximize the connections between optimum health, peace of mind, and fulfilling life experiences, all emerging when we are aligned with our “true self.”

Book The Joyful Freedom Approach to Cancer Related Fatigue

Download or read book The Joyful Freedom Approach to Cancer Related Fatigue written by Marilynne N. Kirshbaum and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-06-25 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book introduces The Joyful Freedom Approach, as a strategy for recovery from fatigue. It was initially developed through a series of research studies inspired initially by women who had breast cancer and were troubled by ongoing cancer-related fatigue. The integrated, holistic approach has scope for supporting individuals who have experienced energy depletion not just due to cancer and its treatments, but also in relation to other illnesses, conditions or distressing life events. The approach is aimed at helping people to discover what they can do to energise their lives following an event such as cancer that has left them lacking vitality, wellness or a sense of direction and clarity about how to live life fully. Research has culminated in identifying five attributes of energy restorative activities; these are represented by the Energy Restoration Framework. The attributes of Purposeful Expanding, Connecting/Belonging, Awe-inspiring and Nourishing act as headings for discussion, planning and integration into an individual’s recovery and beyond. The book is organised into three parts and subdivided into chapters. Part One contains the chapters of: The Inspiration, The Challenge and the Resolution. These first chapters offer the reader a gateway to the Joyful Freedom Approach starting with a narrative that starts from nursing practice and discovering energy-fields, through to the foundations and detail surrounding evidence-based research on cancer-related fatigue and possible interventions. Part Two consists of chapters that serve to place the energy-creating framework in context: Philosophy and Theory; Evidence for Change and Research in Practice. Here, the influential Attention Restorative Theory of Professor Stephen Kaplan, an environmental psychologist, is introduced. The discussion then progresses onto the adaptation of Kaplan’s theory to the cancer care and illness context. Part Three provides an overview and representation of The Energy Restoration Framework leading to the emergence of the Joyful Freedom Approach. The book concludes with a discussion of how theory and practice can be brought together and applied using The Joyful Freedom Approach. The book is aimed at health care practitioners who are engaged with counselling people through distressing life events. This would include nurses, medical doctors, social workers or occupational therapists who work with individuals who are recovering from illnesses or surgery, or mental health practitioners who help their clients to regain control and navigate through distressing life events. The book offers practitioners and therapists an evidenced-based template that is versatile and adaptable to meet the needs of a varied range of clients.
